      >Dylan. A soldier with a tragic fate.

The ending cutscene with its phenomenal CGI and high framerate is still impressive to me today just as it was back in the day.

Yeah, aeshtetics and atmosphere are excellent for an action game. Hard mode is unforgiving due to how often you end up with bleeding status and you really feel bad every time you take unnecessary damage and ruin a combo.

I've only played the first one, which I love and have avoided the second one because I heard it is not survival horror.

2 goes back to prerendered backgrounds compared to the fully-3d DC1. Its still tank controls but now you earn points by killing, you can chain combos but combos only net you bonus points if you go through the section (room) without taking damage. This is what makes the gameplay loop so satisfying and fun. Weapons are varied, some are shared between the two characters but largely they have their own arsenal (Dylan - shotgun, rifle, single shot weapons that are powerful and Regina who got automatic weapons instead).

Prerendered backgrounds are gorgeous. Pacing of the game is pretty great, game constantly tosses new mechanics at you and introduces different mini games and set pieces to keep things interesting. I'd argue it's a single example where a franchise went more towards an action game approach and it was actually a good choice due to how fun the end product is.

it felt like they created one great jungle island with perfect game flow before the producers told them to add more content, so they just tacked on a bunch of mini-games and that slow af underwater section

But underwater section is great. It changes things completely and by the time you finish it you feel tremendous relief being on the surface again. It added tension and I enjoyed it a lot.

The jungle section which is kind of open to exploration reminds of mgs3 but mostly just because it's a jungle. They are different because in mgs3 you mostly just head north and do very little backtracking but dc2 you go back and forth to open new doors and find stuff. In that regards it's like mgs2 plant.

Best entry of the franchise, loved the more action-arcade take on the gameplay

I actually preferred this to the first one, even though I love PS1 survival horror games. It felt like DC2 became its own thing rather than just "RE with dinosaurs". I haven't played the third game but I do have a soft-modded OG Xbox, so I could one day.

Parasite Eve. The second one is closer to the capcom games.

          >Parasite Eve
I was just shitting on that game in a Square thread for the whatever mechanic it is that forces you to change armor otherwise one of your action or energy bars slows down. Other than that I think it's pretty cool. Some of the dialogue seems pretty silly from what I remember, like someone freaking out at the police officer's man-at-arms for being a gun nut.

          >The second one is closer to the capcom games.
I want to go back and give this one a shot because it looks like some silly fun.
Does Dino Crisis 2 run well on a PS2 with the PS1 fast disc speed option and texture filtering option enabled? Seems like it should given the year it released.

This game felt huge when I was a kid, then I replayed it as an adult and beat it in like 2 hours. It's still great though, I love the ambience, from the jungle to the abandoned facilities. Underwater section is creepy.

    This game is genuine masterpiece.
Beat it millions of times and it's fun in every playthrough (though I dislike the underwater segment)

wish it wasn't released shortly before PS2 hype because it went under the radar too quick

it's basically the peak of the PSX fixed camera angle genre before the next generation made fixed angles obsolete.

This game is le bad if you are a perfectionist when you try to start the game and clear the areas with best scores (don't break combo or take damage) but you get more credits later in the game so you will still make it thru.

Not speedrunning but I once just stopped playing after 5 minutes on new game when I missed too many combos lol but I added that you don't have to get the combos right and you will still get the good unlockables later.

I get you. S grade on Hard New game is quite a challenge too. At least for me as a child I couldn't pass certain areas without farming points to buy a specific weapon.

Game is almost great, shame the fixed camera angle and enemy spawn point don't mix very well in plenty of areas which end up hurting the appeal of the scoring system when you get hit so often by out of camera enemies.
It is way better than the first DC though, although the final hour of the game was pretty fricking bland and enemy variety wasn't that good.
Really wish Capcom would continue DC as the "action horror series" they wanted to make with stuff like RE5 and 6 while keeping RE more focused on survival horror.

It's been a while since I played but I recall if you get hit once when entering a new area, the "no damage" bonus is gone forever but I'm not sure. Before save states existed, you would just load the save if you fricked one are and even with save states the game loses it's fun quickly if you aim for good scores. Even tho in the second half of game I think you get great scores by doing nothing. I think it was the part where sea monsters appear while you are running on the docks or so? You get good points and the monsters are too slow to do anything to you.

        >It's been a while since I played but I recall if you get hit once when entering a new area, the "no damage" bonus is gone forever but I'm not sure.
Yup, the no damage bonus is gone if you take any type of damage and yeah the game is at its most fun when you're trying to aim for a high score and avoid taking damage, but that gets kinda ruined when the chances of getting hit by off-screen dinosaurs is kinda high.
        >Even tho in the second half of game I think you get great scores by doing nothing. I think it was the part where sea monsters appear while you are running on the docks or so? You get good points and the monsters are too slow to do anything to you.
Yeah, in that section if you buy the assault rifle for Regina, the enemies all die in a single hit so you get an insane amount of points with no effort. Overall I'd say the later half is very weak due to that and the lackluster boss fights with the giant t-rex thing.

Basically RE4 if it was made for the PS1. I'd like to see a "remake" of sorts that is rendered 100% in real-time, but replicates the existing graphical style 1:1. Make the characters look exactly like their CGI renders too.

    >solid fun action game
    >have some shitty mini games and gimmick segments instead

Why did so many late 90s early 00s action games push for this shit? I don't know a single person who enjoys this shit so I'm going to blame reviewers for making a big deal out of this shit. I genuinely think reviewers are generally in line with the average player but not like this.

It's probably used to spice up and make the gameplay more interesting as in not exactly the same from start to finish, but it doesn't always work. Like if there's an action game and you stop to solve a puzzle or just to explore something, it gives the game pacing, or sometimes you are made to learn a new mini game with different controls. It's not always shit but they are rarely the best part of the game.
