I've only played the Game Gear iteration, but Jurassic Park is really good. It's easy but there are plenty of neat levels and you can switch among three weapons that have their own strengths.
Except being able to have a weapon and an item active at the same time. Forcing you to go into the menu when you want to switch to a tool for a puzzle or use a spell, and then back to the inventory to return to using the sword or axe.
Well, maybe you just haven't played something that clicked with you yet, it's a good system overall, what did you play on it exactly? Why were your experiences with it so bad?
The Genesis is fully backwards compatible, there's no reason to buy a standalone Master System if you already have a Genesis/MD. A $25 chinese flashcart will let you play nearly the entire MD and SMS library, or you can buy one of those modern Power Base Converter replacements (just get a flashcart). You could even buy a Genesis clone and a clone flashcart and have a full hardware rig for <$50 if you're starting from scratch. Pretty cool shit.
I'd get a master system, it's cool and looks bad ass as far as consoles go. The sms plays the my card games, it's kinda like a hucard, and the games aren't very expensive so you can try stuff you might not give a chance. The power base looks cool though and it'd be one less system to deal with sp there's that part of it to consider.
Worth noting though, a small amount of games with spaz out with a Mega Drive controller. You can't play Wonder Boy in Monster Land with one, for instance (even on a Mega Drive). The Master System D-pad is poor, but you'll need one to play certain MS games.
Converter works, if you're willing to pay up for one. Another option is to plain put Master System ROMs on a flash cart.

You're correct, I was going to say "almost fully backwards compatible" and should have. Pretty darn good as far as backwards compatibility goes, especially in that era. Genesis clones are a real bargain for that reason.
That'd depend on what sates you, wouldn't it? Personally I wouldn't settle for not having at least one setup that can do 3D and FM on original hardware.
I've still got my PAL one. My favourites were
1. Asterix
2. Alex Kidd in Miracle world, it was built in
3. Lemmings
4. Sonic
5. Casino Games
6. Cool Spot
I had others but I was too young to understand them
Ys: The Vanished Omen
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Shinobi
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
Psycho Fox
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Kenseiden
Power Strike
Golden Axe Warrior
R-Type
The Japanese Mark III can be had a bit cheaper, but games aren't compatible without an adapter, and I don't think anyone makes a Mark III flashcart, so you'd have to stick an SMS flash cart on an adapter and that would be real weird. SMS prices are general moronic at the moment, you might as well play on a Genesis like

Well, 99% backwards compatible.

