I'm trying to think of what to suggest to a person I know absolutely nothing about. I can't think of anything that might not disappoint someone.
what an insecure homosexual
Eurogays with shit taste as usual.
it took a while for SotN to took off and become a hit, people back then were crazy for anything 3d even if played like shit
>MUH 3D
game journalists were always homosexuals, today it's movie games trying to be "art"
>sound 6
This is what a lot of Ganker hot takes will sound like 20 years later.
Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3
Mega Man X4 and X5
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Has been my Top 5 since I was a kid basically. Though as an adult I also really enjoy Einhander, Omega Boost, Chocobo Racing, Harmful Park, and Cotton 100%.
I still need to play this game and Chronicles. Looks way more fun than the early Castlevanias.
>that actually told up
ayo fr fr them PS1 games be dusty af boomer shit ong
Crash Team Racing
I don't have any. I'm just here to lurk until ten or so Anons post their lists so I can mass-reply with "all shit"
Legend of the Dragoon. I am replaying it now and it is pretty gud
Too restrictive with its combat system for my taste, even if additions are nice.
You are wrong
There are too many to list but here's 20 or so of the most well known ones that are good:
Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (Jap version with translation patch)
Ape Escape
Brave Fencer Musashi
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Colony Wars
Dragon Quest VII
Final Fantasy VII
Front Mission 3
Ghost in the Shell
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Legend of Legaia
Parasite Eve
R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill
Tomba!
Vagrant Story
Wild Arms
Wipeout XL
Xenogears (first disc is worth playing)
There are so many obscure underrated games in the 5th generation, it'd take all day to list them all.
These are awful
>that actually still hold up?
Practically every JRPG. A time when internet wasn't forced on players and they didn't have to suffer through competitive every fricking thing, like nowadays.
Lmfao no
Breath of Fire 3/4
BRICKSTONE
Einhander
Elemental Gearbolt
That's a light gun shooter, is it still playable on emu?
If you mean that you can play it with a regular controller, then yes, you can. I did a regular playthrough with joystick and, while suboptimal, its doable.
I'm sure if you tinker enough with the emulator you could get something better.
Resident Evil 1-3
Silent Hill
Metal Gear Solid
Parasite Eve
Spyro 1-3
Crash Bandicoot 1-3
>Resident Evil 1-3
the series objectively didn't get good until 4
4 was no good. I hated it
R-Type Delta.
Based game coming through
better than
>ff tactics
>front mission
>shining force
>fire emblem
>tactics ogre
yeah I'm thinking based
I want to recommend Vagrant Story but frick me it's difficult
>two morons fighting and the third one watching
outside of pure 2d in most cases you have to have some appreciation for jank in the moment to moment playing of the game.
Gran Turismo 2 is still great and has enough unique tracks and cars missing from the rest of the series to be worth playing. (for that matter the original SSR11 only appears in the first game)
For me its Laguna Seca raceway and Red Rock Valley speedway.
The GT2 version of Laguna is a bit jank, albeit not nearly CART World Series, SportsCar GT, Newman Haas Racing, TOCA World Touring Cars, or even Superbike 2000 jank.
It's shocking how much dept Gran Turismo 2 has. Heck it's graphics are light years compared to most other PS1 racing games.
I think Ridge Racer 4 is up there for the graphics but in terms of content it beats the vast majority of racing games, if you don't count senseless roaming open world games especially.
Dino Crisis 2
>graphics remained timeless
>meanwhile the ff games aged like shit
Kings field 1 and 2 ntsc
I've been going back and forth between playing on my PSP and mednafen I can't tell which is the correct speed I think they both run it too fast but also slow down randomly
I also have an issue with sotn and circles
The damn oval moon makes me want to jump off a cliff
Check out Shadow Tower too if you aren't aware. Much better visually and same team. I had all 3 back in the day and they're all hard af.
The only difficulty I've had is how lost I am lol
I tried King's Field 1 and that game plays like absolute shit. I don't know how you can stand the fricking glacial turning speed.
