Just watch a let's play, Xenogears has a good story and a great cast of characters but the gameplay is fricking miserable, it aged like milk and that's with it being clunky and slow even by PS1 standards, nobody without nostalgia for it can honestly stomach it.

It’s fine. If you played FF7, you should be able to stomach it. I think it aged better than FF7 as well.

The dialogue/translation is far better than FF7’s but I think I still prefer FF7’s gameplay. Plus FF7 is mostly a complete game

FF7 is a fine game, gameplay wise, not the most complex or challenging RPG in the world but still enjoyable.

I feel like I no-lifed 2 when it released and it still took me about 2 weeks just to finish the story.
I don't understand how can some of you finish these games in like 3 days.

      Anonymous

If you skip cutscenes, sidequests and know how to break the gameplay wide open, Xenoblade games don't take long to replay (except X because material grind is real for end-game gear and you actually have to go out there and explore if you want to progress the story). I sped through the entirety of XC2's NG+ in one weekend (even got every NG+ Blades and S-ranked their charts).

    Nope.
Was gonna replay 1 DE emulated, even had it all set up and saved after getting control of Shulk. 2 I planned on just reading a summary of, just didn't like 2 much. Instead I got the urge to play Rimworld again, lost frick knows how many hours and only stopped playing a few days ago.

Not really sure I'm gonna bother with 3 at release or not now, I have other games I want to play and honestly, I kinda wish 3 didn't have it's date pushed forward.

I have too many games I want to play to start 3 this year. Only one I'm playing on release is LiveALive. Gonna save 3 Hopes, Soul Hackers 2 and Xenoblade 3 for next year.

I finished XC1 finally after playing through it halfway years ago on the Wii U. Future Connected seems really boring as I don't care much of Melia's character so I skipped that for now.

I loaded my XC2 file from 3 years ago that was at Chapter 4, 35 hours in and have been enjoying continuing from there. I forgot how frustrating the Blade management system and all the fricking sub-menus are though. I'm really looking forward to finally playing Torna too.

In conclusion: I'm probably not going to be done before XC3 is out. Also X is still the best of the series.

people are such damn hypocrites. Repeated dialogue is charming and lovable, and always becomes a fondly used meme, except when it is Xenoblade or whatever is targeted for hatred, then it's magically a bad thing that deserves criticism.

Story wise, not at all, the games are very cohesive in terms of main plot between translations, its usually just names (a lot of which are way better like Amalthus' change), and in Xenoblade 2's case weird shit like "Amantatober" that makes no sense. 3 seems to be better in that regard.

Yes, he was, he simply was slightly more demonic-looking in his beta art than in the final design which is why I chose to show that, he still fulfills the exact same role Satan does in the gnostic doctrine, he's a being of light who guides humanity through random acts of enlightenment, he's essentially X's response to Alvis/Ontos, who represents the Father of the Holy Trinity.

Yes he does, but X is not a monadist game like the main series, it is gnostic, research the differences between the abrahamic Satan and the gnostic Satan.

I think x was originally going to have a very different setting but Nintendo meddled a bit I think with having a customizable avatar among other stuff. Mashiro is too Japanese and Nintendo wants to get as many people to buy the game as possible.

Persona is one of the few exceptions because its almost always set in a high school and Japanese terminology is more authentic to the setting and people go in with that understanding.

Yeah and xeno 2 is a shining example of perfect localization so let's keep following it. And if anyone criticizes it let's just say "well but it was this way in 2" as an argument. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah you should keep it consistent with the naming scheme of your previous localization for the game related to the new aspect you are localizing.

Sounds like you have a problem with the voice direction rather than the localization. Also the jap dub is available day 1 without dlc, so why complain? You can have the true Xenoblade 3 experience and feel superior.

                voice direction is localization, moron
                >"dude stop complaining about the dub you have another option :^)"
not the fricking point of the discussion. You wanted some genuine criticism of the localization and you got them.

Yeah, Boss Rex or just plain “Boss” would be much better.

To some extent that's true, but localization more so refers to changes in the script. You could argue that getting different accents for each region is localization in that sense. (Personally I don't think its related to voice direction though considering that voice direction is more related to the context of scenes or areas rather than preserving a game while also managing the cultural gap)

Lipsynching and shitty performances aren't related to the script or content itself, but poor voice direction.

Kingdom Hearts is the only jrpg that comes to mind where they actually bothered to fix the lip synching for the english dub for the cutscenes where the higher quality faces were used.

                I think FF7R did so.

Xenoblade 3 is also doing so to some extent, mainly for the stiff cutscenes where they are using some AI or other tech to move the mouths to the lines.

