What are examples of publishers fricking over game developers?

I heard people on Ganker say to avoid publishers, but no one post a link showing why.

The game would have been in development hell for eternity until it eventually collapsed if the publisher hadn't forced their hand.

Because publishers offer nothing in a world where you can distribute games yourself digitally and advertise games yourself through social media.

Which publishers? You need to be more specific.

20 Years ago publishers actually did something to localize, package, distribute and market your game. Today they'll just foward you some money for wages while doing none of the other stuff and in return they'll take all of your profits until they get their money back and after they'll take most of the revenue instead of all. Also they may include clauses to steal your IP under certain conditions in the contract.

It's happened to a bunch of indie devs who've gone bankrupt due to publishers. Basically would you ever do business with a israelite?

Volition. Apparently Gangster shit was going to be the theme for the SR reboot but Deep Silver execs said no and said to pander to the Twitter crowd

      Anonymous

Also this, they can demand creative control of your game and also they can prevent you from working with anyone else if you don't like them. It's just like how a realtor can have you sign an exclusive contract which only lets you work with them for 6 months etc and if you sell the house using anyone else during that time they will sue you for damages.

Literal scummiest parasites you can imagine.

Not just the reboot, publishers fricked over SR3. It was supposed to be much darker and closer to SR2 in tone with a much more coherent story but THQ forced them to rewrite it a dozen times and add tons of wacky shit because that's what makes money. When THQ went under, Volition made sure to add a couple of jabs at them in SR4.

What are those jabs? I must have missed them since SR4 was all over the place

It's a real quick blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment. When you overload the simulation and force it to shut down, if you look at the mock console screen, you'll see some lines that say shit to the effect of "ERROR: TeeAychCue_OUT_OF_MONEY" mixed in with the other code.

I spent like half an hour trying to figure out what game she was from, so it was effective, but I never found the answer, so it wasn't.

There is a 2D souls like Metroidvania called Vigil that recently got pulled from stores because they made some reference to Taiwans existence, like a word spelled backwards or something and the publisher freaked out and pulled the game down.

Eidos killed CORE Design and classic Tomb Raider, Interplay killed Black Isle then themselves. Recently Square Enix screwed up both Deus Ex and Hitman.

Nicalis stole Cave Story from pixel and have been milking it for 3 re-releases already while leaving him to rot with only Kero Blaster to his name
Some publishers are ok though like New Blood but those are just a bunch of devs that said "hey why not help other devs publish their works too could be fun"

I'm amazed Future Club (skullgirl thieves) aren't the first to be mentioned. Especially since they begged steam AGAIN to remove negative reviews and lock all topics in the hub on the matter

I'm just sad Alex and Mike didn't team up to make the skullgirls killer to fund the rebuy of the IP that they should own by all the rights.
No Indivisible does not count the only thing it killed is itself plus i'm fairly sure Mike didn't make it he just worked on it until he got fired

Don't forget mike actually censored alot of Alex's stuff which he wasnt happy about. Then didnt defend him when other artists were soi with him because they claimed he was difficult to work with. It's like wtf! HES the actual artist of the whole cast and they just piggie backed off his work.....kinda like what FC have been doing for the past 5 years with his cutting room floor shit.
I mean frick Marie's chest has already been censored (flattened) and shes not even out yet

It can go the other way too. See Gearbox & Sega with Alien: Colonial Marines where Gearbox took Segas money and funneled it into other projects instead of what they were contractually obligated to use it towards.

People always blame EA but I have it on good authority that both Bioware and Respawn were the sole responsibles for their frickups.

EA is actually hands-off with their studios pretty much.

People hate EA because of their israeli practices and killing companies/franchises while being responsible for the state they're in. The only I can think is worse is Dangen. Like at least EA don't outright acts like they hate their moneymakers.
