this. the problem is when the game is balanced around that entire gimmick. it was cooler as some unintended high level tech developed by players and not forced on the player. by making it 'mandatory' you're providing a very specific and, more importantly, *singular* experience, which is fine so long as it isn't the entirety of the experience. there was no variance in the type of gameplay, it was very much a 'do it our way or you won't get far' mentality. anons here will say 'get gud' to flex their little egos as if Eternal is considered some high level fps, but the reality is they don't view it from a gameplay perspective and how to properly balance a game. Hugo and Marty were just huffin their own shit and clearly lost sight of this as well.
I could just imagine romero or carmack programming in "the monkey bars" mechanic and thinking "What the frick am I doing" and throwing it out completely
Ironically the story, clearly in doom 2016 you’re meant to be the man who’s betrayed by the demons and who’s son is turned into the icon of sin. It explains the vile hatred you have for them. I liked the ambiguity of the world. The role of heaven and how instead of sending an army angels they just empowered one man do the job. It wasn’t in your face and was deep but simple in the best way.
Then in the sequel it’s far to marvel esc. The writing is cringey, I dislike the depiction of heaven and making doomguy the same dude from the originals I think was a bad choice. Clearly they went with “oh look how cool everything is connected.” But I think it just came out cringey. and, the dlc tried to do too many “Gotcha” moments that weren’t built up and came off as lazy. “Oh the devil is actually god” it wasn’t needed. This game is literally about hell trying to take over I don’t need heaven and god to be the bad guys as well.

Doom 2016 nailed the atmosphere, but there were too many collectibles. I play Doom to kill monsters, not for a collectathon.
Doom Eternal decided to double down on the collectathon and Marvelize itself. Just felt worse than 2016 in every aspect.
If the devs have any sense at all (they don't), the next Doom will be a focused experience that specializes in excellent combat and exploration, without the need to take yourself out of the action and check your minimap every 30 seconds to see if you missed a collectable (it won't)

What I meant to say by "overpowered movement" is that, speaking as a person who champiuons 7th generation tacticool shooters, the level design has absoliutely no effect on the encounter design because your movement cancels out the level design.
Good games but they didn't feel like doom to me. Doom always felt like an action puzzle adventure to me more than a shooter. NuDoom is a lot more fun if you compare it to Quake but the movement is lackluster and the arena battles are missing the point.

Then check out the Arcane Dimensions mod because honestly it's the best retro FPS experience out there and its completely free if you own Quake. It takes the idea of dark worlds of evil magic from the main game and actually does cool shit with it.
Standouts include Foggy Bogbottom, a crumbling fortress town in a swamp, The Realm of Enceladus, a temple on the top of a snowy mountain and Tears of the False God which is a ruin floating in a clear sky and is absolutely beautiful.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that I'm quicksaving a LOT on Doom 2 because its full of unfair shit where they will randomly open door to a 1000 enemies (it sometimes happened in doom 1, but it wasnt this dense, and Doom 1 doesnt have that fricking cacodemon that vomits lost souls), or a TP will just lead to a room full of demons right behind you, or sometimes you just fall of a cliff and there is literally no way to go back up so youre doomed. I would quicksave like twice in each level on Doom 1, maybe thrice, but now I do it constantly.
The middle section is a low point, but it picks back up again in Hell.
Eternal's over-reliance on Glory Kills sucks hard. I never finished it because I hate having to perform it on almost every enemy just to get some ammo.
Hard disagree. I completed 2016 on Ultra Violence and Nightmare and never had an issue with ammo, never used the Chainsaw once to refill. Eternal is super staunchy giving you any Dakka if you don't utilize Glory Kills.
You should replay 2016 again, I would agree if it was your first blind playthrough but even on my initial run I had no issue no I realized I can skip Glory Kills.
However for fairness sake, I will give Eternal another try.

Overall, I think nudoom is a respectable duology that deserves its name. Fun, no-nonsense shooters that I personally don't tire of. However, I'm unsure whether they'll stand the test of time like Doom I and II did - those games are like chess now.

Like I said, it's a natural evolution of every aspect that *everyone* praised about 2016: faster, harder, more intense etc. If you think it went overboard on any of those aspects that's alright, but it's not necessarily a regression in terms of game design, no more than chess is a regression from checkers.

I'll assume you mean the platforming between combat arenas (Eternal and 2016 are pretty similar when it comes to overall arena design). This is not a complaint that I ever understood (except from the aesthetic standpoint, but I've already addressed that). The platforming is minimal, easy, and quick; I last played eternal around 8 or 9 months ago and I can recall most arenas perfectly, but I can't remember a single platforming section. The only reasonable critique (which I agree with) against the platforming is that it goes against nudoom's aesthetic.

Repedative boring levels. Only several levels. Only the plasma rifle looks good and fires well. Aiming issues. Lag. Downgrades. Too high res. No ads. It's a massive step back from rage and a giant dissapointment. Cartoonish. Eternal is unplayably stupid.
2016 had the right idea. Eternal went into a completely different direction contrary to the design philosophy of 2016 that's divisive and for good reason.
Eternal has a lot of necessary inputs, and it sucks when you're on a controller. 2016 could get by with one because it had fewer necessary actions and there was less reason to switch your weapons often.

this. the problem is when the game is balanced around that entire gimmick. it was cooler as some unintended high level tech developed by players and not forced on the player. by making it 'mandatory' you're providing a very specific and, more importantly, *singular* experience, which is fine so long as it isn't the entirety of the experience. there was no variance in the type of gameplay, it was very much a 'do it our way or you won't get far' mentality. anons here will say 'get gud' to flex their little egos as if Eternal is considered some high level fps, but the reality is they don't view it from a gameplay perspective and how to properly balance a game. Hugo and Marty were just huffin their own shit and clearly lost sight of this as well.

