Try downloading something. The games patched or otherwise are no longer hosted directly. Now you have to get the instructions from their transcord. you copy the cdr_ticket from each game page and paste it into the field in cdromance.org Pretty sure Spike got DMCA'd or otherwise threatened/actioned legally and even this will be temporary.

Nobody knows if it's Nintendo or not, but some entity was able to get the site reported to Google to get their ads removed. Yeah I know, nobody sees ads because they use adblock, but if your site gets ads pulled by Google then not only are you blacklisted from getting ads again, but it also heavily affects how search engines see your website and if it'll mark it as "safe" to browse.
The guy that owns the website is in lockdown mode while Google is doing a corporate-standardized website inspection of CDRomance, don't know how long that'll last but until then you can't access the DL links normally. In this case, the only thing Google cares about is whether or not CDRomance is hosting roms and letting people pirate them, no other content or coding matters to them, so once that's over it'll go back to business as usual.

          >there are legal precedents against archive.org
The library & ebook thing truly was a chronic mistake.
It was a novel (HAR HAR) idea, libraries closed due to 'rona so allow access to books, until they cut into popular works and were straight up sharing PDF rips of commercial books.
Like I get normalgays could only ever access something like zlib from a .com frontend or not request files through bots but I still don't know what Archive were thinking.

At the time I remember looking for a specific edition of a book so I could check the formatting & typeface for matching on an 8" reader and I had a decent amount of trouble finding it. Then archive did their silly library sharing, it got flooded and all of a sudden there were just pdf scans from the commercial book right there for me to look at and copy with no need to go tracking it down irl, but not just that specific edition, almost every reprint was there too including editions currently published.

All this and they do it at a time when normalgays weren't commuting so publishers were worrying about their physical book sales and trying to also get people bored at home into the idea of buying ebooks.
I still don't know what the frick they were thinking.

Developers and publishers do not give one single shit about old games, but book and manga publishers have only been becoming increasingly draconian in recent years. They missed out on a ton of sales due to allowing so many series to go out of print and refusing to release anything digitally, and are only now starting to realize their mistakes. Trying to read light novels online has been a real wake up call for just how bad things have gotten

archive has enough support and money to last a bit longer in court than a couple guys hosting a ROM site. archive is also user uploaded content, which is legally distinct (for now).

it's worse than that, sometimes translations need a very specific game dump that can be hard to find

try applying a patch to the PC-98 version of Yu-no, it's a bit of a nightmare finding the exact hard drive dump that was based on, and no searching for crc 2820FD3C does not help

Spike doesn't do PC-98 but would have been nice if he did, just having a pre-patched rom to download on a site that gets updated very quickly for new translations is very convenient and occasionally saves a lot of fuss

Pre-patched PC-98 Yu-No is on archive.org like pretty much every other non-windows translation.

there's a 1.04 patch so this isn't the latest but again if you actually try to find the original hdi it's annoying to nail down the right one, the point I was trying to make was that having pre-patched files is useful

for the record the only place I've found with this file is the torrent set on nyaa with title "PC-98 ROM Collection" and file "Kono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shoujo YU-NO (with Special Disk).hdi" which has crc 2820fd3c

nb: the fact that archive.org is increasingly treated as authoritative is making it a single point of failure -- when it inevitably gets what's coming to it I fully expect there to be no other way to find many items it is hosting that hopefully some data hoarder has kept on a NAS

Side note, anyone know if the psp or ps1 versions of Breath of Fire 3 and 4 are better?

Thankfully it's all still up for now, but it's a now or never situation for everyone that hasn't gotten to it.

It's because dumbasses post links to it all the time and goody two shoes Nintendo fanboys notify Nintendo about them and they send a C&D

If I remember correctly, Snoy and Nintendo actually teamed up to go after what they consider "piracy" so it's a concentrated effort by the worst of the worst to kill history so they have a better chance of making a buck off it. Gross stuff.

        Anonymous

        >so it's a concentrated
As much as I hate Sony fanboys, Sony really don't give a frick that people download PS2 games
        Nintendo actively do
Sony really only care about piracy on their current console

          Anonymous

I'd have to look it up (and I'm busy downloading like crazy at the moment), but I could have sworn I saw they were teaming up to take down emulation related sites, like I said.

But yeah, Nintendo is definitely the biggest dick about it for sure. These last couple of years they have been downright nasty about it considering their crapy switch emulator that they use as an incentive to pay for their overpriced access to the internet. Gross times we live in.

          (Just grabbed the ZoE games.)