Armored Core Project Phantasma
Brave Fencer Musashi
Bushido Blade
Castlevania: SotN
Einhander
Elemental Gearbolt (requires lightgun to play properly)
Gradius Gaiden
Mr. Driller
R-Type Delta
Raiden DX
Trap Gunner
I have a fondness for PS1 3D shooters, everything looks warped like you're having a nightmare and there's always this eerie since of loneliness, every 3D PS1 game is a horror game
Sense*
Lifeforce Tenka is a good one.
Nothing's ever come close.
Final fantasy 9
Crash Bandicoot 2
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy Tactics
Saga Frontier 2
Valkyrie Profile
All Crash Bandicoots, except the first one
Pretty much every RPG
Marvel vs Capcom
Metal Slug X
Those play like modern games. I can recommend you 20 more that are great, but a zoomie brain would find them outdated
Ff7
Ff9
Armored core games
Syphon filter 1 2,3
Mgs1
Megaman legends 1,2
Tron Bonne
Xenogears
Tekken 3
Spyro 1 2 3
Vagrant story
Ctr
Tomba 1 2
Valkyrie profile
Fft
Smackdown 2
Twisted metal 2
Also add to my list
R type delta
Einhander
Bushido blade 1 2
Samurai shodown games
King of fighters games
>Tomba!
This. It's an amazing game and still looks great, especially if you emulate it on a handheld
Geppy - X
Persona 2 Innocent Sin
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics
Valkyrie Profile
Breath of Fire IV
Resident Evil 2
Metal Gear Solid
Elemental Gearbolt
Lunar Eternal Blue Complete
Soul Blade
Mega Man Legends
Mega Man Legends II
Tobal No. 1
Tomba 1 and 2
Spyro
Bushido Blade 1 and 2
Bloody Roar
Chocobo's Dungeon
Dragon's Valor
Threads of Fate
Alundra
GTA 1 and 2
Driver
Tomb Raider
Croc
Star Ocean 2
Megaman X4
Grandia
Chrono Cross
Legacy of Kain
Spiderman
Tony Hawk
Parappa
Um Jammer Lammy
Underrated.

>no oddworld
cmon homies
Oddworld already felt clunky when it released, I can't imagine it getting better 20+ years later
honestly feels less clunky than new n tasty and soulstorm
>PS1 games that actually still hold up
Ace combat 2
Rage Racer
Front Mission 3
Metal Gear Solid
Resident evil 2
Ghost in the shell
r type Delta
Tekken 3
Doom
Spyro
Medievil 1 & 2 (some of the most criminally underrated games of all time)
Legend of Mana
Azure Dreams
Crash Bandicoot + every PS1 spinoff especially Crash Team Racing
Gauntlet Legends
Final Fantasy
Klonoa
Tekken 3
Metal Gear Solid (although I must admit the GC port Twin Snakes is the best way to play MGS1)
>only mention of azure dreams in the thread
You are my homie
>although I must admit the GC port Twin Snakes is the best way to play MGS1
Delusional nintentroony
Otacon is already emanciated when he pisses himself talking about anime. Why would you compound that? Why add comedy when it's meant to be a serious scene?
Because Twin Snakes is comedic on purpose, that is why you should play the original before even touching it since its only good as fanservice.
*emasculated
isnt it closer to what kojima actually wanted though?
Probably Silicon Knight's propaganda, because in latter games he uses footage from the original.
I personally liked Twin Snakes, tho.
>footage from the original.
well who wants to go through licensing with nintendo? you can't use videos of their products without strict permission
I would believe it belongs more to Konami than Nintendo, but who knows?
Meant for
>open thread
>ctrl + f suikoden
>'Phrase not found'
It goes without saying that JRPGs hol' up
Blitz is great but the ps1 version is the worst one by far
medievil and overboard
I enjoyed Syphon Filter 1 and 2 when I played them recently if you like doing cool James Bond stuff. Its controls are weird but kind of satisfying when you get the hang of it.