The lip sync and and voice direction are obviously bad, but I don't think the actual localization of the script (as in, changes to names and the translation choices made concerning the dialogue) is bad in the slightest.

                Anonymous

The only actual localization thing you mentioned was Rex-Rex instead of calling him big bro. This is explained by the fact that Nopon often use the first 3 letters twice as a sign of respect, i.e. DunDun for Dunban.

Morag is a little more problematic, but it is incredibly difficult finding a voice actress that can suitably do a deep male voice in the UK.

The rest of them are voice direction problems which have been tackled in this game.

The voice direction problems got tackle since Torna. Which also has the same voice director for the base game who also did FC and now is doing XC3 as well with XC1 voice director and some other voice director.

                >replacing Tora calling Rex "Aniki" for a generic Rex-Rex
Aniki is even more generic and it never translates well into english. Everytime I hear a character call another "Big bro!" I cringe. Rex-Rex works far better considering how Riki called Dunban Dundun already.
Localization isn't directly translating every single thing or it sounds like shit, Nipponese is a very different language. Case in point, every time 仕方ない gets translated to 'it can't be helped' sucks dick.
Also all your other points are voice direction related, not localization. I will say most of the name changes were superfluous and unnecessary.

If you ever learned anything about the language you'd realize directly translating it into cutscenes results in stilted ass dialogue when it needs to be spoken and not subbed. YWNBJ

                >I'd rather have dialog that means something completely different than directly translate it
Well, yes. If it's dubbed, there have to be changes in order for it to be taken seriously. If characters speak English, it makes sense that their vocabulary and dialogue reflects how Anglophones would phrase things. Secondly, some things have very direct or specific connotations in English that they either lack in Japanese or are exotic concepts to the Nipponese, but not to westerners. A grail is a cup; the Holy See is Roman Catholic, etc. Lastly, names in Japanese often have connotations that would be lost in translation, so giving characters a new name easier to decipher (or pronounce) and/or give a more familiar feel to the setting, or even the opposite, can be done without sacrificing the original intent. It's also great for recognizability. Try googling Gura, Invidia, Ira versus Gormott, Uraya and Torna. Or Homura versus Pyra. Some changes might be questionable, but I don't think the end product is bad in the slightest.

They really did a lot right given the time frame. In the sub, the blades all have Japanese names while drivers and normal people have English ones. This is localized over by giving the blades their American accents and normal people European ones.
I do kinda wish they kept the blades' JP names though, as it reflects how the Monado had kanji indicating it was from a past time. If even just Malos and Pyra were still Metsu and Homura it would've been neat. Absolutely a nitpick though, the original vision is kept perfectly.

to ne fair “aniki” here is more of banchou-styled “big bro”, deep reverence like how Tora rationalized it in en dub “twice the Rex”. Its kind of a shame theres no real better way to convey it beside going full mafia lingo in equivalent (unsuitable), with how the nopons in 2 are huge weeb/mechgays

Morag's voice is a complete non issue, and awesome has more uses than your 3rd grade education leads you to believe. Tota thing has already been addressed.
A lot of the issues behind Xenoblade 2's localization wasn't because of any issue with the localization team or the VAs used but rather because the whole localization had to be done within the span of 4 months or so due to the insane dev cycle of the game.
Xenoblade 3 doesn't have this issue because they had twice as much time to work on the game and didn't have to rush a localization near the end of development either, hell all the voice work has been finished since last year which is why the were able to do English lip syncing as well.

Very high, according to the people who have played the review copies the tone matches 1, and going by the Direct it is clear they are implementing several things from X like the more open-ended map design, the class system and the rectuitable team members.

The game deliberately tried to be a bit of a shonen anime with all the tropes that come with it since the team wanted to make something a little more light-hearted than their standard. Zeke gets introduced as a joke character, but he's pretty great and they ease off on the gas of comic relief once you start getting to Indol.

      Anonymous

Many of the English xenoblade 2 names are also mythological callbacks usually to similar myths in western cultures

      Anonymous

The worst thing with xenoblade 2 localisation is how all over the place the sources they use for the naming are (Greek, Zoroastrism, Gallish, Taoism).
While the japanese mostly referenced japanese myths (Benkei, Yoshitsune...), Taoist stuff (Byakko...).

        Anonymous

I actually think the variety fits with the world EN builds. Each country having their own mythos and people is conveyed. Dromarch is a gormotti blade and the name is from a welsh myth.
I still would've preferred it to be true to the original vision but it's still enjoyable to me, the different accents are very nice.

