Well obviously apart form the great mods such as Third age total war and The last day of the Third age for Warband. You will have to wait for Dawnless days Campaign if you want a "modern" Lotr game And it looks great for now
I'm suprised there isn't a single game or mod which set the world of the middle-earth in a timeline were Sauron would get his power back and subjugate the world of man.
I meaned something like a sub campaign, Where you can play as the few still free land of man which would probably be Breeland and the northern cities while all the other kingdom such as Rohan and Gondor would be corrupted

In Ck2 Middlearth men can lose War of the Ring and Minas Tirith. Sauron gets his physical form back and either Aragorn or that guy from Dol Amaroth becomes king of Gondor, leading Gondorians against the Evil. Mod itself is pretty broken and I wouldn't recommend it.
God I fricking wish taleword would put more work into the persistent world mechanic, like every character can write their own destiny becoming a king or starting their own kingdom becoming a renowed bandits etc, That would be the best foundation for a Lotr mod
>like every character can write their own destiny becoming a king or starting their own kingdom becoming a renowed bandits
when has that ever happened in lotr?
A lotr mod for ck2 sounds really dumb
It just isn't a setting like asoiaf with autistic court drama and plotting.
It's good vs bad. The good races never fought against each other.
Conquest was the only one of that list I played more than an hour or 2. Battle for Middle Earth is fricking overrated and boring with garbage mechanics that were never tried again for good reason. Shadow of etc were bamham combat shit full of moronic fanfiction that I dropped in seconds. Never even saw the nemesis system in action. I think I tried War in the North but that was even more fanfic than the shadow games. The playstation games were ok though.

Like said there aren't many modern titles, Battle for Middle Earth and War of the Ring are both definitely worth playing through.
There is a Medieval 2 mod called Third Age: Divide and Conquer that is extremely good, although a little janky because the game released in 2006.

I mean you can get ahold of the ring as Mordor or whatever in Divide and Conquer and bring him back

Aragorn I guess...? It's still a massive stretch.
I mean it wouldn't be 'lore-friendly" and i'm pretty sure if a lotr mod were made for bannerlord it would have a toggle option

the Mount and Blade Warband mod was pretty damn good
what's the most fun faction to play as.
gondor
foreverwar with orcs
Isengard, because once you wiped the good factions Saruman and Sauron get to duke it out.
The two towers and return of the king, battle for middle earth
Shadow of war/mordor are fun but are insufferable from a lore perspective so if you’re looking for a lotr game specifically this is definitely not it
