It's a shell of a story that reeks of dishonesty and lazy writing. Nobody cares if the story in souls games or DMC isnt that good, but for a Final Fantasy game to lean so hard on the HBO/Netflix westernslop is atrocious.
From what I've gathered from reviews:
-Very bad performance. It drops below 30 FPS and/or 720p at times.
-It's a movie game, you put the controller down and watch long cutscenes a lot. But I guess that's expected from Final Fantasy.
-The story is great at the start, it goes to shit halfway through. Someone even said the demo is the best part of the game.
-Zero RPG elements, it's an action game through and through.
-Zero exploration, it's completely linear.
-Sidequests are shit, "collect 10 bear asses" MMO garbage.
-The combat itself is great, but the game is so easy you can beat every encounter by spamming random buttons. In order to unlock hard difficulty, you need to beat the game once.
-Eikon fights are boring.
That's about it. It's not a "disaster," it seems to be a decent game. But it's not the masterpiece / Square's return to form the demo led us to believe.
I only listed the (supposed, I haven't played it) flaws, obviously. And some of those aren't even flaws, "it's not an RPG, it's an action game" isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm just pointing out what some reviewers said they didn't like about the game.

A bunch of reviews say the story is really good, but these are the same idiots that claimed ToTK had an amazing story, so I personally don't believe it.
I haven't liked any FF story besides 7 which I love, and 9 and 10 at least had solid characters, so I'm debating skipping all cutscenes that aren't a spectacle and just ignoring the story.
I think X had the best overall story. The way it tricks you into thinking it's an isekai, and then a time travel story, and then revealing it was neither of those was pretty great and the ending cutscene is arguably one of the most kino endings in the history of the franchise.

Yeah this is basically it, you do flashy stuff to finish fights "faster"; unfortunately, if you have a brain, you've likely optimized your basic combo 10 hours in. at that point it's just adding abilities. Sadly, the fights are already VERY EASY, even in FF mode honestly. Chronolith Trials are good, but outside of that the difficulty is like playing KH2 on normal.
They needed to give Clive a much bigger moveset OR made eikon's edit his basic stuff (only Odin really does this).
It's funny when I say that KH2/3 Sora feels like he can do more than Clive in terms of moveset, but it's 100% true.
They needed to make the game harder and make Eikon's actually alter basic/magic attacks. Clive is literally just Nero without the actual cool Nero things.
I got three things from demo
1. dodge at correct timing to get buff
2. Save some ability cooldown when you are about to get enemies staggered
3. pick up 3 correct abilities in NG+
I am looking forward to see speed-run for difficult bosses.
Also on top of this, if you optimize; Boss design in this game is FRICKED. What ends up happening is you break their stagger and dump as many cooldowns as possible.
This is usually enough to bump them down to their next phase, which usually starts off with a 5 seconds QTE that if you succeed, you stagger the boss AGAIN. And get your cooldowns restored to do another burst.
And this is pretty much the case for most bossfights (usually it takes 3-4 burst phases (not the free ones) to take out a boss).
There's no secret boss that tests all your knowledge either, S rank hunts are fun but there's only a handful of them.
If you want a actual challenge in this game, I suggest removing all pots from the start. And purposefully keep yourself underleveled by avoiding side content/basic enemy killing.
All in all. Personally FF16 is a masterpiece IF you solely look at the spectacle, because this shit is amazing.
However, from both a action game and arpg perspective, there have been far better. FF16 isn't bad, but it's in desperate need of balance changes and more things for Clive to do. It falls flat before DMC V, KH3RM, and even Bayo 3 in terms of combat design. Something like SoP does both the action game, and action rpg things better.
Keep in mind I am not saying what they have here is BAD. Just that there isn't nearly enough of it.
My hopes are for a KH remind style superbosses in the DLC. That actually force you to play well and have minimal QTE interruptions.

After the big flashback, you see Clive using the power on the phoenix on Joshua's chest and then walking away. My interpretation is that he made up for his failure in the prologue and succeeded in reviving him

The power of the phoenix can't revive the dead. If Joshua couldn't save himself with the phoenix, there is no way he could be saved without it. The flashback was just an emotional moment for Clive, there was no point of powering though anything or breaking the odds after it, Clive just gave up and accepted his brother is dead and there is nothing he can do but avenge him.

