This. Blizzard is fricking DEAD. Most if not all of the original developers of WoW, but especially WC1-3 have left. Forget the Warcraft team - The FOUNDERS of the company itself have all left. And even those people were not at their best the last decade or so, whether they were high on their own egos or because Activision was actually making the decisions.

Blizzard/WoW has three phases to me in its existence:
Passion and talent phase (WC1 to Pre-ATV Buyout)
Corporate buyout, ego phase (Activision buyout and Metzen's mistakes phase)
Controversy, apathy, greed and "woke" marxism phase (Kotick and the board are entirely running the company's overall game design, we are here)

    There's two minimum prerequisites:
    1) The game actually has to be good
    2) Relaunch/FRESH: The hundred thousand or so whales might be upset about losing their characters, but for "most people" the feeling of never being able to catch up, etc, is a major problem; relaunch is the only way to do away with some of the baggage the game has (for example, you technically could but realistically can't make forced race change for characters of moronic meme races that the game would be better off without); people like to play when their friends are playing and mere expansion/patch (even if it in itself was good!) isn't strong enough Schelling point to coordinate players coming back to the game

The first point is doing a lot of work there.

There is a reason why the population, after the initial growth phase finished during Wrath anyway, follows the following pattern: (diminishing) peaks during expansion launches and then the population just kinda dwindles until the next expansion, and that's despite certain expansions being better than their predecessors, or final patch being better than launch (often times in form of "fixing" moronic borrowed power mechanics): expansion launch is the only point around which players can realistically coordinate coming back to the game, and basically no one returns to the game even temporarily for any other reason. But the game is too far gone that a launch of even a good expansion isn't strong enough signal to rally the players: you need a stronger one, and that is FRESH.

But crucially, THE GAME ALSO HAS TO BE GOOD, so as to not just draw players in but KEEP them playing. I understand Overwatch 2 isn't substantially different from the original, I've even heard it's actually worse in some respects. There have been various private servers for instance that got the usual several thousand population at launch, but then people quickly realized it's basically open source emulation, and the server lost 90% of population in weeks. Ditto for Classic that had the hype to draw in millions of players (probably more than neo-WoW expansions do), but vast majority of players quit after a month or two.

        the hell is borrowed power?

"Levels-after-levels" sort of mechanics, where every character is max level "by default" and the meaningful character-customization happens with expansion-specific mechanics. In Legion you had Artifact power which you lose the moment Battle for Azeroth launched, which had Azerite powers that become defunct in Shadowlands, etc.

My guild has talked about it before. Most of them have been playing since WotLK, and the rest started between there and BFA. Out of the 30-some members, a bit less than a third said they'd be willing to try WoW2. That's anecdotal. Maybe they'd change their mind if it was sufficiently interesting. Maybe there's more people willing to come back or give a first try to WoW2 than you'd lose from sunsetting the original. What's guaranteed is that it's asking a fanbase that every doomposter swears is disenchanted to trust a new Blizzard product and anteing up the most loyal setions of the existing fanbase to do so. That's foolish and suicidal.

Maybe, but the original question was framed such that it would ba bout revival of "the glory days" (or at least Legion era, or keeping Classic launch population numbers for longer than a month), and that's definitely not gonna happen just by pandering to Stockholm syndrome whales.

Wait. Normies buy games in genre waves. Being one of two MMOs that have the inertia to stick around regardless of quality, they simply have to wait for the next time a major influencer has an "I'm gonna play MMOs" phase and they have a 50/50 shot of getting the bump for 4 months.

    depends. classic+ or new expansion?
all classic+ has to do is go the alternative timeline route and be a new expansion starting after Vanilla
even an expansion after WOTLK would be fine too, going the alternative timeline where the Cataclysm never happens / is stopped.
Alternative timelines being canonical for the classic servers would be cool because you could add meta stuff / collab events

Dragonflight btw is unsalvagable for many reasons. the shit ui, the boring burst-oriented gameplay, the shitty story. DF and retail have no future and they will come to terms with that eventually. No wonder they are rehiring metzen, it's a very clear show classic+ expansion is coming.

Pristine servers are a big one. So no lfd, no heirlooms, no cross server, none of that shit. Do that, and launch fresh. After you do that, you need to really make an expansion that makes people care. Like a legion. So basically what that dude said above in the thread about launching fresh in combination with the game being good. But you really need to go way beyond just that.

