It was a nice treat to have 2 gens on 1 handheld. It added some good designs and pushed the capabilities of the nintendo ds. It also was the last gen not to add any weird gimmicks like mega evolve dynamax z move bullshit. I get the sentiment that it was the last good gen, but I did personally lile XY.

This. Gen 2 had slower health bars and animations.
No gen is slower than gen 4 because every ability activating, every stat raised or lowered, every item consumed had to have its dumb animation and its text explanation written, not simultaneously but one after another, when the health bar was already slow and move animations often not really short either.
Gen 2 and also 3 are way slower in that department as well.
It’s not the health bar that makes Gen 4 slow, it’s the saving and the it takes between dialogue boxes. The difference isn’t much but because those things happen so often it adds up.

Both these are pretty understandable at a surface level. Arceus is specifically stated to be a creator god and Giratinas story has parallels with Lucifer. Extrapolating that further is fan stuff, but the basis is there.

Basically what I'm getting at is if you're a skilled pixel artist, even if Pokemon company does have you on for a game or two, it won't take much to either seek out another job for a competitive salary or use it as a stepping stone to branch out.

Volcarona is strong as frick, Genesect too but it's a mythical, Escavalier is decent, Scolipede sucks ass during the campaign but gets better with HA, Accelgor sucks outright but still has a genuine niche of its own (high speed for safe revenge kills), which leaves Leavanny as the only one who sucks out and out since this is before Sticky Webs.
This is a massive improvement over previous gens where one or two new Bugs per region were conditionally good-maybe outright goof if you got REALLY lucky like Scizor and Heracross-and the rest were absolute deadweight past Gym 4 (and that's being generous) that brought nothing unique to the table that other mons couldn't 1000 times better.

Ruby has the only good version of Hoenn's story. Team Aqua makes no sense and Rayquaza being found by a kid by just walking a flight of stairs then fixing the plot by itself in a 10 second cutscene is utterly stupid

In fact, I played through Black 2 last year for the expressive purpose of playing through White 2 on Challenge Mode a while later. After completing that I barely felt the difference. As long as Gamefreak is too strapped on time to make high level AI it doesn't fricking matter if the games have a hard more or not.
