The only MUST use mods are xNVSE and NVTF. Reduces crashing, stuttering, and allows you to run the game at over 60fps without any physics issues. Some will also recommend NVAC which basically stops all crashing, but it can cause your save file to corrupt over time so I don't recommend it. The game almost never crashes for me with just NVTF on its own anyway.

As a veteran Stalker, you should absolutely play it first without mods, same with fallout 3 and NV. Play it vanilla for your first playthrough then mod it up.

The game is great until you have to go back and forth to each corner of the map near the end of the game. As for mods I'd recommend watching Gopher's FNV tutorials and picking whatever appeals to you.

Unofficial patch and maybe some cut content stuff is all I would reccomend on a first playthrough.
It's perfectly fine vanilla. B42 Optics for real aim down sights and Just Sprint are nice. Vanilla UI + will improve the UI at higher resolutions. If the vanilla game CTDs sporadically on you you can check the Viva New Vegas guide for their recommended stability mods.

There's also a way to install the Viva New Vegas mod list somewhat automatically with Wabbajack. Viva New Vegas is the de facto Vanilla + modpack that FNV obsessed autists use to get their game to stop crashing all the damn time and as a baseline to start adding mods onto. Just bugfixes and shit. Nothing actually game changing.

I started playing vanilla month ago and have 100 hours, only finished Dead Money DLC and after exhausting tons of side quests and vault explorations i decided to finally talk to Mr. House and get into that Lucky 38 hatch in Legion base
Do honest hearts next it is very short but the items you get afterwards make up for it, great side arm and one of the better rifles in the game.
