I was watching the anime as a kid I just didn't have my own computer and internet access to watch all the episodes until I was already starting to get bored of the anime, and even my viewership up to that point had been patchy since I was watching it on public television, not from a library of tapes.

meh, there's not really an important plot or anything. the anime is pretty much a glorified commercial. don't think anyone's gonna bother making a watch guide. I would just jump around and watch what's interesting to you. watch a few episodes about pokemon you like, and if you like a certain cast of characters, watch more of their season.

A lot of the early anime is borderline filler that can be summed up like this
    >character of the week shows up
    >hit it off with the gang
    >team rocket shows up to steal weekly character Pokémon and/or Pikachu
    >someone (usually Ash) slaps their shit around
    >team rocket blasting off etc
    >gang part ways with character of the week
Some people like that, but if you are looking to make actual progress on the gargantuan 1000 episode meal before you, it’s probably worth speeding through those or just skipping them. Burnout will hit you hard otherwise

      Two questions then
      1. Has anyone ever made a watch guide? I know other big shows like Naruto have them and when you omit filler it cuts the episode count by like 50%
      2. Besides the OP/ED, is there anything in the episodes you can skip? For example, the One Piece anime has a 7-10 minute recap at the start of every episode. So when you skip that and the OP/ED you get the episode down to 10-15 minutes a pop

1.there is a watchguide but only for the XY seasons, you can ask for it on /padt/

2.uh...you can skip the entire show.
BIG SPOILER: Being a Pokemon Master is defined by Ash to be "the person who befriends all the Pokemon in the world". No this isn't epic, it's actually extremely anticlimatic in the context of the show since it focuses way more on actual league competition on the rare occasion it progress the plot, in a very specific algorithm. (badges - league admission - league conference). Boiling it down to some friendship crap actually goes against the morale of the Hoenn league where the show basically says that friendship should not get into the way of fair competition.

Basically there's no coherent story or worldbuilding after the Kalos seasons, you could easily skip SM and JN. Everything before that is worth a watch though, all of the movies are worth seing too, even the newer ones.

          >BIG SPOILER: Being a Pokemon Master is defined by Ash to be "the person who befriends all the Pokemon in the world".
in the very last episode I mean.

I usually don't spoil stuff but this is so idiotic and anti-cathartic even by ashnime standards that I won't concede.

Also I'd recommend watching all the movies first.

Really for a super condensed vision - I'd just recommend watching movie 5 - Pokemon Heroes - and from then on you decide whtehr you wanna see it or not.

Also movie 5 is going to play a CRUCIAL part in JN - the last season so you better start off wth movie 5.

          Okay here's my reccomendation.
          - movie 5 Pokemon Heroes!!! Must watch, it's awesome and seinenish even by normal seinen anime standards, feels kinda like a Miyazaki movie even. The only movie where the animators REALLY took the show seriously.

-Movies from 1 to 23 (I guess 3 of movies a day would be okay, hmm...but still, watching more than 1 per day isn't really satisfying, more like, confusing even)

-All of the ashnime from episode 1 up to the end of XYZ

-SM is like. Whatever but you can watch it by that point

-JN is kinda underwhelming but it has a huge subplot that delivers on the characters and secret lore from movie 5 Pokemon Heores so I guess you should see it.

          That's it!

Naruto is based on a manga, where episode are either direct adaptations of manga chapters or anime-original stuff that "fills" weeks between the episodes adapting the manga. These never really add to the story because the story was written for the manga and not the anime.

Pokemon doesn't work like that, it's all anime-original material loosely following a video game.

Anon, you have to understand this is a children's show, there is no complicated plot, the episodes are also rarely connected, plot-wise, you could jump into almost any episode and understand what's happening, given a few exceptions where a section of the story is segmented into multiple episodes
To understand the pokemon world, both watching the anime and playing the games works, though the stories are different
In conclusion, don't watch the anime if you don't enjoy it, the sparse amount of lore in it doesn't justify it, however, if what you want to learn about is specifically the anime characters and the world, then skipping episodes doesn't really makes sense, since every episode explores the anime a bit more, some more than others

      >A lot of the early anime is borderline filler
I hate when people call the anime filler, what is the canon then? It is an entirely different story, with the only connection to the games being the world itself, there is no filler or canon, since there is no material that the story (not the world) is based on
You can say it feels like filler, though, that's different

When people talk about Pokemon filler they mean “episodes that don’t affect the overall plot”. Most character of the day episodes fall into that category.

Correct. An episode being filler doesn’t make it bad, in fact many of the best Pokemon episodes are filler.

              Anonymous

I never said filler meant that the episode is bad
              >many of the best Pokemon episodes are filler
There are no filler episodes, as I have said in my initial post, this label does not make sense

                Anonymous

The definition of filler episodes are “episodes that are unrelated to the main plot and don’t impact relations between characters”. When people talk about anime filler then they mean episodes that has stories that wasn’t in the source material.
For example the episode where Ash is crossing cycling road is a filler episode despite cycling road being in the games because it has no bearing on the plot whatsoever.

                >the source material
What source material? There is none, it's a different story
I guess you could call the episodes that don't impact the plot "filler", but the meaning of filler is so vastly used to mean "not present in the source material", especially when talking about anime, that I find it non-sensical

This. Anipoke fans always throw around the term filler incorrectly. Pokemon doesn’t have filler. It is an original story. There is no source material like the Dragon Ball manga.

There is no specific definition for filler. If it doesn’t progress the story and is never referenced again, it’s filler

                Anonymous

It's an adaptation of the world created for Pokemon Red and Green, so any locations or characters that didn't appear in the game and aren't parallels to existing game characters that don't meaningfully bring anything to character arcs or story progress are absolutely filler.
The Orange Islands, for example, an original location that was made exclusively for the anime, were it not for Ash catching Snorlax and Charizard deciding to no longer be a massive homosexual, would be completely skippable as nothing of actual consequence happens. Even the GS Ball plot can be ignored because the anime itself said "frick that" in favor of the movie Pokemon 4Ever.

It is still an original story. It is not like DBZ or Naruto that actually has filler episodes not based on anything from the manga. What does actual consequence even mean? Pokemon has never had some huge long-term narrative.

These episodes do NOTHING for the main plot and exist for no other purpose than to fill the timeslot for that week because of Japan’s moronic cable rules. Agreeing with , though I'll give some more detail.
All of Kanto and Orange Islands.
For Johto, following the watch guide, all the non-filler episodes or all non-filler up until EP143 (GS Ball abandoned) or EP146 (Wobbuffet joins Team Rocket), then skip to the league for closure.
Hoenn is only good for May's contest arc. Rest of AG starting from the league and encompassing the Battle Frontier is decent enough from what I remember.
Rehash burnout hit for me in Sinnoh, so I don't recommend any beyond AG, or Orange Islands if you want to be extra cynical.
The first 5 movies are recommended along with movies 8 and 21.
Most Specials I would recommend with varying reasons from not featuring Ash, doing something different, or just cute Pokémon doing cute things.
All anime listed in the watch guide's Other tab are recommended and have no continuity with the main commercial anime.
Dub is fine for most, but Sub is a must for any Special in the Chronicles series (Chronicles's dub is really bad.), Movie 5 (Backstory cut from dub, original dub release ruined the colors.), and maybe anything after TPCi took over the dub during the middle of the Battle Frontier.
