Lyse landing a hit on Elidibus is more impressive than Palalymo trying to emulate Louisoix but not even surviving the sealing spell while Louis did a cool Goku vs Piccolo moment after without missing a beat. The entire ending of ARR was essentially putting all the characters on a bus and seeing who was worth bringing back and who was worth erasing. Papalymo was instant chopping block material along with minfilia. They just tried to give him a noble send off. What he did, felt pointless, but the point was to just remove him, really.

At the rate at which the tanks have been homogenised and powercrept, how would a new tank design even fit into this increasingly rigid mold that streamers and their followers have set to make sure no tank does anything better than Warrior? How can we have fun and rewarding new tanks when all of them need to be strictly worse adaptations of the most basic, streamer's favourite tank?
The only tank that does anything different from Warrior is Paladin And all it does is protect an individual better than War can thanks to cover, but it rarely comes into play. Dark knight and Gnb used to be the dps tanks because they brought less defensive utility to the party. With that advantage removed, are they just going to turn into Warrior clones now? Because as a tank main i'm a little frustrated with the way the tanks are currently designed.

Warrior ranks 1# or 2# for damage in almost all fights.
What did Gunbreaker and Dark knight bring? Damage. To make up for their weaker defensives and utility. But apparently we can't even have that. So what's the point of these tanks? Are they going to turn them even more into Warrior clones in the next expansion just to be safe? What would be the point of a new tank? What will be the point of any complexity? Where would a new tank fit in, in a role where 1 job, and the simplest one at that, does everything and is the best at everything? I'm going over every piece of content right now, and i find it hard to justify playing anything over Warrior. Normal content, extremes, savage or even ultimates. Warrior is the best solution to every problem. Why can't different tanks be good at different things? Was Warrior doing 3% less damage really that big of an issue when it already has so much going? I Just don't really see the point

Puppeteer as a Tank Job where the Puppet is the real tank and you instead focus on casting spells that turn damage taken into damage sent out or mitigation through a gauge while collecting stickers from your puppets attacks to spend on a big puppet attack. It doesn't fill a position or contribute to anything beyond bringing back and fleshing out pet tanks

I remember I heard so much shit about her that I expected her to be terrible, but she was honestly just ok, not too bad, not too good. That being said, some of the stuff that people have made involving her makes me regret she is basically a noncharacter now, since maybe she'd get a little bit more if she was a character we see regularly.

I think FFXIV dev team should learn more from WoW on how to design tanks and make them feel and play uniquely than each other. So far WoW has:
- A tank that relies on and increases both the "Armor" and "Block" values. Basically the tankist of tanks
- A tank with healing and supportive spells that is our FFXIV Paladin equivalent. Perfect for all situations
- A tank that turns the damage received into DoTs that are delayed or negated. Great for massive pulls.
- A self-healing tank that is our FFXIV Warrior equivalent
If we simply analyze WoW's tanks' design, then we can find that they share a common but obvious theme. "Survival" but in a different way for different situations.
We could follow a similar mindset when designing and reworking how tanks function here in XIV. For example;
Paladin: A tank with support spells such as group mitigation, group shield, with some healing spells that could turn him into a demi-healer when the situation demands it. Perfect when the healers aren't very reliable or not there but isn't good enough to replace them. Damage is slightly below moderate and armor is slightly above moderate (We can't forget it's the only tank with a protective shield, so armor value being moderate or less is ridiculous)
Warrior: The self-healing tank we all know and love, but with less than moderate damage and armor.
Dark knight: The tank dps. High dps but moderate armor (Dark knights wear full metal clad armors, so they should have more armor value than warriors RPG-wise). Great pick for people who want to feel the weight of the greatsword but on the account of being the least tank to be able to survive due to the focus on dps. Basically hardcore tank
Gunbreaker: Parry tank. Second highest tank dps but the least with armor value. However, gunbreaker rely on high parry rate to avoid getting damaged in the first
Tanks aren't really a tanking problem, that's honestly only a third of the issues with XIV.
The rest are both supporting classes(aka the rest of the party) and enemies.
How do XIV tanks, let alone the entire cast interact with enemies? The short answer is: They don't.
And that's the fundamental difference between XIV and other games, you CAN quite effortlessly take XIV's content and put in any other game, it works, because XIV's content doesn't need XIV's jobs to work. While you absolutely can't put WoW/GW2/Destiny 2/ESO's content into XIV without making changes to the jobs.
Talking about tanks is a minuscule part of the real problem with XIV.
This is just the result of designing combat in general around tight dps checks instead of mechanics and creativity.
Not really, you can have tight dps checks as part of mechanics in a game, for example, Nioh 2 rewards you super hard if you know when to actually unload your high DPS moves. But nothing really restricts you to only unload those if you have staggered the boss.
IF anything it's quite the opposite, the combat is a set of 'stand and let thing resolve' mechanics instead of, you know, actual combat.
This is also further exacerbated by the fact jobs aren't actual classes but glorified rotations. People don't think they copied WoW but it's more like what WoW used to be than what it is right now. You can separate every rotation from it's job and you have, quite literally nothing.
This goes for enemies as well.

Yea, everything is on a set timeline. HP pushes are skipping phases are impossible to do now with how jobs have been homogenized to follow the 2min rotation.
Every raid this expac has been designed around the dumbed down "2min meta", so the dev's can design "harder" fights. However this doesn't really work/be fun when every other mech is a hard body check or designed to kill people/give 90% damage down's. Furthermore contributing to designing encounters around tight dps checks instead of creativity.
TOP is guilty of having its dps checks too tight, but I did appreciate having to move around damage cds as DRK between phases. Like in P3 -> P4, I would save Living Shadow and mana for P4 if P3 wasn't dying fast enough and vice-versa.

