Vastly superior, cloud storage works, installing my games works, fixing my games works

Everytime I reformat my computer, it just installs my games without any issue, installing my games from my Steam Deck just works, a game that bugs out gets fixed in minutes

I had an issue with Epic store getting my card info, I had issues installing free games (still have issues, but haven't tried this year)

Maybe companies should actually pay people to operate a functional system

cloud saves and the controller drivers are a fricking godsend. steam was shitty when it first launched in the 2000s, but it's legitimately extremely useful nowadays. the idea that people would completely abandon steam if you forced them to download a different client for a few exclusives is moronic, only stores like gog are an actual competitor because they're just a store instead of forcing you to download bloatware that has less features than steam.

        Anonymous

People take things for granted when it's given for free and done automatically

It's why steam is as popular as it is, I can't imagine going back to 2008 having to install new drivers for each controller or worry about key bindings or cd keys or reinstallations etc.

          Anonymous

I think that's a big part of it. Much as people complain about Steam, they got in early and have put in a lot of low level work into making things that used to take effort effortless. It's painfully simple to add non-steam games, you can manage your library very easily and add your own categories and manage it, controller bindings are dead simple, and it even plays nice with other APIs. I can launch games straight from my Quest 2 with AirLink or a cable on SteamVR, and it just boots it right up. PC gaming used to be a pretty fiddly thing, but it's now so easy to do that anyone can do it without any real work. For better or worse, they've effectively delivered a console grade UX on PC.

Name one other online store that has the features that Steam has? I think the ONLY true competitor is GOG, and that's because unlike Steam they steal mods off the internet to make old games work out of the box. Steam just takes shit off the store if it doesn't work.

        Anonymous

GOG literally only exists because Steam doesn't care about old shit. If they started working with devs on re-releasing 1990s-2000s PC games fixed, with fixed MP (no gamespy bullshit), achievements and trading cards GOG would be a fricking ghosttown tomorrow.

It's two different systems. Steam was originally just Valve's means of distributing Half Life, and it slowly grew into a digital store as various publishers signed on. GOG was originally Ukrainians selling bootlegs online, and this morphed into becoming a legitimate business by tweaking old games (always a favorite of slav bootleggers) to run on newer machines. The state they are in now is convergent evolution, but ultimately their focuses have always been different.

Like for example Steam's copy of World in Conflict fails to run, but GOG's copy does run.

GOG also offers DRM-free games, Valve doesn't. It's not a huge selling point but it is for some people.

Given the choice of buying a game at GOG vs Steam at the same price, I would love to buy from GOG because it is DRM-free. However, GOG will not be in business in the next 5 or so years. That is why I have no choice but to buy from Steam.

Not even defending EGS but this is a bold faced lie. They take it off if it's causing a significant amount of backlash due to refunds. There are a lot if broken games you can buy on Steam right now. inb4 werks on my machine

Steam has more features and inertia is a big part of it. A lot of the things Epic did favor the publishers and doesn't do much good. Why should I care if publishers get a better deal while the game prices are the same to me and there isn't any mod support or other things steam already has? I'll claim every free game off epic that they offer but if I have a choice of where to buy a game I'll go with steam.

If you played on pc with games for windows live you would know. Seriously the fat frick would have to frick it up really hard for me to decide to move to another launcher.

Plus I dont like to have a trillion launchers. And steam came first with a working product. Thats really it. I dont have spotify but imagine if half of the music you listen was in spotify, the other half in youtube music. It would be a mess. I mean, you can already see it happening with video streaming. A lot of people went back to piracy.

Paid exclusivities on a singular platform is shit for the consumer. Now I dont care if there are competing stores with the same games, but epic is always scummy with it. They pay for exclusivities, the games die on their store, and there is a cynic approach to its marketing. They always say how they take a smaller cut than steam, but games on epic cost the same as game on steam. Whats the benefit for me? Plus they already said the smaller cut wasnt sustainable on the long run, so whats really the complain against steam?

Sell me a BETTER store and I might move. If you ransom the games, I will just pirate and be bitter about it.

Were not. Its just the clear best and a rich frick handing rich fricks tons of money for exclusivity rights even though there storefront is years behind to force us to use it annoys me.

        Cause they have no competition.
It wasn't until AMD release Ryzen did Intel stop sitting on its ass doing shit all.
Now just look at the CPU market now. It has never been a better time to buy a CPU. It is super cheap with excellent performance.

A monopoly is only bad when they actually take advantage of being a monopoly.

I'm sure you'll be right EVENTUALLY. Like when gabe dies and his son takes over or something. But it's important to remember that nothing lasts forever, everything in this world is ephemeral. So we should celebrate anything that looks remotely stable for as long as we can.

on the contrary, I wish there was more legitimate competition to Steam. Epic ain't it, by any stretch. GOG is good because they're DRM-free, that's as close as any other store has gotten, and their selection is pretty limited.

Because steam is the most robust store/library enviroment by a mile and a half and it is completely free, stuff like family sharing was unheard of and it still is in most stores, multiplayer game-streaming was shoddy paid service that wanted you to pay 5.99 a month before valve made its own version completely free same case with phone streaming also native support for every controller you can think of, workshop support, actual reviews, etc.

just look at discord and how it paywall more than half of its features and compare it to steam

It took a few for Steam to add one. It started in 2003(?) and I started using it in 2007. It didn't have a cart then. You had to buy games individually through the same dialog box you install them via. If you bought too many games in a short period of time, they'd start denying your card and you'd have to deal with support to get it unlocked.

Websites had shopping carts long before Steam did, so there's really no excuse. Amazon launched in 1994. They were also embedding web browsers (specifically IE) in apps back then. They both were moronic at first. That's not to say Epic isn't shit. Try moving a game to another drive (or getting a new OS install to pick up your previously installed games).

I never saw the dilemma, here. They're...just apps. You don't leave one to go to another. You buy something off one storefront, or you buy it off another. You may even run them both at the same time. It isn't like the storefronts themselves cost anything. You'd think PC would be free of consolewarz but here you have people who manage to make it a thing with desktop icons.
