It's the safe normalgay recommendation. Looks and sounds good, easygoing difficulty, and doesn't go overboard with the ASM. There are so many different types of hacks and people with different tastes that something like that is bound to appeal to most people.

i remember a series of super metroid hacks that were designed as an "arcade" game. same kinda idea. take an engine and its sprites and physics and then change the gameplay fundamentally

Not sure about the first one but Gankerorld 2 and 3 are filled with so much kaizoshit (and worse, janky kaizoshit that can and will kill you arbitrarily) that it hurts. The few regular levels like Blue FOErest and even very simple ones like My 84 Imoutos stand out so hard in this sea of shit it's not even funny.

Did you not play it? If you just want simple, regular levels, you'll prefer Gankerorld 1 then.
i still havent tried 3 yet but 1 is mostly just normal level design
2 is a lot more involved but nothing id call kaizo

Is it so much to ask for a Mario World rom hack to not be Kaizo autism and just a new vanilla Mario game with some new levels, custom music and tilesets?

theres definitely plenty of SMW hacks that arent literally designed to waste as much of your time as possible
I always gotta recommend the JUMP games. Mostly vanilla with some ASM for fun level gimmicks, difficulty that's challenging but fair (for the most part) and lots of content.
