Goldfinger 64 works "somewhat" well on actual hardware. There are some levels where the framerate drops significantly, but if you've played Perfect Dark or Banjo-Tooie then it's nothing new. There's also areas that are almost too dark, but turning up your screen's brightness can help.

For Ocarina of Time there's The Missing Link, Dawn & Dusk, Master of Time, the recent Spaceworld Mod, and some others that aren't as significant. There's some Zelda themed hacks for Banjo Kazooie by Kurko Mods based on Ocarina of TIme, Majora's Mask and Wind Waker that I believe are compatible with actual hardware. Paper Mario Black Pit if you're okay with roguelike elements. Mario 64 has all kinds of hacks but you'll need to research which ones are playable on real hardware, only more recently have modders put more of an effort into making sure they're playable on real hardware.

There's also Tomorrow Never Dies 64

The campaign has been fully complete since December or so and has gotten a few updates, the latest one is from last month, check n64vault. Maybe you're thinking of The Spy Who Loved Me 64 which is for sure not complete yet.

I wanted to like it, but the levels are TOO FRICKING BIG. The distance fog clips out 20' in front of you while the level is 3 miles long and you have to walk from one end to the other and back. The nighttime levels are borderline unplayable. only the interior levels are passable.

goldeneye hackroms are fricking shit because they push the engine more than the console can handle and they do bandaids like disabling anti aliasing for extra frames which makes them look like shit on hardware

Smash Remix is pretty impressive even if there's some dumb shit in there, its pretty cool to bust out when there are friends over if they have no concept of romhacks

    Smash Remix
you won't find a better Romhack on the system and it makes the game excellent
you need the expansion pack though I think

A good rule of thumb for ambitious hacks is to always assume that they likely require Expansion Pak. Most people will play them on emulators anyway, so limiting yourself to only 4MB of RAM while making a hack isn't really worth it.

This one requires the expansion pack but I played it on real hardware myself last week.

How the frick are you supposed to beat the giant characters in the single player of smash remix? The move sets of certain characters like marth don’t have the power to knock them far enough. My teammates die and I can’t get the match to end.

This has to be one of the worst ROM hacks I've played, but it's console compatible. Wanted to know what others thought of this, it's just downright frustrating but I'm forcing myself to progress because the level design is okayish to decent with only one level that's outright garbage and should've been scrapped. I can never tell what slope will require Talon Trot or not, Metroidvania-like progression while having the fricking note score system, camera doesn't work with the geometry, stuff hidden in fricking far off craters of the level.

Banjo-Kazooie Jiggies of Time is a competently made romhack that works.

Dreamie has the misfortune of being the first B-K romhack made with the new tools, so the guy didn't know what the hell he was doing or how to circumvent the B-K1 limitations (non-permanent note collection, moves, etc.). It's garbage to play, but at least it allowed other, more competent people to make stuff that's actually good.

I honestly dont like any banjo rom hacks. They all just come off as reskins. Even SM64 hacks feel more engaging than that.

    Some mod not mentioned already:

Starfox 64 randomizer (boss rush and random dialog is awesome)

Mario 64 split screen if you have a friend or partner

Jet force gemini has a couple of hacks. One makes it so you have to kill tribals instead of rescue, another makes it so you can skip over the tribals all together.

Goldeneye x brings goldeneye to the perfect dark engine so you can play with bots in this stuff.

I've NEVER been able to get this to work no matter how many times I tried patching and repatching, there's always fricked up textures of half the surfaces

Shiren the Wanderer 2 English translation patch

You just have to modify your save_db.txt file by adding the line:
"SI=3 (Fushigi no Dungeon - Furai no Shiren 2 - Oni Shuurai! Shiren Jou!)"