Heard Metzen is back in Blizzard. This will not help them at all. I also don't think the Microsoft buyout will help them too.
After all these years and all the bullshit that happened I see no way in hell for them to get back and make it all batter. Even if the rumors are true and they are making StarCraft III and WarCraft IV. Because that would've required SCIII to retcon SCII while WCIV would require to cut off itself from WoW. Ain't gonna happen and WoW ruined its own setting irrevocably. Same with StarCraft with the 2nd game, Diablo after D2LoD and going into D3 onwards...even OW ruined itself with needless bullshit and then completely annihilated itself with Blizzard essentially removing the original, changing the meta and lying about stuff that was supposed to appear in but didn't in the final version (hence why it's the lowest-rated game on Steam...or was until a title whose name I will never mention demoted it to being the 2nd lowest-rated game on Steam).

Thats the leveling part. For a lot of people, leveling is the best part of new expansion but its so fricking quick and shallow.

End-game progression HAS to be something else than dungeons -> mythic + -> raids. Game needs end game questlines, prebis hunting, good gear from dungeons and recipe hunting + raid level gear from crafting

I honestly do not see them creating an MMO anymore. I'm a nostalgiagay and I know that even with a fresh start from vanilla or WC3, I won't bother playing WoW anymore. The time of close-knit communities is gone and I blame the social climate we live in today. The reason I stopped in the first place was because everyone else was getting out by the end of WotLK.
They are best of making a WRPG in the WC3/Vanilla timeline, expanding the continents with DLC. Doing a MMO or gacha/lootbox fighter is not going to be worth the investment. Regulations and the lack of a chinese market would kill it before making a profit. There is too much bad blood to fix the latter.
And anyone that thinks that removing the woke shit is going to fix it is mistaken. People who quit, quit because the game is shit. People who dislike the woke stuff won't even play.

a non meme answer for retail would be to actually add good content outside of m+ and raid, and pvp. Bear in mind, any iteration of WoW shits on FF14 entirely and completely without any effort.

The new zones added shouldn't just be used for a short while then become obsolete. A good horizontal progression system would be a catalyst for zones to be used more.

This is kind of player problem though, because WoW players don't like to do any content that isn't directly upgrading their character's ilvl - so devs don't bother, and alot of new players tune out of the game as a result. New players probably weren't expecting WoW to be so small in actuality and only consist of 3 modes of play while mostly sitting in town.

For classic, they can only do so much with dated gameplay and nostalgia. They need to do what they can to force an authentic leveling experience rather than keep in exploits like mage power leveling and mob tagging that just allows every player to min-max and skip the entire point of classic.

Here's what they need to do:

    1. Add the dungeon finder back in, but introduce a cool down timer on it...like max use once or twice a day, and if you want to do beyond that, you need to go to the actual dungeon and form a party. Having no dungeon finder worked back in the day because there were no wikis and people were relatively social, but unfortunately nowadays due to censorship and the political climate, people don't talk anymore

    2. Add pro social features back into the game. Social energy is why we do anything or are motivated to do anything at all in life. Think about money for example...money only has value because we all collectively agree that it does, without us all in agreement, even the words we use and money we use to buy things has no value or inherent meaning. Think about why we want to excel or get good at something...it's usually to compete with other people. We are social creatures and they need to desperately stop catering to whining homosexuals that want everything easy and to play an MMORPG solo...if you want to do that, go play a single player game

    3. They need to spruce up vanilla and leveling content to bring into it some life again. It's been played to death, they should do something to increase the difficulty. People have wikis, subreddits etc to breeze through everything now and are looking for a challenge. In a day and age where games are being played to death, speed run, dominated etc...and after having been exposed to pro gamers on twitch etc...people want to be challenged

    4. Reduce the amount of servers and increase the max population of those servers. Worlds should feel alive and teeming with life...having way too many servers and players spread out across those servers makes the game world feel dead. If you complain about farming for resources, too bad. Ignore these homosexual whiners and implement it anyway

    5. Introduce challenging new modes for end game content that guilds/players can work towards

      Anonymous

      6. Work on the pvp scene. Get people interested in pvp, introduce new gear, promote it etc

      7. Old WoW never had this, but introduce penalities for death and make world pvp more relevant...introduce something in addition to the honor...little mini games or something where you protect places like tarren mill or whatever in each zone. WoW doesn't have to be 1:1 like the old WoW, change things up a bit like old school runescape has