Also, Silent Hill is still great
I'm always surprised to see people suggest Tomba 2, the first Tomba is one of my favorite gen 5 games but Tomba 2 is weird in a bad way and they ruined just about everything that made the first unique
Opinions on the best selling games?
Normie core. The best ones are:
>Tekken 3
>Oddworld
>Silent Hill
I refuse to reply seriously to a zoomer that thinks games "age" or stop "holding up"
It was the last gen where best sellers generally meant a good to great game, aside from shit like Harry Potter or Tomb Raider obviously.
Tomb Raider 1-3 are great, 4 is shit but it's not on there
All snoozefests, third person action platformers in general are a boring as frick genre, not surpisingly they are mostly made in the west because they go well with cinematic walking segments.
Gross. Even a zoomer can appreciate 3 at least
There are absolutely games that were only good in their era but are trash now because the transition to 3D gaming was so haggard. The first Tomb Raider for example is practically unplayable compared to the PS2 games.
If they are trash now they were trash even before that time since the game is identical
>The first Tomb Raider for example is practically unplayable compared to the PS2 games
The Tomb Raider PS2 games are even worse, what the frick are you talking about
legends and anniversary are the only good games in the franchise
all bangers except for Harry Potter, WWF shovelware and I don't know what the Derby game is
Horse racing. Smackdown games (particularly 2) are good, War Zone is okay.
>Smackdown and Smackdown 2 came out 8 months apart
This clarifies a lot for me.
>WWF shovelware
Black please these games were filled to the brim with soul. The PS1 versions of Smackdown for example are the only games with a hardcore mode that let you pummel c**ts with shopping carts. Not to mention having a fight in a bar where you could glass and twack each other pool cues and billiard balls. Something that the later games toned down on when it came to its arena and weapon section.
let me guess, you need it more?
GT and FF used to rule the world ;-;
Gran Turismo was just so ridiculously good. I remember finding on the early internet some tuning numbers like the camber angles and shit for Carollas and just throwing all of my in-game money into a Carolla and spending dozens of hours driving those. My buddy was all about the Imprezas, if I remember well. I tried finding that tuning info years later but it was just lost in the mists of time.
Look at how Japanese that list is though, we need to return to the warm bosom of the yellow man to repair our hobby.
Western shit was already taking over, sure it was of higher quality compared to what we have now but when they got the money is when the japanese couldn't keep up with the expenses and higher requirements for graphic engines, that's what really collapsed the industry.
Japan was ahead since the 80's, and Euro-American devs had to start from nothing. It wasn't until the 90's when they started to really have impact. PS2 era is still Japan dominated. Japan didn't bottom out until the PS3 era for a few reasons.
Japs moved to mobile gaming away from PC/consloles. the PS3 was a mess to program for and the Xbox based western devs had a huge advantage for that reason.
Japan has seriously bounced back though.
>PS2 era is still Japan dominated
By the end of it it was clear Japan couldn't keep up with costs, Konami and Square especially collapsed around that time, Japan excels at making quick, fast, stylish, creative, exciting games not slow, generic "drip feeds of morphine" like the west does, what happens is that Japan then tried to follow what the west did, in fact they mostly they still do that today since they need the western market to keep afloat, that's why now AAA japanese devs make games that are barely distinguishable from western titles, sounds, looks and even play similiarly.
I got gt2 first and raced with my beginner banged up Nissan for days, ramming the other cars. Then I got gt1, spent months doing licenses only. When I came back to gt2 my Nissan seemed like a rocket. Now I refuse to drive automatics thanks to that.
>Tekken 3 at 5th place
Not surprising since it was the best Tekken game up until 5.
>no FIFA/Madden
I guess it's true, normies hadn't invaded vidya by then, I thought they were always there, just weren't being pandered to.
