yeah it's almost like salamander was rushed the frick out.
its unironically the closest thing to alien soldier on the pce. solid boss rush game with gorgeous sprite work
ai cho aniki was a great "final-gen" pce game too
Idk, schools were good but grocery stores are easier. Just depends i guess.
I like that series too, never tried the super famicom game. Also thanks for turning me on to this manga, sounds awesome.
Really? I've never heard or seen anyone talk bad about it before. Growing up it was a cult classic among Sega shooter fans. It's not the greatest thing in the world, but cool designs/art, good music, and challenging enough.
Honestly I think a lot of “this is le bad actually” that I’ve heard about it is a common trend among a lot of games, driven by 1. Boredom talking about the same set of games endlessly and 2. Obviously when you have the entire library at your fingertips you tend to hyper focus on the 8-10 out of 10s, but there’s nothing wrong with a perfectly good 6-7 that has charming qualities or things (you) personally really connect with or enjoy. I feel like people have lost the ability to enjoy good or medium-good retro games if that makes sense. I get it though, time is limited and we blink and we’re 70 or whatever.
>Growing up it was a cult classic among Sega shooter fans
Maybe if you grow up smoking ass hairs. It got very mediocre reviews at the time and just didn't stand out among the many great shooters on the system. Not every rightfully forgotten game is a "cult classic". Stop drinking the hidden gem cool aid.
Any parodius but the msx one, gradius gaiden and v, darius gaiden and g-darius.
Thunderforce v is a personal favourite as well but it is a tad too easy.
Parodius (series)

Galaga '88
Yars' Revenge
Gradius (series)
Lifeforce (NES)
Tempest
Tempest 2000
Turmoil

XEXEX
TG-16 Star Soldier trilogy
almost every single Compile shmup with very few exceptions
Older list, but still pretty relevant. I found out about 19xx and like that a lot, along with one of the Aleste games on the PC Engine. The one with three orb weapons that can be used as bombs.
Outta the ones in your picture Radiant Silvergun is the only one I'm pretty good at. Managed to snag a 1cc of that one. The one I'm best at is Zeroranger but it's not retro. Broke 1mil in that one. I need to give Batsugun a serious chance, seems dope.
Played this as a kid, the second I saw it got re-released back on steam I bought it.
I suck at it. Apparently the original creator has been working on a remake of it for years now, slowly piece by piece.
Raptor Call of the Shadows, i think it was apogee. that one and Major Stryker were the two i played most after commander keen, duke nukem and jazz jackrabbit.
Now i want to download Descent, Mechwarrior and Terminal Velocity again.
>I suck at it.
i am genuinely confused.
this is one of the most piss easy vertical shooters to ever exist. it's actually even easier than tyrian.
you can run the same sector as many times as you want for money.
you can buy any equipment you need.
you can upgrade your shields to soak more damage, giving yourself like 5 healthbars or something insane.
you can get enough money to buy weapons that trivialize the game completely like the twin laser or weapons that make it so you don't even have to aim like the autoturret / laser turret.
the game throws weapons at you - you can actually beat it by buying NO equipment, just using weapons you find in the levels. for example you can get air to air missiles and air to ground missiles in the first few levels.
i am genuinely confused as to how you can suck at it. i beat this when i was 4 or 5. i played it on the family 486 in 1995.
it even has difficulty settings for you. maybe set it to easy?
it was much much much much easier than the other vertical shooters i had like major stryker and flying tigers.
Since 1988 it's been 'Life Force" for me. That boxart blew my 8yr old mind at the time. I still remember what kid in 2nd grade had the game and what his living room was like. Hey Doug!
Danmaku Unlimited 2, but that's too new for this board.
Gradius would probably be my top choice for an older shmup. It's always a fun time with Gradius, even when picking up Gradius Advance/Galaxies or just one off a random console. By comparison, most other similar games from the same time frame were so punishing after a death that you might as well only have one life in the game.
Dragon Spirit NES does stand out as having a lot of nostalgia for me, although it's certainly not the best option.

