>muh nostalgia
If it was just nostalgia then the list would simply be in release order, it just so happens that people who are old enough to have played the original games on release are aware that the series used to be better, which is why the top half of his list is mostly comprised of games released before 2012.
Less handholding and more player agency. Older games were more like traditional JRPGs where the player was rewarded for exploring the overworld and talking to optional NPCs. Newer games are more like a guided tour between boss battles and as a result have little to no replayablity from a single player standpoint.
This has all been discussed a thousand times before and anybody over the age of 28 who has been playing since the series began knows it. If you're under the age of say, 27, then your opinion of the series is automatically defunct. Sorry zoomers.
this, if it were a gen 1 or 2 screenshot it'd make more sense
>Less handholding and more player agency.
so the thing SV does better than every other game and BW is poor at?
>the player was rewarded for exploring the overworld and talking to optional NPCs
so the thing the games still do and BW is poor at?
>This has all been discussed a thousand times before
Repeatedly saying "it's like an RPG" isn't an actual argument, morono.
It's funny, I didn't mean to use a Gen V screenshot to suggest that they were part of the older 'good' games, but now I'm glad I did because everybody scrambling to point out they weren't is simply proving my point
No, that's probably XY or maybe SS depending on how you treat the Wild Area. BW has an unusually large amount of optional side content during the main story. I'm talking Gen 1 levels but actual reasonable quality instead of tons of trainers with the same fricking Pokemon over and over again and like two actually solid dungeons. Hell, I'd argue the cutscene fest that is SM has more optional content during the main story, even if it's pretty much exclusively on the first and third islands, with some extremely minor and bad stuff on the second one. What does XY have, Lost Hotel? I mean, I really like Lost Hotel, but constantly getting wienerblocked during the rest of the game doesn't make up for it. And does SS even have anything aside from the main story path and the Wild Area without shelling out 30 more bucks for the DLC? Like, if you really wanted to say BW was bad at taking away player agency, at least you could just play B2W2 instead.

There's also nothing to achieve when exploring these areas considering their almost all entirely straight lines that lead to a Sage you can't find because they're gated until you defeat Ghetsis
Entrance caved in because Red canonically caught/defeated Mewtwo in RBY. While being able to capture the Legendary Birds and Mewtwo in HGSS was good from a content standpoint, it made little sense from a lore one.
>johto games and b2w2 above xy
Even if BW and XY should be swapped, this is far better than what "influencers" like Pokemon Challenges and Joe Merrick want you to think.
Any list that has the Johto games at the top is automatically correct. B2W2 is rated way too high though, and he doesn't appear to like Sinnoh very much, even though Platinum is just about on par with the Johto games.
Completely removing starter choice in favour of a shitty Pikachu who can’t evolve massively hurts the pacing and replayability of the game. The new front sprites, while looking nice, clash hard with the art style of the rest of the game (including backsprites which are still horrific)
>Emerald's placing.
This kinda suprises me: Werster usually praises Emerald "If I've got a long flight, you better believe I'm packing emerald" and this is 1 of the guys to discover pomeg glitch. I dunno, Hoenn has become synonymous with Werster for me.
You know, move all the Sinnoh games further down and this list would be pretty based ngl.

Holy fricking based. No wonder /vp/ hates this list, it's almost entirely fact
>no random extreme hatred for gen 6 but acknowledging it's a mid tier game
Jesus Christ. The K*loschizo really has gaslit this board into thinking XY were anything but bottom-tier garbage.
Don't care. Gen 5 still started everything I hate about nu-Pokémon and I won't give it a pass just because muh animated spwites muh pwt etc. The series peaked with HGSS, with BW being a sharp drop-off, and everything before building up to the glory that was HGSS.
Some days I prefer Crystal, some days I prefer HGSS, however, one thing is for sure: HGSS is objectively the best Pokémon game ever made, and that is non-debatable. Not by Unovasperms, not by GS nostalgiagays, not by nu-Genners, not by no-one.
>HGSS is objectively the best Pokémon game ever made

