I like fan translations because they give dekinais a chance to play good games that companies won't shell out to translate, like the second Ace Attorney Investigations. Some of them rival or even surpass official translations in quality.
Machine translations are annoying though, I would rather have access to the raw Japanese and spend extra time looking up the kanji I don't know than be subjected to a stilted translation that loses the nuance of the Japanese writing.

I don't mind MTL for like, personal use. using tools like the translator toolkit for games or google lens/deepl for manga for your own use is fine. but when you upload that shit and label it as a "translation" that's when it becomes a problem

Yeah, MTL sucks for different reasons but It's still fine as supplementary material if you're trying to learn JP. If someone used it and later edited the MTL to sound better to someone whose native language is English that's fine to me compared to just uploading the raw translation.

companies only use machine translation because they are either lazy as frick to hire anyone that is fluent in said language or they are just making a low-effort dlsite game to make a quick buck. Mtl is garbage, I agree, but only garbage games get mtl translation, it's usually just porn games that get mtl. That shit was never going to get a proper tl anyways.

The machine translation is unironically probably more faithful and genuine than whatever localization a human being (who's getting paid) can come up with. I wouldn't have this line of thought at all if it hasn't been proven time and time again that English localizers insert their own weird bullshit, remove lines, or change an original line completely because they simply didn't like it and thought it was weird.

The only good and unique take/localization I've ever liked was in a porn game where the gyaru girl getting fricked in the ass said "Yabaiiii~" and it got translated as "Fuuuuuck~".

I only read chinkshit but check out Female General and Eldest Princess. The problem with fan (also official video game/anime) translations is good translators get paid more to do important translating stuff for companies. Everything else is chump change so chump translators. The good fan ones are almost always pros in training, native chink/nip/asiatic+fluent in english, or a group of dedicated fans. I don't see it from nips but I've seen a lot of native chink/asiatics doing decent English translations of webnovels.

Shit or get off the pot. You can't expect people to wait forever, at a certain point fans are going to take efforts into their own hands. Not their fault that the publisher didn't think it was worth localizing in a timely manner.

      Anonymous

Maybe people should consider simply learning the language instead of just complaining if they're going to have to wait. Don't go for the 'but I work 900 hours a week!' excuse either because no one gives a shit: if it costs you nothing and you have even an hour of free time in your day then it's something that you can get done. Shit or get off the pot indeed.

As if. that ship has sailed. if you weren't passion to learn Japanese in the early days you are most likely gonna end up another twitter harpy complaining that a simple thing was replaced from the original text.

          Anonymous

The ship named "the ship has sailed" has been sailing away for the past decade if not more. Just 15 years ago you had people saying "why bother? it's all going to be in English anyway! look, they say breakfast instead of whatever they should be saying!" But things didn't work out that way and now the demand for Japanese shit is far higher than the supply. Now, it is possible that this scenario will become real in, say, 50 years, since there already are Japanese companies out there that can get simultaneous worldwide releases. And maybe all visual novels will die, and all the cool phones games will be consolidated under like two publishers who have the money to waste them on translations. But odds are you won't be as much into Japanese shit in 50 years as you are now, so you have to start looking at doing things that make sense in the moment, or in the short term plan.
As for your second point: just don't use Twitter. And don't use this website either to be honest. The amount of huge translation-related threads that get started with Xitter bait or bait compiled by someone from Xitter is obnoxious, and I'm one of the morons bumping them. You can't get baited if you just maintain inner cool.

        Anonymous

This isn't really an argument of any kind. It's just a twist on "I'd like to see you do better!". I can't. Fortunately, I can appreciate the work of someone who has the passion and skill that I don't if I'm fortunate enough that this passion and skill is directed toward working on something I'm also interested in. And if that interest isn't there? That's where machine translation comes in. In a perfect world I'd of course be playing a version crafted by a professional to be as true to the original, but if the game is good enough I'm just gonna have to settle for the next best option.

Yeah, except your average Weeboe will be filling in the blanks based on what another Weeboe told him. This is why anime TL's been plagued by so much shit for so long, like excessive notes or unnecessary omissions. If whatever romcom shit you watched told you that 'anata' means 'dear' and we didn't translate it because it's too deep of a word to be tainted by the English devilspeak, you'd shit yourself if you ever had to confront the other, more prominent meaning of that word. MTL is fine if you're just curious what something in japanese says and you want to get the gist of it, but it's not good enough for an actual proper published translation. it still constantly misses out on wordplay, tone, accents, intentionally jumbled/atypical speech, kanji puns, etc