>I want to try more SNES and Turbografx-16 shmups. What are the best ones to start with?
Soldier Blade and Blazing Lasers on TG16, if you want CD quality stuff try Densetsu Sapphire and Lords of Thunder.
Frankly there's a frick-ton more shmups on TG16/PC Engine than Super NES too many to name here, just have fun exploring the library.
Blazing Lasers is one of the most boring shmups in existence holy shit. If you want a good PCE shmup play something like Sapphire or Nexzr or Soldier Blade or Gate of Thunder
It's similar, but actually good. The hard mode totally remixes and arranges the game if you want additional challenge.
Blazing Lasers is just so fricking slow and boring with the most moronic nonsensical weapon/upgrade system I've ever seen in a shmup. And all the secret extends/bomb trivialize the game. I much prefer Soldier Blade's more intuitive and balanced system where each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses and has its own unique bomb to go with it.
Favorite 19XX game?
I have a hard tie between 1943 Kai and 19XX.
1944 by a mile but I think that's Raizing/Toaplan and Capcom just published it? I'm not really sure, it's hard to find information about its development.
So I've been playing G-Darius HD and I feel like the slowdown is similar if not exactly the same as the PS1 version. I mean, it IS a smoother experience as PS1 tends to have a small stutter when loading the next area at the mid-stage diverging points, but that's about it. People always used to say that the arcade version didn't have slowdown, or at least not as much I guess. Was that always just MAME shitters talking shit?
G Darius is the only shooter I've bothered to clear. I love that game. Super underrated. The music and the ambiance just puts you in the fricking zone by the final boss. Transcendental experience for me, and I don't really into shooters as much as I'd like to.
I LOVE the idea of garegga but it's just way too oppressing, even that kamui chick has a tough time beating it sometimes and I'm probably never going to be that disciplined.
Metal black is sick but I haven't really dumped the time into it.
I loved raiden on the ps1 as a kid, the music is total fire, but that game is fricking brutal too. Another one that just doesn't feel possible to clear without autistic levels of dedication.
Legendary wings on the nes was cool to me as a kid but I could never get the w on that either.
I'm just not that good at shooters for some reason.
>nobody has even mentioned mine
I guess it's maybe not that special compared to games that came later but it holds a special memory for me where when my family went on vacation one time, there was this hotel we were staying in that unironically had an arcade adjacent to a swimming pool. I got out of the pool, saw this really cool arcade game, and begged my dad for a few dollars so I could try to beat it. That game was Phelios. I thought it was so cool that it repeatedly changed directions and camera views. It took me a while to find it again as an adult because I guess it wasn't a very popular shmup, but I still think it's very cool.
DoDonPachi. It's the only shmup series I've ever seriously played though. Other games have just never clicked with me for some reason, it's the perfect balance of speed and chaos for me. Other games are too slow and don't hold my interest or are too much and also don't hold my interest. It's a genre I want to get into more though.
I see that you are a CHAD CAVE and I respect you. Meanwhile the majority on this thread are too concerned with cherry-picking (on an anonymous image board) their games to look like tough guys [kek] or hiding behind the shield of 'I'm a classic gamer and I have a reputation. homosexuals
You don't even have any clears, shut the frick up. CAVE is the most normalhomosexual entry-level slop in the genre.
Axelay
Thunderforce 3-4
Gate of Thunder
MUSHA
Lords of Thunder
Blazing Lasers/Lords/Thunderforce/MUSHA is like ninth circle of slow, boring, unbalanced console shmup hell. I really hate those games and never got the appeal.
Are you the autistic autofire homosexual whos in every thread about shmups and autofire? I'm only asking because you're just as insufferable and that's exactly how he talks.
if you are a veteran of the shmup genre or a new player you're going to appreciate this dude's channel, reviews, opinions and tips & tricks too
And yes he's reasonably biased towards good shmups, danmaku and not old ones with outdated design choices!
I don't know when I found this guy's channel, but it was in some shmup thread, and I've subscribed and watched probably 20-25 hours of his content.
Very impressed with The Electric Underground. Love how he goes into such specific details in the video you linked.
I wish I was good enough to play shmups. The closest I ever got was eventually after 14 years after recieving it finally beating SolarStriker for the origianl grey Game Boy.
The trifecta of fake interest. Battle Garegga is at least a decent game with a unique playstyle, but the other two are just pure trash praised almost solely by posers outside the genre.
Japs are very passive aggressive, and will praise something just to be respectful, doesn't really mean anything.
There are orders of magnitude more basedfacing posers who don't even play or understand shmups who praise Ikaruga as le heckin' masterpiece compared to actual active players.