        Anonymous

The thing that's annoying is that they really aren't making tons of money off this endeavor. Sony barely released any PS2 classics for PS4, and their PS2 emulator to this day is fricking busted on PS5. So many games have graphical issues and yet they still sell them, it's criminal. And even then it's more expensive to buy PS1 games for your PS4/5 than it is to buy them on your PS3, adding funds requires more of a workaround but its still possible.
As for Nintendo, it's sort of true in regards to BING BING WAHOO, but its not like they make constant collections or sell them on eShop, let alone honor Wii U/3DS era purchases. And even then they made their 3D All Stars collection a limited time deal, so they aren't even making money of of that either. They're just moronic to an aggravating degree.

          Anonymous

Yes that's the gayest part about it is it's just copyright trolling by corporations that have no intent on even making more than a tiny amount of these games available in playable form on current hardware and so aren't even making or potentially losing money here anyway.

          Anonymous

The worst part is they are willing to take down 90% of the obscure games just to procure a quick, nonsensical buck.

they are losing a ton of money by having consumers exit the market and get free content indefinitely. They want that unavailable and for you to be forced to pay again if you want any video games.

            Anonymous

Most people are too tech illiterate to even install the most basic emulator and where to find isos. I doubt this is anything more than a paranoid power play to exert control over a market that is by its very nature distributed instead of centralized. It's the same reason Nintendo actively gimped the N64 and Gamecube just to prevent piracy which was barely even occurring at the respective contemporary periods due to fundamental limitations of computers at the time. Plus, the market for the Switch is not a replacement to the piracy market. You can be a pirate and play Switch games legally.

And they are taken down when and if someone starts to care about them. They do comply to dmca and even post links to where you can buy the game if it's put up on sale. I'll be honest, I don't really go there often anymore. Reason being I have full romsets for all of my cartridge games, and for CD-based games I prefer CHD's as they save a ton of space, which CD Romance does not have. If I want the original file, I can easily uncompress them, checksums remain the same. So, what's wrong with them? If they find anything wrong with the site, it gets delisted from Google, which would mean no Ad site ever would work with him. Thus CDRomance wouldn't afford to be able to stay up. In the Saturn community we had a situation going on similar to this. Basically there was a group of people who would redistribute pre-patched games but also go as far as to sell them on repros and claim credit for doing the patch themselves or imply the people doing the patch were working under them. If anything went wrong with what they were doing they'd immediately deflect the blame back on the patch devs. So then devs would get complaints like "I paid $50 for a repro of this game and now it's crashing. I want my money back!".

So this created a pretty nasty situation. When devs asked these people to please give proper credit for the patches, and not sell repros with buggy work in progress patches burned to the discs, the people doubled down on the behavior. As a result a lot of devs started putting splash screens in their patches and disclaimers in their readmes to make it clear who made the patch.

That said, most of us in the Saturn scene never included Spike in those disclaimers because he actually was a respectful and decent human being. If an early beta patch was put up on CDRomance and the dev didn't really want it up on a place like that yet, all you had to do was ask Spike and he'd immediately take it down. He's in it for the overall community, not to stroke his ego.

I really hope this whole CDRomance situation didn't arise simply from this guy being a little b***h. If it is determined to be the case then I have zero sympathy for him if he faces prolonged doxxing/bullying/harassment and isn't able to produce another translation patch again.

How much space would you fellas recommend for gathering complete sets up to 6th gen? PS2 is easily going to be the heaviest storage-wise, followed by Xbox, but I think everything else should just be a few terabytes, right?

          Anonymous

Unless you're an archivist, you don't need complete sets. Theres' like 90% of PS2 games no one will ever play again because they're awful. Of the remaining 10%, only maybe like 2% are remotely good enough to play by the average person.

          Anonymous

iirc my mostly complete set of gen 1-5 is like 1 or 2tb and most of that is just ps1. I say mostly complete because I just opted out of getting the PAL versions of the disc based consoles. There's really not much of an excuse to just not get everything especially with how cheap external drives are these days. Getting games one by one from a romsite like this is moronic.

do you really need to store every shit game you won't have the time or will to play?

      Anonymous

It should be around 30TB, including all the shovelware and 60 versions of Mahjong on each console.
Double if you include multiple regional versions. Triple if you include prototypes, revisions, hacks, undubs etc.
You don't need that many games, 1 TB will be enough for a lifetime, especially if you play cartridge games.

A few months ago I went through my list of links, downloaded, added them to my spreadsheet, and copied games over to everdrives & etc. Just expected the site to get got one day or another.

I've been using it for pre-patched fan translations and especially PSP eboots, there's basically nothing else that does good quality eboot downloads. Plus recently he started uploading hard to find older english patched Windows games like Magna Carta. It's also got a nice interface for just filtering other roms, was a nice way to go through and see if there were any interesting RPGs I missed.