      8. Introduce new gear, new crafting recipes, new profession mechanics...etc etc. WoW doesn't have to be 1:1

      9. Create a gameplay loop where creation of new characters is encouraged...maybe being able to sell your chars to other players? Or for some kind of blizz credit? Basically something that gives you an incentive to keep playing the game, possibly letting you get real world benefits

      10. Make gold in the game more relevant. After a certain point, after you've got your end game mount and all your gems etc...gold becomes worthless. Make it more relevant and tie it into point 9

        11. Add more guild features. Being part of a guild is a critical aspect of the game...I feel like the guild system in WoW is currently pretty bare bones...and this ties into point 2, adding more pro social features

      >but unfortunately nowadays due to censorship and the political climate, people don't talk anymore
people not talking has nothing at all to do with your pussy ass persecution complex and everything to do with gameplay.
there needs to be reasons to be social. Look at vanilla, look at SWG, look at EQ.
You're on the right track but your reasoning is for whatever reason incredibly flawed and chances are high you won't understand this anyhow.

people not talking is tied heavily to the political climate and censorship...you don't know what you're talking about

nta but he's right, people who don't want to deal with potential blowback for wrongthink simply stop socializing and talking altogether.

This, but also the political climate is causing polarization in peoples thinking...this causes every subject matter to be political, which again causes people to not even bother talking. Go back to 2007 and barely anyone even mentioned trannies and other issues. Now everything is tied to feminism, trannies taking over etc

You have to accept that the thing you loved is dead. It happens to every franchise sooner or later.

You can save wow just through marketing. These morons make posts like "idk guys I'm getting the itch" without any shame.
People do want to play WoW they just don't like getting mocked for liking such a soulless derelict game.
If I was Blizzard I'd bring the infinite grind back so the rats can rejoice and run back into the maze.

Can't have that. Somewhere in the UK some fat bald moron cried that he was forced to run MoS 10,000 times. Gun to the head because mythic dildodriller titancaller in Mightyhold won't mathematically die on week 1 unless your AP has 10,000 MoS runs on it prior to the week 2 knowledge scaling. Very important. Did I mention the problem isn't Blizzard? It's these sad fricks razing anything nice and going to war with the dev team if they encounter anything resembling an RPG mechanics or a character choice locked in?

They can start by actually dealing with bits and permabanning goldBUYERS.

I will not even spare a single glance for your shit game until the bare minimum is met.

You have NO excuse for not automatically detecting and instantly banning flyhackers.
Oh, this character is in a coordinate that isn't normally accessible? Banned instantly

Anyone who thinks WoW is salvageable never acknowledges the fact that the economy is permanently fricked by both botting and the WoW token, and since Blizzard makes money on both of those things, they will never be removed, ergo, WoW cannot be fixed or salvaged on that basis alone.

      >permabanning goldBUYERS.
Won't happen until Blizzard agrees to discontinue the WoW Token (i.e. never).

Lets think logically. Question is why people loved and still coming back to play wow?
Take a look at how the population surges. Only extremely small minority sticks around a few months more, only to raidlog a while and they vanish in time aswell. Initial super high pop comes from the phase as everyone is low-mid level adventurers... adventuring. Some crafts, some pvp, mostly running around and questing meeting people and npcs at random, random gear, random drops, not a lot of minmaxxing, constant progress to move on. Tedious but rewarding but rewards are not overpowering sort of rewards, they only further the progress forwards.

If they would emphasize on this aspect and come up with some sort of way to develop the game on that axis, I shit you not they will make an absolute killing. However current wow is doing the absolute exact opposite, very little adventure, more railroaded storyline (and fricking cringe one at that) you sit at the side to watch, player quickly bought up to the endgame grind that is just that, grind.
Honestly I cant decide if thats really an intended business model, because some games actually do that; pump out content (but actually every few months) get people playing a few weeks, they drop and get them back with next content. But something tells me they are just simply inconceivably stupid and do exactly the opposite of what they should be doing without realisation.

Wasn't there a supposed insider post on here recently that said Metzen was coming back before they announced it?

Do a WoD-like expansion of Warcraft 2; but, don't shy away from the gritty shit

at this point they'd need a full ARR-style rework to generate press/mass appeal
lgbt shit aside, the biggest problem with Dragonflight is that they're trying to emphasize optional content with cosmetic rewards in a game that literally nobody plays for the fashion