>There are orders of magnitude more basedfacing posers who don't even play or understand shmups who praise Ikaruga as le heckin' masterpiece compared to actual active players.
Poser opinions don't matter specially when superplayers and devs like Ikeda praised Ikaruga.
Ikaruga is one of the best shmups ever made
Of course and the only argument against it is "but normies with no skill like it!!!"
>arcade clears
You mean did I beat those 3? Yes I did.
What is an arcade clear anyway? I play on emulator not with arcade stick it hardware, and a shmup is cleared when I see the credits roll not when some autistic self imposed challenge is done
Euroshmups are universally shit
Soldier x 2 was just okay.
Euroshmups do not belong on any top list, not even top 20 or even top 50 considering what's available in the genre
Most euroshmups are bad, but some like Jamestown+, Sine Mora, Sky Force Reloaded, and Housemarque's games are great. Doujin games are far worse though, as they are just soulless CAVEslop clones; at least euroshmups at least have original ideas and innovate.
>sine mora, sky force good >ketsui, dangun feveron, mushi, dodonpachi BAD!
guaranteed you have no scores or legit 1cc
you are a moronic non player similar in IQ to mariax
>those games I've never played that are actually original and unique and push the genre forward bad >these shitty zero effort CAVEslop clones good

Shitty gimicks that add nothing but detract from fundamentals is what euroshmups always do and why they are universally shit, specially the ones you listed

Funny enough I got into the genre with euroshmups then realized how damn awful they are
Sorry you have such shit taste but it's obvious you cope with easy shmups and avoid danmaku and hard classic japanese shmups

>Sorry you have such shit taste but it's obvious you cope with easy shmups and avoid danmaku and hard classic japanese shmups
Most of those are much more difficult than many classic arcade shmups. Sine Mora Arcade Insane or even Hard, Jamestown+ on Judgement or even Divine, Sky Force Reloaded B1-B3 Nightmare all medals, Housemarque games are notoriously difficult, having basically a second loop (Hero difficulty) only after completing the brutally hard Master difficulty. Again, you have zero perspective because you don't play these games and have no arcade clears, but these are easily a high 30s or low 40s on the difficulty list. These are some of the absolute hardest games out there.

And how many of those "10/10 quality arcade shmups" have you actually 1cc'ed or scored?
there are many quality 7-9/10 games on console. Just cause they aren't arcade level, doesn't mean they aren't worth playing.

