What makes them bad? The Superstars announcement made me want to go back and finally play through Sonic 4. I already played the trilogy and CD, most of the Sonic Advance games, and Sonic Rush Adventure. I’ve played the vast majority of the modern Sonic games too barring Sonic Colors and Heroes. The Sonic games that I hear are “terrible” are usually just average at worst
Well. For episode 1 the stage layouts were garbage and the Physic were completely fricked for a 2d game. Sonic could walk up a full incline. Not run. roll. spin dash. Just straight up fricking walk. Even stand there.
I never played part 2 but if the first game was like that I can only assume they didn't improve too much for the second part that released shortly after.

To play devil's advocate; I'd say that Sonic 4: Episode 1 is at least a competent platformer, more akin to Sonic 1's design philosophy before speed became the main focus.

Super Mario Sunshine. Its shitty and feels unfinished janky and unrefined especially for a mario game. Difficulty is all over the place. People like it entirely due to the art style/aesthetics/music etc... and nostalgia for GameCube era kids to young to realize what a disappointment it was after Mario 64.

Agree. It’s not a bad game on its own, but when compared to 1, it’s very much by-the-numbers sequel with far, far more tedious areas and enemies to fight. The couple of cool boss fights in it really don’t come even close to compensating all that.
There's some pretty egregious enemies like the Alpha Blogg I have to admit, but Prime 2 has the most iconic bosses in the trilogy for me, especially Quadraxis.
I replay Prime 2 with the randomizer mod at least once a year. The world's spider web-shaped layout of possible paths between areas is basically perfect for it.
Prime 2 really shot itself in the foot by giving you the Dark suit. It could have been an intense, interesting game, but its own stupid dark world gimmick is rendered pointless by the time you clear the first boss. The danger is gone and all that's left is a bunch of ugly purple areas

Sure, it's no Sonic 3&K but the compositions are actually pretty good, and the Mario & Sonic Olympic remixes prove this. An objective "bad" example would be what they did to the Sonic Origins songs where you can actually directly compare with the beta tracks and what they decided to put in the game.

The Totk comparison doesn't work because you can play the entire game without relying on building shit, there's an entire game outside that gimmick. Nuts and Bolts is intrinsically tied to its gimmick, while also being worse at it because it's miserable to actually build anything in that game, let alone riding what you made.
N&B also has plenty of missions forcing you to use some piece of shit vehicle to handicap you into doing exactly what the devs want since its the only way to spice things up.
