It is, takes a while to get into it but it is worth it. The ost is great, they gave Serj Tankian the final boss music too

One of my favourite tracks here. Alissa has great voice and the final chorus where she just hams it with growling vocals is insane

Do any of you think it be possible to ever make a new brutal legend like video game? Like I'm not even asking for like a sequel, just like an absurdly metal hack and slash that relishes in nonsensical lore over the musical genre

I have no idea how much covers cost but In brutal legend I think those were the real deal.

            Anonymous

All the originals. Tim Schaefer was somehow super well respected and loved at that point so he was getting tons of cashflow and star power to make basically whatever he wanted.

And whatever he wanted turned out to be awful and they figured it out soon enough to cancel the final 1/3rd of the game. Schaefer, as was usual for every single thing he's ever touched, was hemorrhaging money and was grossly over budget and over schedule. It might have been better if they had gotten the chance to finish it, but cutting their losses and releasing what they already had was probably the only possible way it would have come out at all close to in the black.

            Anonymous

Nah they were all originals. It makes the Brutal Legend soundtrack one of the best of vidya soundtracks of all time.

I love the game for what it was, but they really should've just stuck to making a Zelda + hack & slash clone rather than experimenting with RTS elements and not finishing the game as a result. Darksiders 2 did it better.

            Anonymous

Guitar hero didn't last very long doing that. I think it wasn't very well received which is why every AAA game after ghIII had to have 0 covers.

              Anonymous

They were just able to find/record more songs by that point and didn't need to rely on cover versions.

It'd prolly work as an indie novelty, but nobody is really into metal the same way they were in the 00's.
Actually, nobody is into any music anymore. I mean, people went "Le so metal le rip and tear" over doom a couple years ago but nobody actually got into metal because of Doom. It's just the way things are, with people just getting very shallowly into an 'aesthetic', maybe listening to the first video that comes if you search 'le heavy metal to rip and tear to" which is half nudoom soundtrack and half the most entry level boomer metal before getting bored.

        Anonymous

Nudoom soundtrack is kinda the very definition of an aesthetic. It's not interesting to listen to on its own.

Doom2016's soundtrack should have been written by Slayer. Repentless is godlike for an album written by 60 year old men, meanwhile shitallica is praising gay reddit shit like Stranger Things

Good games release every month. Not having a banner all-timer year doesn't mean good doesn't come out, nor does the sorry state of most major publishers. I don't fall for the "2023 is the best year in a long time" meme but in terms of the breadth of notable releases it absolutely is big because all the COVID delays landed around now. Unless you're lamenting the death of specific IPs I don't see how almost anybody couldn't find new releases they enjoy.

We don't even have any Japanese metal games yet so the only way to get more heavy metal games is if Japan becomes interested in making them.

Till is a c**t yes, but honestly I find it hypocritical given other celebrities people still praise. I heard some stuff about David Bowie that put me off him but others seem to still love the guy. I also don't want to throw away a bunch of other music after some bandmates turned out to be fricked up.

Yeah they are great, I'm just saying Rammstein despite singing in a foreign language somehow made it to the west, as did kpop, but Loudness are amazing heavy metal and didn't. It just bothers me.

I need to find more good Japanese heavy metal that isn't just Loudness and Anthem. (Waggaki band are folk metal and okish).

Loudness have that 80s vibe, and it died once Kurt Kobain got famous in the early 90s. Cycle bawds from Hell are another victim. They were a cool all female metal band, and they were on the road to be famous in the early 90s, but shit happened in the industry and they were very unlucky.

                >qrd on Till?
some groupie landed some questionable allegations against Till during their recent tour

                >"a woman claimed that her drink was spiked during a Rammstein concert in Lithuania and was selected for an aftershow party, during which she was ushered into a small room underneath the stage for lead singer Till Lindemann. After making herself unavailable for sex, she claimed Lindemann reacted angrily and left. While emphasising that she was never assaulted, she believed there to be an "organised system of funnelling girls." Although Vilnius prosecutors found no evidence of drugging, her story amplified the band's "Row Zero" practice, where young women would be pre-selected on social media by casting director Alena Makeeva to stand in an exclusive area closest to the stage dubbed Row Zero and attend pre-show and after-show parties, during which Lindemann would request to have sex with fans in attendance. Further claims against Lindemann prompted an investigation by German police for sexual offences and the distribution of narcotics. In response, the band denied all claims of illegal behavior, fired Makeeva and halted the "Row Zero" afterparties"

You're crazy. It's a fine game if you like RTS games and use mnk, and knew it was half RTS going in. Yeah, it could've been a typical action game and scored better, but the RTS bit was fun. Just different.

how do I get better at the guitar? I've only been playing for more than 15 years now and I fricking suck. should I take lessons or can I git gud by doing some kind of esoteric japanese hand yoga or something?

Only true and honest answer: practice every day. Every. Single. Day. At least 30 minutes a day, without skipping a single day. It's the only way to get better. Find a scale that you like and sounds good to you and practice that on repeat. Improvising/coming up with your own stuff based on scales is also really good and can open many doors to you.

How do I start even learning the guitar?

Not sure if I need a teacher or can do it cheap with youtube. I also have no idea if I should look into music theory, because I hear people saying things liek A, G, etc. But I have no idea what those actual notes are when people talk about them, I just notice pitch changes and rythym/tempo.
Also what's the sound effect called where the guitar has a sort of hollow sound? Like the stuff you hear in Sisters of Mercy. I want to learn how to make that tone.