At least based on this, it wouldn't be much worse than XC2.
I heard nowadays Nintendo want to streamline the translation to fit the original narrative (hence why there was a rumour about they decided to restart BoTW's English localization last year).
But I think this is rather tricky because Xenoblade's localization already has their own "lore" by using a different accent for each background.

I really love Saitom’s sketchwork pieces. I think his style stands out a lot better when it isn’t as clean as the official renders. The XC2 art book is a pretty clear example of that

Ah, right a lot of time has passed so Rex would be dead. It'd be cool if he somehow gained immortality or was alive somehow. I wonder if we'll see flashbacks of Adult Rex with Pyra or Mythra, like maybe the old cast.

From the looks of it, some of the 1 & 2 cast will play a role in the DLC Story. My current guess is that the main couples of each games are gonna make your party of 6. So you’ll get Shulk, Fiora, Rex and Pyra and they’ll get their own respective Ouroboros forms. Then maybe some of the other legacy party members will get Hero roles.

She wasn't able to take the hint that the whole trip alone with him to a secluded far away place was a legit romantic move from him to woo and bed Melia specifically because he realized what an amazing woman she was and how much better she was compared to Fiora's demanding and hard-to-put-up-with demeanor. Any chance that Shulk had to capitalize upon the scenario was destroyed by their sudden dire situation with the Fog Beasts, the chaotic political climate with the survivors, and the fact that Riki's kids stowed away and served as permanent wiener blocks for the rest of the adventure.

Why are the Aegises called Holy Grails in Japanese kek. So out of place and dumb.

      Anonymous

Because originally the game had many Christian references but the localizers thought westerners would get offended by that so they changed those.

        Anonymous

Why are the Holy Grails called Aegises when that name has nothing to do with them

Even with the context of the Christian references, the Holy Grail has always been a divine object that grants wishes only due to the fact it housed the divine blood of Christ i.e it is man made object divine. The Aegis in contrast is a legendary weapon of divine construct that had taken many different forms according to its wielder which is very fitting since the Aegises were divine constructs to compile data on the emotions and tribulations of humankind and the wielders of the Aegis would resonate and change their forms.

I suppose it might make some sense if you view it from Klaus' point of view as he is their father (therefore his blood) to humanity (the disciples of which now worship him). A stretch to be sure but makes some sense. Not a very multilayered symbolism but symbolism nonetheless

I'm literally Catholic, we have communions that have us pretend we are drinking out of the holy grail which housed the blood of Christ to symbolise his forgiveness of humanity.

Things don't have to have multilayered symbolism in order to be cool. They just have to sound cool. Like having the holy grail alone is meant to grant you immortality and power much like how Rex and Amalthus becomes the Master Driver.
Though I get you, Aegises do sound far better

I'm just saying, I find it much cooler that the Aegis of greek mythology works and are treated the same as in XC2.

              Anonymous

I wouldn't read too much into it. Japanese routinely reference religious works all the time, and sometimes incorrectly. End of the day, it's just pop culture to write a story based off Biblical texts and, if it's Japanese media, some way subversing it and making religion and god the enemy or thing to kill.

Which oddly made X2 a little interesting since it made "God" the other half of X1's final boss, but instead of being evil, he was just tired and weary and thought the people of Alrest were okay with wanting their extinction instead of salvation.

First of all, it wasn't Klaus who named them Holy Grail, to him they're just processors, Malos named himself (and by extension the other processors) that because of his ego, it has nothing to do with what it does.
Second, they're not meant to be weapons in the first place so calling them the Aegis wouldn't make sense, even more so because the actual Holy Grail that Malos destroyed wasn't a weapon at all but in the localization it was called the Aegis for consintency's sake.

            Anonymous

The Aegis and its various forms aren't weapons per se. Sure they could be used as weapons as Zeus did when he once wielded it, I just didn't have the right word for it which just translated into me using the word weapon. The most accurate would just be objects since the shape of the thing would mould into whatever the user sees at the best tool for them and for the Greeks, that took to the form of a shield, for Perseus, it was a mirror, for and for Zeus when he battled with Chronos with his brothers it was a disc made of pure lightning.

    >Noah, you have it all wrong. You need to launch the enemy so that they’re stuck in the air and we can hit their weak points easily.
    >That seems rather counterintuitive…
    >Not until we smash the enemy back into the ground! We use the force of gravity to deal major damage!
    >We do something similar when the enemy is dazed. By inflicting a large amount of force we cause a burst which forces the enemy back on their feet, dealing a lot of damage.
    >Huh, it sounds kind of the same, but a little different.

You could always sell your copy if you got it physical. It never got a reprint, and Aegis joining Smash on top of 3 being announced only made people more feral for the handful of physical copies floating around. You'll easily get your $60 back with interest.

