what caused the indie pokemon rip-off market to get so big these last few years? pretty much everyone that came out in these last couple of years has a sequel in development, and there are new ones being announced all the time. was pokemon disenfranchising 1% of their fanbase enough to make the indie market for these games viable?
GameFreak giving up entirely with Gen VIII.
>GameFreak giving up entirely with Gen III
FTFY
At the very least you could've said VI, you'd still be FAR too generous, but when they went 3D they reached new lows.
gen 2 was undeniably the least effort they ever put in, it was absolutely just shitting to get something out the door while the brand was white hot after all the shovelware side games they were doing
>the gen that introduced the most and the most significant gameplay mainstays in the series
>the least effort they put
Gen 3 gave us
>overhauled storage system with tons of extra space and customization and that doesn't require saving constantly
>overhauled inventory that's much easier to navigate and organize
>improved berries
>DVs being replaced by EVs and IVs, making more pokémon unique
>double battles
>abilities
>DVs being replaced by EVs and IVs
>abilities
Both did irreparable damage to the games.
Yeah, by introducing customization, making Pokémon feel more unique and giving them another way of being useful that's unrelated to stats. Dumbass.
Why is there always one aspie in pokemon threads who needs to clarify that AKSHUALLY hoenn killed the series forever (its when he grew out of pokemon)
Was it autism?
do midwits like you ever think of the possibility that maybe things actually got worse and it's not just people "growing out" of things
whatever helps you cope autist
didn't think so, that would require thinking when it's easier to handwave everything with a extremely vague assertion that you picked up from useful idiots making excuses for an ever worsening culture and industry
God I hope the sequel is good.
Its being "directed" by some online groyper type so the answer is a resounding hell no

>t. tranimalgay
This game had potential but the actual combat sucked. I love monster taming but besides persona, smt, digimon, Pokémon and monster sanctuary I haven’t found any good ones. Cassette beasts had shit designs.
Have you given Dragon Quest Monsters a go?
I’d love to if it comes out on pc
For me so,etching very important besides gameplay is feeling like the monsters aren’t just sprites with stats tacked on but actual creatures that have a real ecological place and exist in the world.
gay and cringe
Just emulate the old games. DS has Joker 2 and citra has Joker 3 and the remake of (not Joker) 2.
The problem is that they are so obviously inspired by Pokemon that they don't really have much of their own identity. I wished more monster collectathons were more inspired by Yokai and/or SMT instead of strictly being Pokemon inspired. Hell, take more inspiration from something like the spinoff games like Rangers or PMD. Casette Beasts is pretty neato but its overworld is kinda ugly ngl.
If we got more stuff as involved as Cassette Beasts and Monster Sanctuary then i will gladly go far away from GameFreak. Matsuda can go suck my dick. I finished MS when it released and it gave me so much joy that i continued to look for games like it. I am currently playing Cassette Beasts and i can't wait to go hunt for bootlegs
the problem isn't so much as them being inspired my Pokémon rather than their monster designs being generic RPG critters, just look at OP's pic that is just DQ monsters
Still better than current pokemon
Pokémon has good fundamentals. The type tree is mostly intuitive, the turn based 1v1 battles are easy to understand, there are a ton of different ways to build a team, etc. It lacks quality of life improvements, a bigger, less linear world, better writing and options for higher difficulty fights. Pic related is a great example of how to do the Pokémon formula right.
That's pretty much the gist of it, yeah.
People like to say the Dexit boycott failed, but my gut tells me it kind of didn't, there was just a big enough base on the Switch that sales went up anyway.
The dex boycott did fail, Cassette beasts and Mon sanct are just good enough to be worth playing on their own merits.
I had fun with Monster Crown but the dev very obviously lacked a cohesive vision for the actual gameplay
Dexgate was always dumb, did anyone think they wouldn't run out of data storage for every pokemon?
>did anyone think they wouldn't run out of data storage for every pokemon?