But year, trio mechs need to go away. The ones in P2 of DSR are very nice imo, but having 1/2 of the fight be 30secs of downtime between trios is fricking awful. I hope who designed TOP never does designs another raid in the game.

Everything is a personal choice. No one's layout will work for you. You need to come up with a philosophy that works for you.
Personally, I put the most used buttons on XHB1, less used buttons on the WXHB, buttons that are rarely used but you need in emergencies on the Double triggers, GCDs on the face buttons, and oGCDs on the d-pad.
I then bend or break those rules depending on the job/role. For example: for healers, oGCD heals are also on the face buttons and GCD heals on WXHB face buttons. The left trigger XHB is all dmg related buttons.
BTW, I suggest getting a PS layout controller for this game. You will make heavy use of the dpad, so asymmetrical button layouts will suck.

eventually it'll become muscle memory as you acclimate to how you've grouped up your skills on your hotbars
Place anything you might need to regularly use while moving on your face buttons since you'll have to take your finger off the stick to hit anything on the d-pad.
You can set one or more hotbars to be universal so it's shared across all jobs. This is where I put things like mounts or emotes.
Experiment a lot, move shit around until it feels comfortable, then try and keep the same-ish layout across that entire role. For example, all my 1>2>3 combos are square>circle>cross, all my tank defensives are left>up>right, etc.
Can't really think of anything else off the top of my head.

I understand that they wanted to try to make Yda a non-joke character and actually give her a story, but retconning that she was secretly someone else this whole time was probably the absolute worst way for them to try to do that. It for some time takes you completely out of the story and takes awhile to adjust because it's so unnatural in how it all happens.

You're forgetting that the 1.0 scenes with the Circle of Knowing members took place 10 years prior, now 15 years ago. And we saw Yda in those scenes as well. So even in 1.0 she wasn't mid 20s, she had to have been in her 30s.

Not really. They went to Gridania by airship but got shot down by Garlean cannons because they flew too close to the Ala Mhigan border, and the crash landing in the forest pissed off the Elementals so they had to do a cleansing ceremony.
They then came to learn that Wood Wailers were mysteriously vanishing all over the place, and the seedseers told everyone that they were sinning and the Elementals were taking them away.
As it turns out, the seedseers were actually sending the Wailers over the border to assist the resistance, and then lying to the citizens because they were aware that no Gridanian would ever want to send their loved ones to die helping Mhiggers.

WoL was actually interacting with both "Yda"s due to how their Echo functioned in 1.0 as their Visions were actually a sort of time travel that let them interact with past events but 'not really' instead of just being the 2.0 non-interactive flashback version. So they met real Yda in their Echo flashbacks and the fake Yda in current day events. The story writers may not have envisioned that being the case for the Yda character back then but that's where it ended up going in HW/SB.
That reminded me of the fact that as the story goes on the game kind of forgets the fact your WoL may not have been THE WoL who was in 1.0 but other people's characters actually were. It never goes into "oh, you were actually there but just have amnesia that you never recovered from. :^)" as even recent Rising events and such will still make distinctions over whether your character was participating in 1.0 story beats or not.
Also that scene in ARR with Cid's goggles makes 0 sense for a character who wasn't imported from 1.0 still (don't even know if it makes sense if they were).

That single scene was written with the 1.0 rules most likely because in the rush to get ARR finished a lot of stuff was compartmentalized and they just needed to get the product out.
the echo still works the way it used to (misija uses it to convince the bozjan handmaiden queen into violence and iirc also exploring cid's memories just before bozja) and venat uses a very similar application to track where meteion went in elpis but "can walk into a specific version of the past" is a bizarrely specific power and banri oda testifies that they really didn't know what they were gonna do with it since nothing was written for the long-term game until after yoshida stepped on

The fact they weren't planning on anything but the immediate now in 1.0 makes me wonder how they were planning on upkeeping the world and story (or lack thereof) in the future. Gaius has a collection of masks from supposed kills but I don't know how he could have outright killed one with just his gunblade and no aether of his own. We aren't fully done with the Ancients yet.

The entire concept of the ascians also seemed to change because no acknowledgement is ever made of the lower tier ascians after ARR despite them being important to the early plot. They just get offscreened by Gaius and we never learn about them.

BG3 blows it so far out the water, even as a more temporary non-MMO story, that going back to FF14, even with knowlege it's an MMO and trying to approach it as an MMO, feels completely empty.

RDM and SAM get unique extras because they're part of the actual weapon. SAM's katana has to mesh into the scabbard and RDM's focus has to link onto the end of the sword to make a staff. Pictomancer's palette is not part of the brush.

Actually under the hood NIN, MNK, MCH, RDM, and AST all utilize the off hand slot. If you use anamnesis or glamourer on NIN or MNK you can change your other hand to another weapon.

Yeah, I know. But the point is that they're using two of the same weapon.
The reason it's a problem for MCH for example is because your fanny pack is literally the same default look no matter what weapon you use. It's a generic, static part of playing the job.
The equivalent would be if you got NIN daggers to start with where the off-hand dagger is the same model as the main-hand dagger, then every other NIN weapon you get past that still uses the first off-hand dagger model regardless of your main-hand dagger.
All that set aside, it would be nice to be offered the option of glamming dual wield weapons separately.
