it's enough to listen to the ost, true. but only after you have beat the game at least once so any time you listen to the ost, it evokes memories of the areas and mood of the game.
there's no way you can tell me that you can enjoy the soundtrack of a game you've never played as much as the one of a game you have played

Not really an RPG but I never played Bloodborne but enjoyed the OST. When I have tried to play it I dropped it in under an hour it was so shit like all fromsoftware games, but the OST is great and makes the atmosphere more than any of those westboo design choices those idiots make.
A more relevant example is DAO. The menu music alone sets up the entire atmosphere. PST's BGM is the first thing I think about when I think about that game. I can still clearly remember both.
Meanwhile a game like BGI or 2, while much better gameplay and have great stories and characters yadda yadda have no atmosphere whatsoever because of shit music or rather not shit, but completely not memorable..
strongly aggre
also
dungeon siege
bioshock1
dishonored 1
mass effect 1 (i gues many will say that)
morowind (heavly moded or the skyrim - morovind mod)
VTMB, STALKER, what else, anything brooding really.
stalker very much (but you need mods for it that fix bugs ) and yes it plays totaly like rpg
this. stalker is a shooter with rpg elements, similar to far cry, etc.
>similar to far cry
have a nice day
System Shock 2 (SS1 has great atmosphere too, but that is not an RPG)
this
robin hood the legend of sherwood ,
risen 1
dragon age 1 (music does it for me)
Divine Divinity and Gothic 1-2
Night of the Raven ruins it for me, thankfully there's a mod that removes it from Gold version.
>Night of the Raven ruins it for me
its great content wise but yea it ruins it by making it MUCH harder (cost of ability points of all atributes increase 2x past 30 , 50 70, mage is unplayable)
>It's a numberless RPG >has HP, armor points, energy, ammunition, damage ranges, magical weapons, artifacts and upgrades
What did he mean by this? All it lacks is a leveling mechanic.
What I mean is that there is no game-y TTRPG trope trash but instead it made its homebrew set of rules. Of course you need numbers in a video game, maybe the word I used wasn't appropriate. I'll think about it.
The way I define atmosphere for myself is "extending the mood of the scene to the consumer". This is usually done with a combination of visuals, sounds, music and narrative, and cinematic trickery. Sometimes though, even the gameplay factors into it.
The Witcher 1 OP used as an example is actually a game where the gameplay also is part of the atmosphere. The game is about being a witcher, and being a witcher kind of sucks, and the world you live in really fricking sucks. It communicates all that really, really well.
On the other hand. making a shit tier atmosphere is easy. Just don't have any audio and have the visuals completely contradict what happens in the narrative.
What are some RPGs with a shit tier atmosphere? What exactly does that even mean to you guys?
notice how witcher 3 is good because of story and music quests, but it does not have good atmosphere
cyberpunk 2077 is shit tier atmosphere :
it does not feel much like cyberpunk,
only the center of the megacity looks like megacity so world building part is ass ,
music is good but only 20% and it does not give cyberpunk vibes "much dystopian degenerate future popmusic"
so the atmosphere is totally ass even tho the game is at least medicore
now lets check gothic 3 - the game is ass. because the combat , character development, city reputation system and last 20% of quests (barely any ending, no boss) is ASS
yet game have great atmosphere due to world building (cities) music and art design
>tramping through Old Vizima in the pouring rain >ominous dulcimer music playing >random hag calls out "You bring trouble!"
The Witcher has a denser atmosphere than fricking Jupiter.
>original world, mythology = atmosphere
>generic fantasy world with nothing interesting = no atmosphere
simple as that.
Atmosphere is 90% OST.
Completely wrong. Music plays a big part of it but it's nothing without other senses. Otherwise it'd be enough to just listen to the ost.
>it'd be enough to just listen to the ost
Yes.
No, it's not. The witcher 1 OST is nothing without the areas, dialogue, mood, setting, characters etc. I replay these games regularly.

Name one atmospheric game without a good OST?
>Name one atmospheric game without a good OST?
Game doesn't work. Never played it.
>without a good OST
I'd say 70%, enviroments and can make the difference too
Thats single most moronated definition of what "atmosphere" is Ive ever read.
Congratulations.
On that note, you dont even know what "generic fantasy" is, Reseteragay.

where is this screenshot from? one of the free modules with enhanced edition?
Yes, not Side Effects but the other one takes place in Kaer Morhen. Forgot its name
VtMB
VTMB, STALKER, what else, anything brooding really.
(me)
Ah yes, how did I forget, Deus Ex.
>STALKER
Why do people keep calling this an RPG?
It's a great game(s), but it's not an RPG.
But to answer OPs question Mass Effect 1
STALKER is garbage
It's a numberless RPG. One of the most impressive simulated worlds. Too advanced for its own good.
>numberless RPG
I'll accept immersive sim as a genre before I accept that.
On what authority, Black personhomosexual. Immersive is not a genre, it's a design philosophy. Dumb Black person.
Damn son, there's at least three layers of moronation in that post alone.
there's just two, Black person
So you admit to there being two layers of moronation in your post?
not me and i admit there's two, yes
Takes one to know one.

No, it's just not an RPG.
It has what has come to be know as "RPG elements" it's an open world first person shooter.
I am correct, you are wrong.
You forgot to put your >
Other than that, your on the money.
this. stalker is a shooter with rpg elements, similar to far cry, etc.
System Shock 2 (SS1 has great atmosphere too, but that is not an RPG)
Unironically Skyrim. One of the few reasons I play it. Thank God for Jeremy Soule.
Planet Escape: Tournament Edition
>much of city looks like a quirky garbage dump
>way too short ambient sound loops repeating in background
Yeah, no.
Morrowind
Ar Tonelico
Xenoblade Chronicles X
>the atmosphere of having half the screen covered in garbage
the Shadow Hearts series
daggerfall
Divine Divinity and Gothic 1-2
Night of the Raven ruins it for me, thankfully there's a mod that removes it from Gold version.
My god I love The Witcher 1
My favourite atmosphere ever
>tramping through Old Vizima in the pouring rain with ominous dulcimer music playing in the background
KINO.
>your mother sucks dwarf wiener
SMT Strange Journey
Baldur's Gate 3
Oblivion (unironically).
picrel is god tier atomosphere. id say deus ex and kotor 2 are god tier atmosphere too
Kotor2 is like one of the only rpgs I like
Might and Magic 6. You're now mentally listening to Moonlit Journey (aka frigid highlands theme).
Soundscape and everything that falls into graphics/art is way more important than soundtrack for good atmosphere.
t. always mute music
Oblivion
unironically
shit game
shit opinion
Good game
Shit comment
i didn't like the game but i have to admit the art is nice
Ashen
Pathologic 2
Phantom Crash
Phantom Dust
