The devs of Eternal really don't care about Doom as much as they want you to believe. All the fanservice and pandering is shallow, soulless drivel that any random Joe could come up with with about a day's worth of experience with the series.

I'm not talking about iD stuff in particular. Check the chain. I was replying to an anon talking about how the people on Eternal don't actually give a shit. I made a joke then explained the thing that I lament. And then I explained it more clearly for the moron who thought I was saying "aaaa reference bad!!!"
I don't doubt some of Eternal's callbacks were marketing checkboxes given its scope as a project, but I was saying I hate how this is a thing across media and some creators lean to hard on it instead of going with their gut.

For some reason I always found the eyes darting back and forth to be extremely profoundly cool.
I can't explain it.
Obviously it makes sense for him to be alert, constantly checking for threats considering some are armed, invisible, have projectiles.
Still, there's just something about the way it's done.
Honestly I guess it's the idea that even though he's being extremely vigilant, he's clearly not afraid. Normally if you were in a scenario that warranted looking around constantly for something jumping out at you, you'd be nervous and it would show.
But he's completely collected, stoic even. He knows he's in an extreme amount of danger (especially becaus there are numerous dead marines and zombified marines everywhere), so he's checking because that's the smart thing to do, but he doesn't seem afraid or even concerned.
He's completely unperturbed
That coupled with the extremely please and malicious smile when picking up a new weapon really make his character great, despite almost no other characterization.