          Anonymous

Learn via youtube at your own pace. Power Chords are easy and don't take too long to learn. Learn those. Once you know those, you can write your own song. Advanced stuff like solos can come afterwards.

            starting is easy
            1. buy a guitar
            2. THAT ONE GUITAR FELT GOOD IN YOUR HANDS THAT ONE GUITAR MADE YOU UNDERSTAND
            3. learn tablature. there's plenty of resources online.
            4. try to play easy shit that every one learns aka black sabbath, or easy pop songs with a guitar riff or two in them like micheal jackson's beat it, etc.
            5. it's at this point you decide you want to get instruction or not. instruction always helps in everything that you want to do and improve at, so don't feel bad because le jimi hendrix was born a shredder with zero instruction lel. that's untrue, he was a career musician who spent the vast majority of his time playing the guitar alongside other career musicians who did nothing but play guitar, so in this way you could say he learned through aping others/osmosis
            >music theory
of course you should look into music theory. if you get an instructor he will tell you about this.
            >youtube
yeah there's lots of resources online but most of it is very generalized because of course it is. you'll likely get a better education and special attention from a seasoned player who gives you one on one instruction but at the same time there's also a lot of general knowledge you can learn from youtube videos.

Pick up your guitar, look up power chords. Start with those, they're super easy and you can play many popular songs with power chords only (most of the time in a half-assed way, but it will still sound like something). Once you got picking and finger positioning down, you should practice some scales, there are tons of different scales with different kinds of "moods" to them, to put it in a simple way. You can learn how to play without actually learning musical theory, each person has their own style of learning/playing.
BUT, if you really wanna do it right, you will need to find a teacher and study musical theory.

            Thanks.
            Just one thing.
How will I tune the guitar if I have zero idea what sounds right/wrong, oor if you need to tune it differently for different songs.

Does it also make any difference in choosing between accoustic and electric guitars? I know genres are a thing, but outside of that no differences?

                Anonymous

acoustic guitars aren't amplified so they're not really good for playing in a band or something. electric guitars in my opinion are more versatile. the main differences are that one is amplified and can use a variety of effects while the other typically isn't, though it's also true that some hollow body acoustic guitars can take amplifier input. electric guitars are also smaller so you can play them in more positions than acoustic which are typically played sitting down (again there are exceptions to everything I'm just saying generally).

in my opinion, get yourself a good electric guitar, something like an ESG, squire, ibanez or jackson. you an get an acoustic later if you want.

Just download a guitar tuner app in your phone, Boss has one of those I believe.

              Anonymous

Can buy a physical guitar tuner very cheap. If you use a DAW like Guitar Rig or Amplitude, they have built in tuners which work pretty well once you connect the guitar to the computer.

              Anonymous

Get an electric tuner/app for starting out, different songs will be in different tunings but the vast majority of songs will be in the same few common tunings

Best way is probably to take lessons. I learned by using an old application called PowerTab and just trying to play songs that I enjoyed. 19 years later and I'm still a hack who needs to take lessons to improve, but I'm definitely a competent guitar player.

Find a guitar teacher who will also teach you music theory including ear training, sight seeing, dictation, and solfege; courses usually found at a music school. If you can not find a guitar teacher who can teach solfege, find a music teacher who can, such as a choir teacher, voice teacher, etc

      >In music, solfege is a music education method used to teach aural skills, pitch and sight-reading of Western music. Solfege is a form of solmization, though the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Syllables are assigned to the notes of the scale and enable the musician to audiate, or mentally hear, the pitches of a piece of music being seen for the first time and then to sing them aloud.

I've noticed a lot of modern power metal bands have doubled down on nerd appeal by singing about video games and comic books. DragonForce has songs about Skyrim and Starship Troopers. Probably just newer bands being into nerdy shit in general. There was a band named Hexen at one point, and Dragonforce is named after the game on Sega Saturn. Personally if I was going to sing about game stuff in music it'd probably be the early Shin Megami Tensei games.

I know metal always had songs about fantasy properties and shit but it was never this in your face about it.

Power Metal was always heavily referential, but post-irony hit the genre like a truck and half the bands in it poke fun at the dumb shit and ham it up too much. Blind Guardian is the gold standard; making great music that takes itself seriously despite the fantastical premise, but knowing to take the piss sometimes when they do covers of Cruisin' USA and Mr. Sandman.

Powerwolf gets old after a few tracks, Sabaton's songwriting is wildly inconsistent and kind of a waste of Joakim's great voice, Beast in Black started out alright but their lean into more cyberpunk vibes has hurt them overall while Battle Beast got their shit together and put out their best album since Anton left last year.

There's a band that recently came out called Fellowship, and while their name and first single leaned way too obviously into being a LotR reference, I genuinely loved their debut album.

It also ditched most of if the original comic design aspects that could easily pass as heavy metal. If anything, it's more like The Crow movie. Type O Negative could easily fit in as well.

      [...]

Might as well post some of their album:

their vocalist draws all of their album covers but I genuinely agree that if they had more normal-looking and less anime album covers people would talk about them more. They're pretty much brutal melodeath with a similar appeal to bands like Sarpanitum and Lykathea Aflame

I've had this concept since I was a high schooler in 2010.
Would you guys play a rhythm action game with metal music (music mixes with other genres depending on bosses) and combat like DMC & KH2.
I made the art style and engine that renders 3D + infinite resolution vector based characters already but I need to finish my current game before I can really start on this next one.

Protagonist is a loser who gets manipulated into selling his soul to Satan then has to work for him while trying and failing to juggle his high school life. it's a sort of dark comedy.