Finished DE last year, about to finish my annual XB2 playthrough
My hope is I can fit in a quick Xenogears playthrough to refresh on the broader plot points
Very excited for XB3. Hero System being a refinement on Blades combined with FFV's job system. The return of NPC Affinity Charts and Collectapedia. Return of Torna Camps and Camp Conversations. Combat being juiced up on all fronts, from Chain Attacks being combined with Blade Specials, Fusion Arts, Talent arts returning and Ouroboros topping it all off.

Yes,I've finished every Xenoblades years ago and replayed X and 2 5+ times each, can't wait to play 3 and I hope it's as replayable as X and 2 (don't care much about replaying 1)

I have ADHD and I got filtered by overwhelming game mechanics and tutorial popups in XC2 and I never play on easy mode I rather drop the game completely than switch to easy mode so I waste too much time reading wiki, guides, watching youtube instead of playing the game. I doubt I will finish XC2 before July 29.
Are there any DLC items which increase affinity, should I use them in early game or wait?

      Anonymous

Yes, the DLC gives you 10 Love Sources, pouch items that give 3K trust to every Blade equipped to the pouch's Driver. I'd suggest waiting for Chapter 4 before using them since you'll be able to equip 3 Blades per Driver by then. The DLC also comes with a quest that unlocks in Chapter 7 and allows you to craft additional Love Sources, but you can only craft one at time, because the crafting recipe requires a special item in Tantal that only respawns if you don't have it in your inventory, and the crafting spot is in Argentum, so you have to do round trips between Argentum and Tantal to craft every additional Love Source.

XC1 is so damn slow, the battles take forever and I'm losing the will to continue. Do I really need to play it before XC3? I played and completed XC2, is that enough or do I need to play the DLC for that too?

      Anonymous

      Are you using Sharla?
She makes battles last significantly longer.

        Anonymous

Sharla is a healer type and not a bad character at all but her whole deal is counterintuitive to how to battle efficiently which is topple locking and killing them as quickly as possible. One can make sharla sorta viable in chain attacks but that requires having most of her arts being attacks which sort of defeats the purpose of having her in the party since there are much better damage dealers anyways.

      Anonymous

How did you finish 2, but find 1 too slow to stomach, I found the combat and plot way more tedious in 2, never even finished the DLC because it forces you to do sidequests

        Anonymous

That's because you're moronic and failed to understand the combat, it's significantly faster and more involved than 1's combat.

      Anonymous

You don't need a healer. And if you do, Riki is way better at it.

Shulk, Dunban, and Riki (with sometimes Seven instead of Riki) will be your main damage drainers. You can kill everything in the game with them in literal seconds.

      Anonymous

How can someone find 1 slow but 2 not? The whole thing with xenoblade 2 is combo chaining and smash/topple/launch/smash so the enemies have much more HP for just that purpose

I finished XC1 back in 2012 and finished XC2 not long after it was released. Didn't play the DLC for XC2 and haven't touched either game since finishing them.

Hopefully I don't need to remember any specifics to understand XC3. I have a feeling this game is going to look atrocious on my 4k tv. Haven't played a Switch game on it since I got it.

Yeah, XCDE basically looks like an upscaled PS3 game on my TV. Which isn't completely atrocious but it doesn't look all that nice.

      Anonymous

I don't think you'll need to remember anything crazy, though they may slide in a few nods playing both will make sense of.

You're missing nothing by not playing 2's DLC (though Torna is a very nice slice of a Xenoblade game, and has a better battle system) since it only serves to fill in some details on the story that were removed from the main game.

Future Connected may be a bigger deal, but no one really knows.

The only complain i have is with the new freestyle element combo the AI dont even bother to match your stuffs anymore, and half of the time i have to fire off a random one instead of the 16 true combos
also b***hy Mythra is fun to look at vs Addam, Lora + Haze a cute what a shame

If you take a look at the Torna combos you'll see that there aren't actually as many true blade combos as the base game. For example, 3 fire specials will end in Heat III, not Mega Explosion.

Here is the full intro monologue from the Spanish previewer.

    >Fighting in order to live, and living to fight.
    >That's the way of our world: Aionios.
    >It's ironic that its name means "Eternal."
    >Because, slowly but inexorably, this world is coming to an end.
    >It doesn't matter that we haven't figured it out yet.

    Alongside this line:
    >"If the world holds our lives back, I will end it!"

Ending the war means ending the war.

It's more so just hype speculation, but if you listen in on the Spanish preview you can hear those lines.

Given the info we have, its very likely the war is related to the state of Aionios somehow.