        Semi Official FAQ

THE STORY AS I KNOW IT:
To be more specific, the ESA filed a whole lotta claims against a whole lotta sites, which included CDRomance. Spike thus got his AdSense revoked and CDRomance is currently being inspected by Google. If they find anything wrong with the site, it gets delisted from Google, which would mean no Ad site ever would work with him. Thus CDRomance wouldn't afford to be able to stay up. This countermeasure is in place to show Google that this site is A-OK. If all goes well, nothing further will happen and Spike will find another Ad service to keep the site up.

        Some further notes:
Spike has said that this is probably gonna be how it works moving forward, as it's safer and he doesn't want a repeat of what happened with other sites. However he is willing to make changes to the current system after the fiasco ends in order to make it more clear.

If the site gives you a "Not Found" error, that is normal. The ticket IDs change consistently, so refresh the cdromance.com page and you should be good

Check the pin in general (how-to-download)

NEW: This specific channel is in slowdown mode, as Spike wants it to be kept semi-clear so he can see questions people have with the site without them being bogged down by everyone else asking something different.

If you see someone in here with a question you know the answer to, or would like more context about, start a thread around their message. This gets around the 10-minute restriction.

Yes, the BIOS files are still there, just use the Ticket at the top of the page.

They can already do that with a simple CRC match, thing is, cloud storage is personal too, you can have your own legit rips of games, music, and movies on there. Imagine if your harddrive deleted copy protected content from itself, that's what cloud drives that do that would essentially be doing. The issue is when you start publicly sharing that stuff.

This sucks to hear but I am actually pretty optimistic about this. These sites only get better over time. When it comes to internet-library-style access for ALL media, old and new--I don't know where the hammer will fall. But in terms of old games and fan translations--no chance that shit ever holds up should it go to court big time. I'd actually kinda love to see Archive finally go to court because I think they'd win.

If we're not talking about really specific shit like pre-patched romhacks, yes. Just learn how to patch roms, it's not hard. Myrient is probably the best romsite I've ever used: Every single official version of commercially released games, no useless web design and straight to the point

Shit, some emulators like RetroArch even do it for you on the fly these days. Don't even need to learn how to patch unless you want to apply multiple patches.

I would argue it's only going to get worse.

The web is has been swallowed up by giant companies and everything has to run through what they say to do.

The big tech companies are increasingly also big media companies as well as being largely under the control of US and EU authorities. Today that is leveraged mostly block two specific very illegal topics & content, but in 10 years time why not apply it to everything illegal? After all, piracy is illegal including piracy of 35 year old rom dumps.

The idea that it isn't Google and Microsoft's job to police the internet is increasingly seen as old fashioned. They regularly go after topics they just don't like for example with search results and "platform" availability to anything that disagrees with the LGTVHDR10+ community.

"Just build your own alt tech site" well look at KF.net for a trial of what they will do to anyone who doesn't toe the line -- it's still running, barely, but they are now fricking with bgp to block routing at internet backbones and that's where the sidewalk ends.

How long will it be before media companies and tech companies conspire to eliminate piracy from the internet? There's a lot they would be able to accomplish with existing tools but open collaboration to "stop online piracy" is very achievable.

If you don't already have a NAS full of everything you've ever cared about (mine's at 19tb / 28tb full) you should get on that sooner rather than later. It's going to get harder to get this stuff.

I don't write this to doompost but nobody is coming along to save the internet.

use romhacking.net's online patcher. it tells you if it's the right checksum etc.

        Anonymous

I did, and it tells me nothing that I already don't know. The patcher already tells me that the checksum is wrong, and I can already check the file hashes of the ROM I'm trying to patch, but what I don't know, is what version of Paper Mario is the correct one that I actually need, and it doesn't say anywhere on the site or in the readme, unless I'm missing something.

      Anonymous

The hack is looking for a Paper Mario ROM with a CRC32 hash of 54257164. I don't know where he got that file as that's not a verified ROM. Anyone that refuses to check the base ROM when you're making a patch for your stupid hack should be shot in the head. This isn't a CDRomance issue.

        Anonymous

How did you find out what CRC32 it was looking for?

It's not a CDR issue, but having prepatched roms does help prevent this issue.

UPS and BPS have the CRC32 in reverse order at the end of the file. Skip 8 bytes, reverse the next 4

While your PC is turned on, firmly touch its internals until you start to be electrocuted. Endure the pain and say out loud: "don't hurt me, big boy! I just want to understand you!" Show no fear, your computer will notice if you're afraid. If you're successful, your machine will be tamed and you'll know its binary secrets. This, I started backing up all of my roms, movies, books, music and even modern vidya that I really like after Emuparadise got shittershattered. Thank frick that the HDD price for GB per Dollar has sunk so much in the last 8 years, I've just started buying cheap(ish) and slow 5TB WD HDDs and are in the process of moving all of my backups from my older and smaller drives onto these and then keeping all of them safely in their own little plastic cases with labels on them in an airtight plastic container in my closet.