As a person who just finished FF16 (got a the game last week) I can easily say this is my favorite FF along with FF14. But one of the reason is that I believe that the Trio survived in the ending. If not the game can burn and rot in hell. Amazing journey will start the final fantasy mode tomorrow.

-Very bad performance. It drops below 30 FPS and/or 720p at times.
-It's a movie game, you put the controller down and watch long cutscenes a lot. But I guess that's expected from Final Fantasy.
-The story is great at the start, it goes to shit halfway through. Someone even said the demo is the best part of the game.
-Zero RPG elements, it's an action game through and through.
-Zero exploration, it's completely linear.
-Sidequests are shit, "collect 10 bear asses" MMO garbage.
-The combat itself is great, but the game is so easy you can beat every encounter by spamming random buttons. In order to unlock hard difficulty, you need to beat the game once.
-Eikon fights are boring.
That's about it. It's not a "disaster," it seems to be a decent game. But it's not the masterpiece / Square's return to form the demo led us to believe.

Yeah this is basically it, you do flashy stuff to finish fights "faster"; unfortunately, if you have a brain, you've likely optimized your basic combo 10 hours in. at that point it's just adding abilities. Sadly, the fights are already VERY EASY, even in FF mode honestly. Chronolith Trials are good, but outside of that the difficulty is like playing KH2 on normal.
They needed to give Clive a much bigger moveset OR made eikon's edit his basic stuff (only Odin really does this).
It's funny when I say that KH2/3 Sora feels like he can do more than Clive in terms of moveset, but it's 100% true.
They needed to make the game harder and make Eikon's actually alter basic/magic attacks. Clive is literally just Nero without the actual cool Nero things.
I got three things from demo
1. dodge at correct timing to get buff
2. Save some ability cooldown when you are about to get enemies staggered
3. pick up 3 correct abilities in NG+
I am looking forward to see speed-run for difficult bosses.
Also on top of this, if you optimize; Boss design in this game is FRICKED. What ends up happening is you break their stagger and dump as many cooldowns as possible.
This is usually enough to bump them down to their next phase, which usually starts off with a 5 seconds QTE that if you succeed, you stagger the boss AGAIN. And get your cooldowns restored to do another burst.
And this is pretty much the case for most bossfights (usually it takes 3-4 burst phases (not the free ones) to take out a boss).
There's no secret boss that tests all your knowledge either, S rank hunts are fun but there's only a handful of them.
If you want a actual challenge in this game, I suggest removing all pots from the start. And purposefully keep yourself underleveled by avoiding side content/basic enemy killing.
All in all. Personally FF16 is a masterpiece IF you solely look at the spectacle, because this shit is amazing.
However, from both a action game and arpg perspective, there have been far better. FF16 isn't bad, but it's in desperate need of balance changes and more things for Clive to do. It falls flat before DMC V, KH3RM, and even Bayo 3 in terms of combat design. Something like SoP does both the action game, and action rpg things better.
Keep in mind I am not saying what they have here is BAD. Just that there isn't nearly enough of it.
My hopes are for a KH remind style superbosses in the DLC. That actually force you to play well and have minimal QTE interruptions.

After the big flashback, you see Clive using the power on the phoenix on Joshua's chest and then walking away. My interpretation is that he made up for his failure in the prologue and succeeded in reviving him
The power of the phoenix can't revive the dead. If Joshua couldn't save himself with the phoenix, there is no way he could be saved without it. The flashback was just an emotional moment for Clive, there was no point of powering though anything or breaking the odds after it, Clive just gave up and accepted his brother is dead and there is nothing he can do but avenge him.

As a person who just finished FF16 (got a the game last week) I can easily say this is my favorite FF along with FF14. But one of the reason is that I believe that the Trio survived in the ending. If not the game can burn and rot in hell. Amazing journey will start the final fantasy mode tomorrow.
