slow progression and story but it's chill. There's also very hardcore content if you're into that kind of thing

How hardcore? The most difficult encounters in the game are multi-stage endurance battles lasting from 15-20 minutes with more fail states and tighter DPS checks than you can shake a wand at.

I was enjoying myself until i realized half the game is playing itself through me through forced cutscenes that i don't give a shit about.
Can't believe i'm saying this but WoW was a much more enjoyable experience.

You're in for a fun game if you have the patience for a story that starts off boring due to the required world-building in the beginning.
    t. played the game for a decade and still love it

hundreds of hours of a mostly single player main story quest that starts slow, gets really good, dips a bit, then gets REALLY good, then dips a bit but is still good

surprisingly high amount of actual girl players, also way too high amount of trannies and legitimate psychopaths that play the game

great music and cinematic feel to fights later on

It's good if you ignore the whole "MMO" part. I would say just treat it as a standard single player final fantasy, but since you said you have never played ff before, I wouldn't start with this one.

      >but since you said you have never played ff before, I wouldn't start with this one.
I'd actually suggest FFXIV is one of the best starter FF games. You dont need any prior knowledge at all, and people are pretty open about how XIV is their first in the series as well. A lot of people expand out to the other FF games after having tried XIV for the first time and liking it

      >I wouldn't start with this one
literally the most you get out of playing the old ones is "oh that's from X" game, which means nothing in the context of 14 since it's its own story

The only helpful thing from other games is basic familiarity with the jobs. In other respects it's better to have not played the rest of the series so all the references/callbacks just seem like original content instead.

    >I'm not afraid of discovery.
Doesn't add up. Anyway, skip the irrelevant story. Watch a 3 minute recap on youtube, you won't miss anything of any importance. Realize it's the same treadmill with new
    >top tier
gear every 6 months, that you get by raiding, then quit the game and play something worth your time.
If you have the balls to discover, then I dare you to play Single Player Offline Games. Start with those you missed because you were playing braindead shit like WoW for decades. So from apprx. 2003 up to today.

It's a single player MMO. Just avoid the players, especially the data center of Balmung as it is packed to the fricking brim of ERPers and trannies. Lisa Lominsa being their hang out.

There's a massive main story behind which everything else is locked. If you enjoy reading and learning about the world and the characters, you'll have a good time. If you find yourself skipping lots of cutscenes then it's really not the game for you.
At level 50, and every 10 levels afterwards, you hit a prior endgame and can do some optional hard content if you want (extreme trials and savage raids) which are pretty fun.
The jobs (aka classes) are static with no customisation, but in many cases are tightly designed and satisfying to play. They'll feel very slow at first due to the 2.5s base GCD but get faster once you unlock more buttons to weave in between GCDs. Don't play a healer as your first one, they're really boring to level through the story.

Would this be a good game for someone's first MMO?

Asking for myself; I've never played an MMO but I want to try something new.

It's the least grindy MMO out right now so yeah. The story takes a while but if you don't have severe ADHD or the patience of a squirrel (see: most of this board) you'll enjoy it.
Think of it like this: First you play a pretty decent JRPG, then you get to the meat. Once you're done with the meat, there's another decent JRPG, then some more meat. Repeat for every expansion.
Also stay the frick away from Lalafell players as much as possible

        >least grindy
In what fricking world. It is least grindy if its between it and wow. Otherwise no.
Ffxiv is extremely basic and leveling is the biggest chore in history of mmorpgs. Story at the start is fricking horrible and the zones look bad. Classes are also uninspired and the gameplay is okay/good.
Wouldn't recommend you play it, it is a massive time waster and worse than any other final fantasy game.

Do you understand what grinding is? Simply following the MSQ and levelling alongside it is not grinding.

          Anonymous

You follow the story quest, it takes you to max level, and you can instantly have item level 640 gear and go raid for fun, while a 10k hour sweaty hardcore raider has at most item level 660 gear. Unless you consider playing the story to be a grind, there is no mandatory grinding at all. In other games you might need to spend dozens of hours killing overworld mobs and doing random unimportant quests for exp, then once you're at max level you do hundreds of dungeon runs so you can get the gear to start the first tier of raids. FFXIV just gives it all to you for free

          >leveling is the biggest chore in history of mmorpg
You haven't played old MMOs and it shows. Compared to RuneScape or FF11 this shit is nothing.
          >Story at the start is horrible
Eh it's mid until Titan, then good until Ultima, then kinda mid until 2.4, then good till Stormblood. And after base Stormblood you're in the clear.
          >Zones look bad
Texture wise sure. IMO Heavensward zones are the worst. The rest are tolerable-to-good.
          >Classes are uninspired
There's certain things you can't really do in multiplayer games that you can do in singleplayer games. In sp rpgs, low health berserker mechanics are fine. In this your class would get fricking blacklisted if it had that. It makes up for this issue in that you can play any class at all times, though most MMO players are too stuck on the idea of having a main.

TL;DR you're wrong but entitled to your opinion. Also I fricked your mom.
