What was the point of releasing the final book, a movie and a game all in the same year? Was it some kind of attempt to make it a mega hit multimedia franchise by trying to break into as many mediums as possible at the same time? Out of all the properties to do that with why an indie graphic novel by an unknown author with a finite shelf life?

It didn't fail per se, it was able to pierce through the mainstream bubble and solidified an enormous cult following (it was a major inspiration for my sister her to make a band here in leafland). That's a win in any author's book. I was always kind of jealous of BLO's success being a digital artist myself at the time.

The movie was followed up by an anime series with the same voice actor.
It might not have achieved mainstream success but it was definitely a cult hit with a big following even now.

It was a way to retcon the original story by basically turning Old Scott into a socially inappropriate outcast. Basically so the newer generation doesn't get offended by the old book.
Sorry I'm kind of fricked up right now. Forgot to mention how they made the new Scott not go down the shitty path by the whole time travel thing and keeping him away for a while while the rest of the story develops differently due to that. Thus causing to retcon the old book and turned into a parody in the new show.
Edgar Wright had been wanting to make the movie for a good while and for some reason he settled to make it before the final book was even finished. Odd shit.
Western graphic novels outside of Marvel/DC comics don't have as much huge cross media events as japanese manga, where anime adaptations, movies, and etc of super popular series are almost a given
It was IMO, an attempt by an indie publisher who had an award winning series to get money and see if that kind of cross media adaptation would be successful, and would probably have lead to further graphic novel adaptations had the movie succeeded and not become a cult hit at best.

I thought the art style was spectacular, but everything else was a letdown. I wouldn't have minded them doing something new with the story if it weren't such a bore. Even most of the actors sounded like they were completely phoning it in. Almost killed the whole experience for me.