It was a pain in the ass at first but after I started using Excel to keep track of all my shit it got a lot easier since I can just save said spreadsheets on a tiny 16gb thumbdrive along with a backup of each specific spreadsheet and a copy of OpenOffice on each respective drive.

I'm interested too. I've read that while SDD are more resistant to physical shocks, it's worse for long-term data retention (though still not bad). If you take good care of it, then an HDD (the mechanical one) is one of the best options available to the average consumer. Surely there must be better and more complex solutions.

I just have an external SSD chamber, I buy a new SSD every 5 - 7 years and back it up to that.
I got a new 2TB SSD for $60 last year, so it really isn't that expensive considering you could easily spend that on one old game.
outside of that I just make sure I have at least two separate drives where something I like is saved.

                Can you explain?
I store full sets by system (which means nearly a folder of nearly 3TB for psx).

                >the larger a folder is, the more likely it is to corrupt sooner.
Is this true? I use Linux, so it's different from the usual Windows' NTFS. Never had this issue.

whilst i'm not super into it technically, i believe any drive that makes use of a FAT32 approach to data compartmentalising is vulnerable to it.
especially when copying and writing folders which is something you'll do a lot with external or secondary drives you use a lot.
not sure if linux uses fat32 since I remember having to re-format drives to make them linux usable but if it does than yeah I'd imagine the issue follows over onto there as well.

I thought the first poster in this chain was totally full of shit but now I'm way less sure, lol. We shouldn't be using FAT32 anymore anyway.

I'm not full of shit, copying and writing large folders (especially compressed ones) CAN do damage to your drive over time.
incremental yes, but it'll keep your drive in better health AND should it start to die in use (which it won't if you monitor it's health occasionally), you'll have a greater chance at recovering more files than losing it all.

obviously for industrial use you can ignore this rule but i try and keep all my folders from exceeding 200GB at least in current times.

              >a single folder containing 500GB+ of data is less stable than having a handful of folders with 50GB - 100GB data
              Can you explain?
I store full sets by system (which means nearly a folder of nearly 3TB for psx).

the larger a folder is, the more likely it is to corrupt sooner.
instead of having a single folder full of ROMs for a system, break it down into a couple, I list mine alphabetically and have 4/5 folders dependant on the system's library.
obviously for fourth gen and before this doesn't matter since entire ROM libraries are likely to take up so little anyway.
I might be a bit paranoid but it's always the system I've stuck to when cataloguing shit on a PC.

Linux uses ext4 instead of fat32.
(There are some people who choose other filesystems instead, but ext4 is most commonly used one for now.)

I don't think any mainstream OS uses FAT32 anymore. Even Windows defaults to NTFS for around 20 years now. Smaller-capacity flash drives do tend to use FAT32, but more for universal compatibility issues than anything else, since we have exFAT nowadays. Anyway, older filesystems without journaling (or alternative techniques) do have a higher corruption rate, but it's not something people with newer drives and systems should worry about, specially if they take good care of them.

Price is good, but I'm a third-worlder and things are rougher here. Even if you have the dough, getting a 2TB drive is annoying, because of availability issues. I have to make do with an 1TB and a 640GB HDDs.

Frick the companies that does this shit. The only reason why everyone does this shit in the first place is because it is the only way to play a lot of these old games and even when there are options they are worse 99.9% of the time.
I get why Black personendo and Snoy goes after sites that host current and even last gen games since they are still being sold by these companies but anything from the PS3 era and older should be available for FREE unless these same companies makes an actual effort with keeping these games alive and no, shitty ass remakes and fricking sub models are not a viable strategy for this as it provides a MUCH worse experience for consumers while increasing the cost of overheadthe bottomline for these companies.

The "free" model of current emulation is the best version for everyone involved since it removes the bottomline costs for companies so that they aren't legally obligated to keep this shit onlinesupported forever and it gives almost everyone equal access to (arguably) to old cultureart that has shaped our current societies.

Abandonware should be an actual legal concept that works just like how its meme version currently works ffs. Yes, I'm mad.

Ouch... I loved this website, I'm glad it still sort of works, but seeing it being targeted really sucks... which company motivated them to do this? Or is it something they did as a sort of precaution?

It's always a bit scary to see emulation being targeted, I get why executives and companies do it, especially due to online services and remakes, but most old video games are unavailable now.

You don't browse it, but it has the exact same layout as the Files section on the webpage. So if you only want one particular folder, add its link onto the end of the rsync link.