19XX is a blast.
>nobody has even mentioned mine
I guess it's maybe not that special compared to games that came later but it holds a special memory for me where when my family went on vacation one time, there was this hotel we were staying in that unironically had an arcade adjacent to a swimming pool. I got out of the pool, saw this really cool arcade game, and begged my dad for a few dollars so I could try to beat it. That game was Phelios. I thought it was so cool that it repeatedly changed directions and camera views. It took me a while to find it again as an adult because I guess it wasn't a very popular shmup, but I still think it's very cool.
Even has a very cool poster
DoDonPachi. It's the only shmup series I've ever seriously played though. Other games have just never clicked with me for some reason, it's the perfect balance of speed and chaos for me. Other games are too slow and don't hold my interest or are too much and also don't hold my interest. It's a genre I want to get into more though.
Play other CAVE games to start. Dangun Feveron in particular is very similar to DoDonPachi, and it’s great
Just added it to my list anon. Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the suggestion!
Blazing Lasers/Lords/Thunderforce/MUSHA is like ninth circle of slow, boring, unbalanced console shmup hell. I really hate those games and never got the appeal.
Thunder Force is good but yeah I fricking hate Compile. Technically impressive, but boring.
>You don't even have any clears
Are you the autistic autofire homosexual whos in every thread about shmups and autofire? I'm only asking because you're just as insufferable and that's exactly how he talks.
99% of shmup players use autofire so that doesn't really narrow it down
>CAVE is the most normalhomosexual entry-level slop
Let me go to McDonald's and ask the lady at the counter if she knows what Dodonpachi is kek
If the cashier is trans they will
>t normalhomosexual entry-level slop
r-type final 2
Anyone know if the PS3 port of Ketsui is any good? Particularly interested to know how much input lag it has.
Just play the M2 port lel
its runs like a frame faster and a little liss slowdown besides that to a good port
Axelay
Thunderforce 3-4
Gate of Thunder
MUSHA
Lords of Thunder
1. Blazing Lasers
2. Thunderforce 2
3. Lightening Force
4. Gate of Thunder
5. Phalanx
6. M.U.S.H.A
7. Robo Aleste
8.Truxton
Einhander
Severely underrated post.
I don't know when I found this guy's channel, but it was in some shmup thread, and I've subscribed and watched probably 20-25 hours of his content.
Very impressed with The Electric Underground. Love how he goes into such specific details in the video you linked.
Remember that synth guy who claimed to 2 all cc the Strikers games and then ran away or attacked anyone who asked for replays
jajajajaja
Why people's do that in shmups so much
It's a genre that tends to shatter overinflated egos. The #1 requirement to enjoy shmups is to be humble.
I have fond memories of playing through Life Force with my cousin.
better than the arcade version, actually.
Why?
the arcade version is jank and may actually be unfinished. they rushed it out between Gradius 1 and 2.
The genesis ones because of how creative and ambitious they are for that time
Those made it tie with snes imo
charts ones I own; if i owned it lords of thunder pc engine would replace sagaia
Finally got the 1cc on 1.5 after so many hours of practice
Hell yeah bro, congrats!
Thanks, aiming for a DDP 1cc now
if you are a veteran of the shmup genre or a new player you're going to appreciate this dude's channel, reviews, opinions and tips & tricks too
And yes he's reasonably biased towards good shmups, danmaku and not old ones with outdated design choices!
daioujou really does look like shit unless you apply a shader or play on a real CRT
mark plz
Mark quit shilling your channel here, man. Everybody on this board who likes shmups knows about you
yeah, love this dude's fighting games' reviews ha
he's also good at character action games ha, weird that sometimes he dabbles into shmups though ha
Gundam, as understood by Naxat/Compile. No, they don't just have a colony drop, they try to drop the fricking moon.
ikaruga
gradius v
don't like radiant silvergun at all
I wish I was good enough to play shmups. The closest I ever got was eventually after 14 years after recieving it finally beating SolarStriker for the origianl grey Game Boy.
It's not about being good it's just memorizing levels
Just by looking at this I can tell you don't REALLY like Gradius lol
>hitler rape groyper
go back to twitter beaner
>troonhou
lmfao
Lost my phoenix on the second to.the last level of legendary wings. Almost 1 cced it on my second try after I posted that.