Trust me they were there but the difference that there were multiple series of sport games that were all selling well, meaning that Fifa for example wouldn't have been near the top, especially considering how awful Fifa games were at the time compared to ISS Pro.
That's a movie player. Wrong board
Weird tone but pixel always hold up
frogger
Any game backed up by the Man, the Myth, the Legend, Keiji Inafune and his visionary genius.
Genius charismatic creator created GTA before GTA. Why doesn't Rockstar give him the credit he deserves?
> "It didn't sell anywhere as well as I had anticipated," Inafune said. "I was really confident about the game during its development, considering how fun the game was. It was really something new, something that we thought would be unfortunate if gamers didn't play. And we released it, and oops!" The designer then let loose a hearty laugh.
>"It was a bit too early for its days. Ever since then, people started saying that 'Inafune's ideas are seven or eight years too early.' It was a sandbox style of game, kind of like Grand Theft Auto. One has Yakuzas and the other has robots, but it's kind of like the same. If we made it at the present time in modern quality, I believe that it would have sold a lot better."

Back when competition was still present in the game industry, good times
every genre was packed
You don't need to tell me, i already know that it was the greatest console, not the best gen though, that would be the 4th
Everything about that review is awful and shouldn't be used as a proof of anything aside from how fads and the desire to fit in cloud people's judgement
>Clock Tower 2 twice
Good job dumbass.
based moron
He is right though, Clock Tower 2 appears twice, one is the japanese cover and the one with the scissorman is the euro/us cover.
God damn, I always forget how gigantic the PS1 library was. You could easily play that console for the rest of your life and still discover shit. N64 kiddies on suicide watch.
crash bandicoot 1,2,3
crash team racing
spyro 1,2,3
medievil
ape escape
syphon filter 3
mega man x4
mega man legends
castlevania symphony of the night
persona 2
wipeout
gran turismo 2
marvel vs capcom
puzzle bobble 4
Recommend me some vehicular combat and mecha games, preferably in urban settings, I need them for research purposes. So far I have BattleTanx and GITS.
Tomb Raider 1 is still the most atmospheric game i know, with a sense of wonder like no other and an awesome OST. you'll need some time to get accustomed to the gameplay if you're a zoomer but it's worth it. the level design is also impressive for its time.
in 2d games, umihara kawase shun is a gem
I've been playing through the old Tomb Raiders with widescreen patches. TR1 holds up well, TR2 introduces some improvements along with some flaws, and TR3 loses the magic in a game that's simply tedious for most of its duration. I finished TR3, but I don't think it was worth the effort.
Bugs Bunny Lost in Time is still kind of a good game. Not super perfect but playing through is fun.
Assault Retribution fun to play through once.
Megaman Legends maybe if you never tried it but has a windows version too (though the controller support is non existant, you need to use third party software to bind keyboard keys to controller buttons)
Ape Escape. Can't wait until my child is old enough to play it. maybe 4 more years
There’s a ton of PS1 games I’d rather play over anything modern, but in terms of holding up for a younger audience? That’s a bit more difficult.
>Metal Gear Solid
>Tekken 3
>Street Fighter Alpha 3
>JoJo’s Venture
>Time Crisis and Point Blank (assuming you have a lightgun and CRT)
>Castlevania SoTN
>Gran Turismo 2
>Ridge Racer Type 4
>Wipeout 2097
>Alundra
>Parappa the Rapper
>Um Jammer Lammy
Spyro, Crash, Resident Evil
>Tekken 1 - 3
>Syphon Filter 1 - 3
>Treasures of the Deep
>Tomba
>GT1 and 2
>GTA and GTA2
>Dune 2000
>X-COM
>Warzone 2100
>G-Police
>Twisted Metal World Tour
Silent Hill
sell it for n64
>sell it for a console with no games
Grim
Running High
Fighting Force
I remember playing AC3 as kid an dliking it, despite the fact that it was a gutted EU version with no story. The last mission was inexplicably weird, though.
Colony Wars holds up pretty damn well
