What are your thoughts about One Winged Angel lads?

What are your thoughts about One Winged Angel lads? This song was so legendary on forums from the late 90s/2000s and was treated like the most epic boss music of all time.

It was my favorite vidya song at one point, and although that changed I still think it's an extremely good song that deserves the praise. Every time I think "maybe OWA is overrated" I just listen to the part that sounds like Satan's carnival, that ends in an extremely bombastic and dramatic fashion before instantly transitioning into a little cheery jig. For some reason I just love that whole stretch. Especially when it syncs with Supernova

If One Winged Angel is in your top ten boss themes, you've played less than ten RPGs.

It has meme status but as an actual piece of music I don’t feel much. And I like FF7. If I think of a good FF boss theme, I think of Seymour’s theme, Jecht’s theme, and hell even the boss theme from FF3.

This too. SMT has some fricking sick battle tracks. Also unironically a big fan of the Evergrace OST

One of those posts an underaged person thinks is clever due to their relative inexperience with post-cringe cringing. Come back to view replies and after humiliating yourself several thousand times youll start to get the spider sense. Some people are smart enough to learn by simulating the humiliation of others in their head as they lurk without accumulating "I'm a huge moron" trauma, but some people are huge morons and need the trauma (repetitive and ingrained) to learn.

Haha, trauma means literally you can't 'let go' and forcefully need to re-experience the event.
I do agree though that gay you replied to is a monkey.

If anything, the more VGM I listen to, the more I appreciate Uematsu's work, and One-Winged Angel is definitely his best final battle theme. It's like Dancing Mad but with all the fat trimmed, it's just pure bombastic climactic goodness distilled into its perfect form.

Uematsu has the bangers, but Sugiyama is the lowkey beast. Yes, I'm intentionally speaking like a Black person, why do you ask?

        >Seifer and Squall are just SPARRING.
        >WHO GIVES A FRICK.
Ah yes the "FF8 story is bad because I don't understand it" gang. Seifer and Squall are R/U's two knights who battle over whether she turns evil or good. Their rivalry encapsulates the theme of the entire game. Or it's completely meaningless and random if you're part of the "too stupid to understand Nojima's writing" gang.

Wasn't there a theory that Seifer was the destined protagonist but Squall was an anomaly that ruined everything for him or something like that?

Aerith's Theme is the best by far, and the way it's used is just beautiful. I think if not for that theme playing at that scene, nobody would give a frick that some vidya character died. Many FF characters died before, nobody gave a frick

Hate to say it, but I don't get the hype. The title is cool, and it's cool that is has vocals in latin, and they say the character's name in the song, but otherwise I don't think it's a great song.

One Winged Angel is the kind of track that gets elevated by your own emotional investment in the game.

Like you can listen to it on its own knowing nothing about FF7 and go "yeah that's pretty good I guess", but you really don't get the full picture unless you've actually had the chance to play FF7 blind, not knowing what to expect, only to end up being hit by that at the ultimate showdown at the end of the game that everything has been building up to. Like your own pure emotional investment in the game is coming through in your excitement in the moment, and it transfers to your appreciation of the music. Your appreciation of One Winged Angel is just your appreciation of FF7 as a whole.

You kind of lose some of that appreciation when you go into a game having already been told something like "Dude Sepphiroth is badass One Winged Angel is the GOAT" because in that case you're already going in with your expectations set.

I think a lot of the really standout final boss themes are like that.

Also this cover of One Winged Angel is probably my favourite cover of anything ever.

i mean yea vidya music is made for vidya
most people dont go out of their way to listen to random flim scores on their own either. same reason. its only half the picture
i suppose FF is a bit different as the music, unlike most background music, draws a LOT of attention to itself. but the guys kind of a one-man progrock band, so it at least holds up well in isolation from the actual game

personally one of my favorite little vidya ditties has nothing to do with big sweeping arrangements in JRPGs (although chrono cross is spectacular in that regard)
its this stupid little song from the genwun pokemon mansion

      what the actual frick masuda?

It was amazing at the time, but it was simply surpassed by endgame themes in later games. If you really must have your bombast and choir, Heart of Chaos is superior. Uematsu himself also bettered it with Roar of the Departed Souls.

Personally, I'm more a fan of Maybe I'm a Lion from VIII and The Darkness of Eternity from IX. Both are way more fun than the boilerplate ominous Latin chanting.

The most underrated Final Fantasy track I think, Final Fantasy VIII perfected the main theme of the series and nobody really took much notice.

I think One Winged Angel is a bit too firetrucky and bombastic. With the build up of the game, it coming at the apotheosis makes it fit. However, like Sephiroth, it's been overused too many times and shoved where it doesn't fit. Like in Kingdom Hearts, like in Advent Children. It's kinda ruined it in a sense through overexposure.

      Anonymous

There's been so many variations on that theme across games and just concert CDs that people don't pay much attention to that anymore. The vocal songs stole the show in FF8-9-10 anyway

Weird how they never had strong vocal themes since, except for this hugely underrated one.

You have plenty of chances to get the last real item. Just reload a save if you fail again and you MIGHT want to look up a guide for when these become available and when they go away. If you progress too far in the story, the total amount of Fort Condor battles you can do will go down. One of them is very quick, once Cloud wakes up after the battle with Bottomswell under Junon, you have to go back to Fort Condor before you try to get to the upper plate five minutes later. And you have to do it as Cloud solo on the travel back on the world map

It's awesome, but only the original version of the song. The original is perfect, really nails the arrogance of Sephiroth, and it always lines up perfectly with Supernova. Every single fricking remix of it is trash and tries to make it more epic which ruins it.
