I thought I opened a tab on the Ganker catalog to start the thread but I realized after posting I noticed it was on Ganker instead and feel stupid.

I'm barely 'nostalgic' about racers because the single player campaign modes, that Ganker likes to praise, of most racers are largely trash and right now multiplayer racing is close to better than it's even been.

give takumi proper ways to win his races besides cheating or plot armor
in general I feel like the author had some sort of hateboner towards the idea of any of his characters having a succesful romantic interest with more contrived and absurd reasons to do a 180 on any build up between characters. I'd also add that Natsuki would have been fine, instead of replacing her with a female Takumi.

I think it was in a certain way. Both anime (initial d and wangan midnight) refer to Bōsōzokus that ran rampant during this era

The manga might not be translated at all, and only the anime has subtitles (though crude ones), along with one of the movies. Both adaptations only cover half of the series and the early arcs respectively.

I've barely watched this, but what is up with the girls being such trashy, accessible prostitutes in this? It's almost 'refreshing' for an anime to have the other sex be such bimbos, given how most anime has to show its girls being somehow 'pure', like they're actually appealling simply for shamelessly looking and acting so trashy, just in contrast to other shounen.

Actually, Avex, the company that compiled Super Eurobeat sponsored Initial D and it made Eurobeat super popular again.
Songs became more about cars after the First Stage anime. Notice how most of the stuff in 1st stage is just about romance and partying while 2nd stage hits it out with Grand Prix and Deja Vu.
Eurobeat is mainly made by italians so of course they sing about cars.

I totally thought the whole series was building up to a rematch between Takumi and Keisuke, or Takumi racing his dad. The mirror match with the random kid as the series finale was so anticlimactic instead.
Season 1 is a classic but damn this is really one of those series that goes downhill in quality seasons after seasons. Keisuke as the deuteragonist in Fourth Stage was cool though, he became a more compelling character than Takumi.
