What am I not understanding about this game? I want to like Sonic 3, because I loved Sonic 1 and 2, but it's extremely frustrating and tedious.
>constant surprise spikes and hidden enemies
>stages are way too big, there's an actual risk of timing out
>tons of boosts that make you go too fast to control or choose a route, which end anticlimactically when you collide with some random object
>weird bosses with unclear or gimmicky solutions
>camera is often pulled too close to sonic, so you can't see what's ahead of you
>tedious sections that require you to spin-boost
>finicky glitchy gimmicks like the spinning tops and barrels
What am I not understanding about this game? It took me a long time to learn to like Sonic 1 and 2, because I didn't understand that they were about managing speed, not building speed, and were more about slowing down. So what's the secret to Sonic 3? Everyone online says it's the best, but it seems nakedly inferior to 1 and 2 to me.

Just what we need another Sonic thread
S3 was kinda rushed, as Sonic Team was developing STH3D and had to be scraped due to SVP chip shortage.
I still think it's a great game though, but S&K was a bit better.
Still 1 and 2 are untouchable, especially Sonic 1, the best Sonic game.
I do not understand how people can have trouble with the classic sonic games.
Do they seriously run into a few spikes and get frustrated over it? Grab some rings and don't hit them again the next time, moron.
You're not responding to my OP, you're just responding to some bullshit you've invented in your head. I said I like Sonic 1 and 2, I dislike 3.
Your first point was "surprise spikes and enemies".
They're not a surprise if you play the game more than once.
In Sonic 1 and 2, you can almost always see enemies coming WITHOUT memorization, and you can also react more quickly if you are surprised because sonic moves way faster and has better mid air control.
Sonic 1 and 2 also has enemies and spikes that you're going to hit your first time playing. You said "it took you a long time to like them" which means you played them a few times and memorized their levels.
>because sonic moves way faster and has better mid air control.
He controls more or less the same in 2 and 3. 1's controls are a bit stiff.
It didn't take me a long time to like them as in
>I played them over and over again
But as in
>I played the first couple levels over and over, got frustrated, and gave up
Then I saw a post about how the key to the game is to throttle your speed, not build up speed, and I began to enjoy the game and beat it in a couple days
Who cares, pick up your rings and soldier on
So your problem is Sonic 3 isn't a game you can just speed through in one sitting. You have to actually turn your brain on and think.
Lol, stop trying to cram a million games into your "2023 media thread" and just git gud.
(Vanilla) Sonic 3 is awesome. Easily my favorite of the 4. Once you find paths you like its great. Maybe there's a little bit more exploring if you're newer, but I don't think the level design is bad. Definitely less just straight auto running sections than 2 though. I dunno man. I get liking 1 and 2 the best, but shit like hydrocity and icecap zone with their awesome songs and weird mechanics just make it my most replayed.
So is it just a matter of memorization? The levels are so big and contain so many repeating elements I'm finding it a lot harder to remember where stuff is than in sonic 2, even playing without continues.
Game for babies.
You must suck at sonic of you cant beat sonic 3.
I beat Sonic 1 and 2, not sure what point you're trying to make.
He’s saying that you must’ve beat 1 & 2 by luck because you suck at sonic if you are having trouble with 3.
homie what would beating a platformer "by luck" even consist of. I didn't use save states and I didn't run out of lives, what further proof of competence could there be.
>homie what would beating a platformer "by luck" even consist of
Luckily stumbling through all the obstacles until you win, without ever learning or even knowing you were in danger.
You've never seen Mr. Magoo?
Kek, I love Mr. Magoo. Also, somic games were designed so even children can stumble through some of the levels. But I dare anybody to hold right to win in labrynth zone act 2.
The more you play the levels, the more fast you can go and the more fun you have. It's like a racing game.
You can go Super really early in this game if you're good enough too. So it's a really fun game to familiarise yourself with.
I immediately dropped it because the first level looks like absolute dog shit as soon as that nuke goes off. Those orange tones burn themselves into your eyes. Just not fun to play anyway with those dumb lianas and everyhting
Horrible franchise all around
What a baby, holy shit.
He's scared of the colour orange.
Games should look nice and understand color composition
Looks great. Sonic and the Boss are clearly visible against the orange hues.
Orange and blue are complimentary colors.
Yeah there's a lot of tards on /vr/ who are just terrified of earthen colours because idk they're fricking moronic and their severe autism leads to a meltdown when not fed with blue and red (or a combination thereof)
Case in point, never mind that Sonic is fricking blue and therefore pops against the orange background
I just hate how much the little playable "cutscenes" slow down the replays.
It's about 2 minutes total over both cartridges.
Yeah that doesn't sound like a lot.
It's almost zero in the previous games and cd though!
>It's almost zero in the previous games and cd though
CD's cutscenes are 12 minutes total.
What are we talking about here?
Are you talking about the skippable intro animation? I don't remember anything making you wait in CD, other than metal sonic and amy for a bit.
You didn't mention anything about them being skippable. I was looking at all cutscenes, if you took them out it would be shorter yes.
Unfortunately you'd have to play CD tho, which I can't recommend.
Yeah, skippable brings the best of both worlds.
Also CD is the best of all the classic ones , and the only one where the levels are designed in a way that truly lets you play around with sonic's physics.
Hard disagree. They didn't even get the spin dash right. It takes so long to charge up you may as well not use it
>not pretending to be in control of Robotnik's orb the whole time
you're missing out.
That part was so embarrassing haha
moron, slide thread
I've always preferred Sonic 2 brisked pace and more varied zones. I only like half of the 6 zones in Sonic 3 and despite each only being 2 acts the longer length often makes them outstay their welcome. Its best played when combined with Sonic & Knuckles which does make some minor tweaks to the Sonic 3 stages.
These days you're better off just playing Sonic 3 AIR over the original for the widescreen support, extended camera and a bunch of other things you can tweak to your liking.

Damn it, why couldn't you have showed me this a year ago?

bruh, 3 is easier than 2. you got strong powerups and if you pick tails you literally can fly. you have a level select. sm.h.
is it 3 or K that starts with the jungle level btw? idk anyway I usually pick 3&K. but the game is long lol.
Have you tried getting good? It might help.
>stages are way too big
This is my only complain. Marble Garden is also just fricking boring
2 was peak Sonic. 3 just feels slow in comparison.
