I bought the nightopia pack version of this... it's sadly not a good port, they fricked up the controls.
It was coded by chinese people, not japanese.
At least I got the book that came with it.
I actually like the game, unlike most here. The atmosphere, mood, environments, music, and even visuals are really appealing to me, setting a sort of cheerful/playful aura. The gameplay is basic, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome so it is just right to me. I did read the PS2 port does have less accurate analog controls compared to the original Saturn release, which explains its poorer feeling in controls, but it is at least on a system that more people have. I even like the graphics, since I like large scaled pixels, and the game utilizes those along with its "polygons" well.
The book was my reason to get it. As I've opted to play the Saturn version.
I personally like the Saturn OST version, for the new ones, have been lengthened, but doesn't respect perfectly the emphasis of the original ones. They seems to circle around with tones, just to make the soundtrack longer and nothing more.
You rack up a high score by a risk reward mechanic. You go from level start to finish, along the way you have barriers you have to collect enough blue spheres to break. You have a timer going.
If you collect enough blue spheres, you can choose to skip the barrier and replay the section getting major bonus points. But if the timer runs out it's over. So you speed your way through using your dexterity and knowledge of the segment to rack up points, avoiding running out of time before you smash the barrier and do the next section.
It's a high score based game where you can completely miss the fact that that's the point of it.