        >I'd rather have dialog that means something completely different than directly translate it because it makes me cringe

Except the meaning is still preserved. Localization isn't 1-1 translating the Japanese into English because they are two completely different languages.

The point of localization it to try to keep the intent of the author for a work while still making it sound good for a different audience who will most likely not understand the cultural differences.

Rex-Rex not only has precedent in Xenoblade, but it also keeps the idea that Tora deeply respects Rex.

Is there a way to fake a "currently playing" game on Switch? I have a friend who is currently playing it, and has put 25 hours into it.

Gameplay looks fine but I just can't get past how fricking boring the characters are and the story is not very interesting to me. The premise is fine but the villains are dumb as hell, BWAHAHAHAHA I WILL EAT ALL THE PEOPLE TO SUSTAIN MY CLOCK LOOK HOW EVIL I AM. The catgirl cries.

    Pretty meh.

anon they aren't going to show the true motives of the villains from the trailers
It's not like they showed complexity of Jin and Malos's motives from the trailers, and if you were to go by the first couple of hours of XC2, you'd think Torna was just generic bad guys that want to destroy the world or whatever

I think she gets better as the game goes on like Rex does. She really could have been more professional with the cringe stuff like blushy crushy though. She said in her stream of the game she hated it and it showed.

        >Americans
NoE is responsible for the localization and I think the Americans are asleep.

I sort of agree, especially now that in the Japanese XC3 one nation has charaters with western names and the other Japanese. But then again it was a bit strange how the blades had Japanese names in the first place when Morytha and the beanstalk housing Klaus seem to have been located in what used to be the USA. Does this make Klaus a bigger weeb in the Japanese version?

        >that a localization needs to be directly 1-1 with the original Japanese in order to be good.
It's a japanese game so I would hope so. What is there to gain out of stripping away part of a game's cultural identity in favor of passing it off as British?

I mean, you're already replacing the language, which is one of the most important cornerstones of a culture.

Because people have the misconception that a localization needs to be directly 1-1 with the original Japanese in order to be good.

And people can enjoy 2s dub. I certainly did. Did it have a lot of problems? Absolutely. But I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

2 is by far one of my favorite incredibly flawed games.

Because there are many elements that cannot be directly translated without sounding incredibly weird to Western audiences.

NoE's purpose in localization is to preserve the original intent of the author while also making it feel right for the audience its trying to present the game to.

In my honest opinion, the localization is fine. NoE did a pretty good job in preserving a lot of the ideas present in the original Japanese. The biggest loss in my opinion was the change from Judeo-Christian terminology to Greek terminology, but that also sort of makes sense as Christianity is heavily mystified over in Japan as Greek myth is here.

there are many elements that cannot be directly translated without sounding incredibly weird to Western audiences.
What sounds "weird" to a western audience depends on the player, even between a player who's familiar with JRPGs, and someone who isn't ,it isn't going to be the same. Hell, even to a fricking American and a brit it won't be the same.

            >Americans

            >I mean, you're already replacing the language, which is one of the most important cornerstones of a culture.
So that gives you free reign to change anything else and stop trying for accuracy to the source material?

Do you say Fiorung, Merefu, Neferu, Jiiku and Carna? If you can't see the gain from changing these moronic names then you're braindead.
They work in Nip but never will in English because they're different languages.

Japanese pronunciation aside, I see no difference in using Fiorung, Meleph, Sieg(fried), or Carna over what we got. Are you seriously trying to say that the average english speaker would have trouble understanding a persons name in today's multicultural society? As someone who live in north america, I see dozens of africans, middle easterners, and indians with harder to pronounce names on the daily in my work, it's literally a non-issue.

An American and a Brit would find pronouncing a Japanese name equally weird, as would the people voice acting those characters.

That's another reason why localizers often need to change names, because more likely than not they will butcher the pronunciation and the Japanese name itself is very different from what Western audiences are used to, which could lead to less sales.

And to give credit to 2, it is pretty accurate to the intent behind the source, and it even adds its own touches to give more worldbulding flair.

                >An American and a Brit would find pronouncing a Japanese name equally weird, as would the people voice acting those characters.
I find that incredibly hard to believe, for the reasons I said early. The average english speaker uses more difficult to pronounce names regularly, and then wouldn't have more trouble saying a japanese name than "Morag" or "Dromarch"

                Anonymous

It's not a matter of saying it, its more so that its a name that these people are simply not used to.

Its always the safer option to make names that will be more comfortable to these audiences while still trying to keep the original meaning of said name.

Nobody is used to Morag, Mythra, or Pyrrha. The average person is more accustomed to hearing japanese names from technology than anything Welsh, or even Greek.