Pic related is you. You caused this. All because you couldn't use CHARIZARD and Pikachu until the post-game. You ruined this series. You're responsible for Gen 6, and the exessive amounts of KANTOOOOO pandering each gen. FRICK YOU.
I equally hate everything past HGSS. That includes Gen 5, and Gen 6, and everything up to Gen 9. I don't care if my hatred of Gen 5 caused Gen 6 to turn out the way it did, that's your problem, because that's when I stopped caring about the franchise.
most normies just realized it was a stagnated boring as shit game and then gen 6 brought back people's attention with the 3D overhaul and classic pokemon getting attention again
Given the specification on casual, that's largely correct. Like, I think BW is better than XY, but XY has a lot of things casuals would prefer on top of arguably having a better cutscene/gameplay ratio. That's probably why Gen 7 is so fricking low too. Like, I like USUM, but even I think it's way too fricking cutscene heavy, and most of them are meant to prop up SM's plot which simply doesn't happen and is replaced with a better one.
>BW has an unusually large amount of optional side content during the main story
does not contradict >the second most handhold-y and restrictive main series game in the franchise
.
Okay, elaborate what you mean then. Do you mean Pokemon pools? BW isn't the most restrictive there, but as a 150-ish level Pokedex it's not going to beat something like XY yeah. Do you mean giving the player better tools to make the game easier? I mean, I think EXP All as an option from the start is easier than Lucky Egg as an option like halfway through the game, and this isn't even getting into more dynamic stuff like catching EXP or EXP scaling.
>No, that's probably XY
So based on that, Legends is the most restrictive and handholdy, which seems fricking baffling considering the rest of the game. Probably not a great metric.
>No, that's probably XY or
I like how you didn't include any other cutscene on that Kalos route, the fricking Daycare one is incredibly unnecessary in particular. On top of that, the whole Bianca thing is an important part of her character development, I think wasting so much time on it is completely reasonable if not the most efficient. It's not like the Pokestar Studios tutorial which is completely unnecessary even if it technically has a core combat encounter in the middle of it.
>No, that's probably XY or maybe SS
Not BW, not relevant to the discussion. Tutorials are only a part of what makes a game handholdy and restrictive, the game design can do a lot of it too. There's a reason people fricking hate most of FF13.
>BW has an unusually large amount of optional side content during the main story.
There's also nothing to achieve when exploring these areas considering their almost all entirely straight lines that lead to a Sage you can't find because they're gated until you defeat Ghetsis
Not really? I mean, there's one map that's kinda pointless unless you have an event Pokemon, but the Moor of Icirrus is a perfectly reasonable area even without the event Pokemon it is tied to. This isn't getting into the two areas with legendary Pokemon, the one cave that's technically mandatory but gates itself based on HMs you can use, and two water routes with a potentially good Pokemon reward at the end of them. If you want to talk wienerblocking until postgame, XY is the king of that. TWO optional areas are best explored postgame, and only one of them is worthwhile to explore before.
>Okay, elaborate what you mean then. Do you mean Pokemon pools? BW isn't the most restrictive there, but as a 150-ish level Pokedex it's not going to beat something like XY yeah. THE MAP. THE MAP Black person. MY FRICKING GOD HOW FRICKING moronic ARE YOU? FRICK OFF YOU UNDERAGE homosexual.
Oh, we're talking about map design. I've actually noted something very interesting about BW maps, a lot of them have 3 major entrances (mostly the numbered routes). In fact, I'll list every single main story route that only has two entrances.
Route 2: This map is kind of lame after the really solid Route 1
Route 5: all the Routes before bridges are designed in a way that makes sense in universe, but this is the clear loser among all of them since it doesn't even have a spot to use an HM
Route 10: I think it's suitably climactic, but could have easily had an extra little cave there, it wouldn't hurt
If you're talking just main story progression, I've found that's more of a negative in JRPGs. When you make content both optional and technically mandatory, you have level issues. I personally always go back to Gen 1's dreadful post-Pokeflute routes and Silph Co. being the same Pokemon at the same level over and over again if you do choose to engage with the optional stuff. There's similar complaints with Gen 2's technical options that have a negative knock-on effect in their majority mandatory Rocket scenario being boring and low-level. And Gen 3's borderline experiemental water route design is something people have argued about for years. I'm not surprised Platinum decided to go more linear with the main story compared to DP. It works for the early Final Fantasy games (about 3 to 7 or 9, give or take), and Game Freak aren't competent enough to design a good Dragon Quest game (they're on the level of 2, frankly). If you want, I can link some articles about actually well designed JRPGs, if you want to read them.
Actually, I've found a very good way to make Gen 2 feel better to play while only mildly inconveniencing the player AND having it make sense in universe.
You create a roadblock between Route 24 and Mahogany, have the RAGECANDYBAR guy complain about how his shipment hasn't come in from Olivine yet. This gives the player access to Mt. Mortar as an optional area fairly early, gives them direction to Olivine and implies the lighthouse situation and the consequences of it in universe, and makes it so Pryce and everything afterwards can be leveled up since it can assume you cleared Olivine and presumably Cianwood. It's great, it's a shame they didn't think of that because they were too busy finishing the game at the last possible moment. Oh well, GS is still great, HGSS is still great, doesn't really matter.

That was Platinum, if you're just talking making every gym forced in a certain order and taking a specific direction through the map.
Werster is partly right, but only about a specific subset of Pokemon nerds, this doesn't really describe the wider reaction to how BW was received.