I finally beat knightmare(msx). am I just bad at shmups or is this game really hard?
Didnt find gradius 1 or 2 (nes) nearly as annoying but maybe those are on the easy side for this genre
Batsugun is good
Genesis, saturn and ps1 have some greats
Didn't like the snes ones other than a few. Not sure why they're just not as fun. Genesis are the more impressive ones
MUSHA, Tyrian 2000, and a bunch of Flash shooters i forgot about.
Battle Garegga
Ikaruga
Radiant Silvergun
You hear about those three a lot because they haven't been surpassed yet and probably never will
The trifecta of fake interest. Battle Garegga is at least a decent game with a unique playstyle, but the other two are just pure trash praised almost solely by posers outside the genre.
Other way around newbie, you'll find posers attacking them while the good players praise them
which is why you are a shitter with zero arcade clears.
Anything from Trashure is peak entry-level poser, and doubly so for their shmups.
Ikeda praised Ikaruga as a work of genius.
Who are you? What have you done?
Japs are very passive aggressive, and will praise something just to be respectful, doesn't really mean anything.
There are orders of magnitude more basedfacing posers who don't even play or understand shmups who praise Ikaruga as le heckin' masterpiece compared to actual active players.
>There are orders of magnitude more basedfacing posers who don't even play or understand shmups who praise Ikaruga as le heckin' masterpiece compared to actual active players.
Poser opinions don't matter specially when superplayers and devs like Ikeda praised Ikaruga.
Of course and the only argument against it is "but normies with no skill like it!!!"
>arcade clears
You mean did I beat those 3? Yes I did.
What is an arcade clear anyway? I play on emulator not with arcade stick it hardware, and a shmup is cleared when I see the credits roll not when some autistic self imposed challenge is done
kys credit feeding shitter moron
Ikaruga is one of the best shmups ever made
You realize how laughable this sounds when you haven't even cleared a single game
The overlooked ones are best
Wings of War
Sagaia
Ranger X
Truxton (more recognized)
Biohazard
Subterrania
Fire Shark
They're all on genesis there's at least 20 greats on their no one talks about ps1 has them too (donpachi) except they're Japan imports only
?si=Hf6v6Oa7_z6YZrTX
Insane list
Still 5x better than mariax list
rent free. you clearly haven't played many of those games, because the first Soldner-X is the euroshmup of euroshmups.
Doujin games are far worse though, as they are just soulless CAVEslop clones; at least euroshmups at least have original ideas and innovate.
lol
All those are trash though
>those games I've never played that are actually original and unique and push the genre forward bad
>these shitty zero effort CAVEslop clones good
kek, just leave until you get a single arcade clear you fricking shitters
Shitty gimicks that add nothing but detract from fundamentals is what euroshmups always do and why they are universally shit, specially the ones you listed
>Never played them
Funny enough I got into the genre with euroshmups then realized how damn awful they are
Sorry you have such shit taste but it's obvious you cope with easy shmups and avoid danmaku and hard classic japanese shmups
>shitty gimmicks
>meanwhile sucks off Ketsui, Garegga, Ikaruga lmao
>Funny enough I got into the genre with euroshmups then realized how damn awful they are
and you still have zero clears lmao
You are clueless because you lack hands on experience with the genre. Back to collecting fake achieves on steam zoomer
I literally have nearly 100 no miss arcade clears. Meanwhile you have zero arcade clears.
moronic fricking fake interest shitter.
>sine mora, sky force good
>ketsui, dangun feveron, mushi, dodonpachi BAD!
guaranteed you have no scores or legit 1cc
you are a moronic non player similar in IQ to mariax
i have a really dumb question
what's the best way to play mame roms nowadays?
arcade64, cuts out all the pinball, majhong, and slot machine games
thanks anons, but i found out that my stick is broken too
frick me
mame
Why is Gradius I the most fun in the series
its fast paced, short levels, easier than the others?
Id say 2 or 3 are the best
2 arcade runs at a lower frame rate though and it pisses me off
No, they both run at 60.6Hz
The actual game feels like it runs at half of that, though. Maybe it's MAME/FBN itself, who knows.
Go play them back to back and you'll see what I mean. Even the PCE port feels better to play.
more like shit 'em ups, amirite?
Like how you boomers that don't like video games show up here and shit it up
Centipede
Super Mario Kart