If you want a real SMS and not just backwards compatibility, that would definitely do the trick for you. There is a "power base converter" replacement with the FM chip for use on a Genny/MD, but I don't know if anyone is still manufacturing them. FM chips are getting harder to source, and I'm not sure if any are still in production...
Cool, thank you. Real, I think I just love the aesthetics of the SMS, I grew up playing PSO and I always made my mag into a SMS, lol. I'm going to start hunting around and see what I can find.
Power Strike II is undoubtedly the best Master System game. Go ahead and try it, you will see that I am right. It has the best graphics, sound and gameplay. Feels and looks like a SNES game.
I never even knew the SMS existed until I got into emulation in the late 90s and didn't try it until like 2003. I've still only beaten a few games on it (Wonder Boy 3, both versions of Hokuto no Ken/Black Belt) but there's something about the system I find endearing. The aesthetic is kinda annoying what with the bright colors and high pitched music but it's grown on me and reminds me of really old arcades. Especially ones from the 80s when all the flashing graphics would reflect from each cabinet to the rest and the high pitched sound effects and music from each would clash with the rest creating unique overtones, all of this like a sort of Indra's net. I occasionally have these recurring dreams where I get lost somewhere in the city and end up in a mysterious labyrinthine arcade, and the best way I can describe the games is "SMS-esque".
Truly a demented post from a sick mind. It's a fun game and I would argue a must play for the master system but it absolutely pales in comparison to the NES games.
>what are your favorite games for master system?
I haven't played too many things on it so I'll just list everything in a sort of tier list with my thoughts.
>5 Stars
Lucky Dime Caper: My favorite Donald Duck video game after QuackShot.
Sonic 1: Simply a stellar 8-Bit port of a classic.
Sonic 2: Sadly gets a bad reputation because of the Game Gear version with its small resolution. >4 Stars
Deep Duck Trouble: A worthy follow up and almost as good as its predecessor.
Sonic Chaos: It's fine even thought it was too easy and the focus on ring collecting wasn't ideal.
TECMO World Cup '93: An 8-Bit soccer video game better than most 16-Bit ones out there. >3 Stars
World Cup Italia '90: A decent adaptation of the sport for this sort of hardware. >2 Stars
Sonic Blast: Worse than its predecessors and subpar overall. >1 Star
Spider-Man Return of the Sinister Six: Worse than the NES version in almost every way.
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin: Someone thought a single life and no continues was a fine idea.
When it comes to titles that were released both on the NES and Master System, would you say one of them usually had the upper hand over the other or was it a 50/50 thing? I wonder if there is any sort of consensus regarding this, since I recall playing some titles which were much better on the NES, while also playing some that were much better on the Master System, and that left me wondering if any of these cases were exceptions to a rule or not.
You dont loose armor and have hearts instead. It has different stages than the nes. There is a lot of slowdown. The jumping is worse imo. The last stage has ice floors for some reason.
>You dont loose armor and have hearts instead.
Sounds good >It has different stages than the nes.
Sounds good >There is a lot of slowdown.
This sucks >The jumping is worse imo.
This sucks >The last stage has ice floors for some reason.
This sucks
Well, sounds like there's a 50/50 chance of me preferring this over the NES version, I suppose I could give it a shot.
You need multiple playthroughs to see the proper ending too. Instead of armor drops you go into this store setting and pick upgrades. You have to get an all gold armor set and the holy weapon on the last stage to see the last boss. It's the most unusual port as they must have been going for the Wonderboy rpg audience.
The Wonder boy games
Land of Illusion
Psycho Fox
Alex Kidd
Double Dragon
Danan the Jungle Fighter
Most of the Sonic games
Taz-mania
Fantasy Zone II
Sagaia
Psycho Fox
Aliens 3
Lemmings
The Asterix Games
I see someone's a fellow fan of football, if you liked Master System FIFA, then I suggest taking a look at TECMO World Cup '93 and World Cup Italia '90 on it aswell, probably my favorite football adaptations on the console. TECMO World Cup '93 genuinely feels like it's 16-Bit sometimes, it's stellar considering the hardware it runs on. World Cup Italia '90 is a lot more basic, and the only way to score consistently is to pass sideways close to the goalkeeper, but besides that it plays simple and straight forward football, which is quite charming.
Ignore that anon, his mind is obsessed with troons. Both nes and master system are great. I wouldn't say either outshines the other other than master system having nicer graphics.
Asterix
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Sonic 1
Castle of Illusion
wonder boy 3
road rash
jurassic park
alex kidd
rescue mission
I've only played the Game Gear iteration, but Jurassic Park is really good. It's easy but there are plenty of neat levels and you can switch among three weapons that have their own strengths.
yep. idk how it compares to the megadrive version since i've never played that one
Better gameplay, but jp genesis is pure soul.
kenseiden
phantasy star
poseidon wars 3d (the best 8 bit music track ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pdLTR5CNeg)
Thank you for saying kenseiden, I always feel alone when I mention it.
I'll add my list- the ninja, zillion, chop lifter, out run and r type. I know 3 are ports but I enjoy them on sms.
Based Kenseiden fans.
I only just started playing it recently but it's really cool.
Golden Axe Warrior. Zelda killer.
Also SMS has the best version of Ys 1 imho.
>Also SMS has the best version of Ys 1 imho.
But that's not the TG16 version
Killer no
Probably the best clone game though
It is better than TLoZ in every possible way.
Except being able to have a weapon and an item active at the same time. Forcing you to go into the menu when you want to switch to a tool for a puzzle or use a spell, and then back to the inventory to return to using the sword or axe.
None.
It's shit
Well, maybe you just haven't played something that clicked with you yet, it's a good system overall, what did you play on it exactly? Why were your experiences with it so bad?
So is it worth getting a master system or is using the power base converter or whatever it's called enough to sate me

No, definitely don’t get the original unless you want to use one of the worst controllers ever
You can plug a Megadrive controller without modification
Worth noting though, a small amount of games with spaz out with a Mega Drive controller. You can't play Wonder Boy in Monster Land with one, for instance (even on a Mega Drive). The Master System D-pad is poor, but you'll need one to play certain MS games.

Shadow of the beast

I'm thinking about getting a master system but dont know much about the different models, can anyone share any knowledge?
Is there a "best" model or revision to get? I noticed the Japanese version has a 3D glasses port.

Let's say theoretically I did buy one, I saw the MK-2000 Japanese version has built in FM sound. It sounds like that may be the model worth going for.

The Ninja
Alex Kidd
Alex Kidd in Shinobi world

Ninja Gaiden on SMS is the definitive version.
Yeah, definitively easy.
it's not even the same game as the originals, it's not a port but a different game.

I really like ghouls n ghosts on the master system
How is it compared to the more popular NES version?
