id tech3 games are in a weird spot. you ask zoomers and they'd just call them "boomer shooters" (not that their opinion matters). they're definitely a major step up from quake 2 era games, but they're also not quite modern. maybe proto-modern because we definitely see a lot of the foundational features here that make them much more robust from 90s games but they're also nigh-unrecognizable compared to anything from the late 2010s.