Ironically the story, clearly in doom 2016 you’re meant to be the man who’s betrayed by the demons and who’s son is turned into the icon of sin. It explains the vile hatred you have for them. I liked the ambiguity of the world. The role of heaven and how instead of sending an army angels they just empowered one man do the job. It wasn’t in your face and was deep but simple in the best way.
Then in the sequel it’s far to marvel esc. The writing is cringey, I dislike the depiction of heaven and making doomguy the same dude from the originals I think was a bad choice. Clearly they went with “oh look how cool everything is connected.” But I think it just came out cringey. and, the dlc tried to do too many “Gotcha” moments that weren’t built up and came off as lazy. “Oh the devil is actually god” it wasn’t needed. This game is literally about hell trying to take over I don’t need heaven and god to be the bad guys as well.

Doom 2016 nailed the atmosphere, but there were too many collectibles. I play Doom to kill monsters, not for a collectathon.
Doom Eternal decided to double down on the collectathon and Marvelize itself. Just felt worse than 2016 in every aspect.
If the devs have any sense at all (they don't), the next Doom will be a focused experience that specializes in excellent combat and exploration, without the need to take yourself out of the action and check your minimap every 30 seconds to see if you missed a collectable (it won't)

I have to say, Doom 1 was a blast, but I'm currently like 17 levels into Doom 2 and many were an absolute chore. Why do people think Doom 2 is better again? The new shotgun and enemies (which are cool) dont make up for the shitty levels.

As other anons have said yes the original has much tighter level design. 2 is more of a cash grab, that's just what game design was like back then, they had to churn stuff out quickly. Then check out the Arcane Dimensions mod because honestly it's the best retro FPS experience out there and its completely free if you own Quake. It takes the idea of dark worlds of evil magic from the main game and actually does cool shit with it.
Standouts include Foggy Bogbottom, a crumbling fortress town in a swamp, The Realm of Enceladus, a temple on the top of a snowy mountain and Tears of the False God which is a ruin floating in a clear sky and is absolutely beautiful.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that I'm quicksaving a LOT on Doom 2 because its full of unfair shit where they will randomly open door to a 1000 enemies (it sometimes happened in doom 1, but it wasnt this dense, and Doom 1 doesnt have that fricking cacodemon that vomits lost souls), or a TP will just lead to a room full of demons right behind you, or sometimes you just fall of a cliff and there is literally no way to go back up so youre doomed. I would quicksave like twice in each level on Doom 1, maybe thrice, but now I do it constantly.

2016 is a great Painkiller game.
Eternal's over-reliance on Glory Kills sucks hard. I never finished it because I hate having to perform it on almost every enemy just to get some ammo.
Both games are equally reliant on cutscene kills. 2016 arguably moreso because higher difficulties nerf pickups hard.
Hard disagree. I completed 2016 on Ultra Violence and Nightmare and never had an issue with ammo, never used the Chainsaw once to refill. Eternal is super staunchy giving you any Dakka if you don't utilize Glory Kills.
2016 on nightmare has you glory killing constantly because health pickups don't give you anything and glory killing is the only way to get it back.
You chainsaw once or twice per fight in DE but you have ways besides actual glory kills to get your health and armor back now.
You also get less health from glory killing in 2016 on higher difficulties
You get less health from everything, meaning you need to explore every possible option when Imps are taking 40HP chunks out of you with a fastball.
You should replay 2016 again, I would agree if it was your first blind playthrough but even on my initial run I had no issue no I realized I can skip Glory Kills.
However for fairness sake, I will give Eternal another try.

Eternal is tough on its first playthrough, but you barely need to chainsaw once you know how to play it and what to expect out of arenas and fights.

I miss Arcade Mode so much. That and UNM skipping the tutorial at the start of the game are the only things I prefer from 2016. Horde Mode sucks.

Eternal indisputably has better gameplay, it's the most natural development for every mechanic in the previous game as well as fixing the dominant strategy problem in 2016.
Overall, I think nudoom is a respectable duology that deserves its name. Fun, no-nonsense shooters that I personally don't tire of. However, I'm unsure whether they'll stand the test of time like Doom I and II did - those games are like chess now.

I think Doom 3 did it well. The story was campy as frick but the lore was actually interesting if you decided to read into it and was completely optional.

Like I said, it's a natural evolution of every aspect that *everyone* praised about 2016: faster, harder, more intense etc. If you think it went overboard on any of those aspects that's alright, but it's not necessarily a regression in terms of game design, no more than chess is a regression from checkers.

This is not a complaint that I ever understood (except from the aesthetic standpoint, but I've already addressed that). The platforming is minimal, easy, and quick; I last played eternal around 8 or 9 months ago and I can recall most arenas perfectly, but I can't remember a single platforming section. The only reasonable critique (which I agree with) against the platforming is that it goes against nudoom's aesthetic.
