That's Zero. Widely considered as one of THE worst games in the series, and not a good starting point.
Then you should by all means play classic RE1-3 and FF1-3.

the blunt answer is that there aren't any aside from ones you already know, try fatal frame if you haven't. otherwise siren is the best of them awkward as it is, still has top tier art direction. rule of rose and clocktower 3 play just as bad and are much goofier. western stuff is 6/10 bargain bin shite.

This. Seeing old levels slowly turning in to a man made hive thing and seeing shibito evolving was awesome.
I liked seeing all the characters slowly going mad. The faces look so good, perfect horror style

I suppose it could be a manner of semantics, but good horror games usually are paced in a particular way, the setup and payoff of scares is distinct from the way most games play out. it's not just a coat of paint. a game could have great gameplay but without a well executed structure it will be a tepid horror game.
