A samurai sword can bisect a european knight in full plate with one swing, so a shield wouldn't be any use. You need steel to be about 2 inches thick to stop a katana, and a shield that thick would be too heavy to use.

A samurai sword can bisect a european knight in full plate with one swing, so a shield wouldn't be any use. You need steel to be about 2 inches thick to stop a katana, and a shield that thick would be too heavy to use.