A single Pokemon doesn't even take up a kilobyte. They're selling like 3mb of storage for $20 a fricking year, and haven't increased the games' local storage in over a decade.
Do you guys really have to repeatedly try the falseflag thing
What false flag? They cut Pokemon and keep ingame storage pitifully low in order to make you buy a cloud storage subscription that is massively overpriced for no reason other than Pokemon gays being domesticated cattle who will pay for literally anything that has a Pikachu on it.
>what false flag
Stuff like these
Are obvious falseflags purely so you can react to your own posts with outrage
?
They wanted to make good pokemon games
Both gens on Switch, particularly Violet/Scarlet, have severely damaged the Pokemon reputation and I'm sure I'm not the only one that went elsewhere looking for a monster catching experience.
Really enjoyed Cassette Beasts and Coromon. Hoping we get more innovation like that. Pokemon NEEDS some competition or else they are just going to keep putting out mediocre 5fps shit everytime.
Why did SwSh damage their rep? S/V I get, but SwSh didn't seem that bad to me. It wasn't anything great, it was just a typical pokemon game, but nothing about it seemed so bad to damage their rep
It’s just a forced narrative by people mad about the dex cut, this group has been consistent enough to damage conversation online since they spam the same bullshit everywhere but it doesn’t actually effect sales
Dex cut has always been a thing, it's so you use the new pokemon instead of just the same monsters every single time which would make it boring and then you won't buy the games anymore anyway. I'm not a fan of a lot of the new mon from the past 2 or 3 gens in general but it makes sense why they do it. I suppose a good fix would be just locking old gens behind post game.
Here we see one falseflagging
I genuinely don't know what you mean, I said that in earnest.
>Dex Cut has always been a thing
Fricking goddamn moronic homosexual
>Dex cut has always been a thing
You're literally moronic. Do some research before spouting shit, you clueless homosexual.
Yeah it's basically a pool of what's 10-20k people mindlessly repeating the same message. while the Pokemon games are in the scale of 15-30million.
Their mindless mantra obviously cuts through the conversation through sheer volume but one person saying they hate Pokemon one thousand times can still only reduce the sales by 1.(and even then I suspect people that obsessed still buy it)
It was an extremely bad looking game that was very buggy on launch.
Plus barren for content.
Because it somehow lowered the standards of Pokemon games even further. On the surface it looks like your average Pokemon game, but it basically does the bare minimum in everything. Hyper linear, extremely boring region with horrible route design on top of having very few routes, somehow lower difficulty than the average Pokemon game when the series isn't hard in the first place, the generation's gimmick is somehow even worse than the previous ones, even the music sucks. It's horrible, not just because it sucks, but because it's boring in how it sucks.
Swsh is average difficulty, the easiest are XY/ORAS and the hardest are SV/SuMo
Now that you listed the faults out I do agree with a lot of them like the bare minimum, how linear it is, the region is weak compared to many others, route design. The overall difficulty was easy more so the trainers but gym leaders and Leon weren't too bad especially if you don't grind. I liked the gens gimmick more than SV the only issue is very few mon got gigantamax forms so just making every other mon big is lazy, mega evolutions are the best gimmick so far.
>It wasn't anything great, it was just a typical pokemon game
That's precisely why people got pissed. Moving to the Switch meant not having to work around the limitations of the 3DS, they could go for a more ambitious game and use that opportunity to improve features introduced in previous gens. Instead, we got recycled assets and more of the same. SV are dogshit games but they at least tried an open world.
SWSH was so bad they stopped having spokespeople. Masuda, Turner, and Omori were all front and center with SWSH but they clamped down tight on that shit and basically went totally radio silent
>That moment they just flat ou said they are cutting pokemon and that's the modus operandi going forward.
Man Masuda really got mindbroken after BW reception.
Good, he should be ashamed of BW, it was the first time pokemon was ever boring enough that I didn't buy BW2.
I also still hate the simis, a lot.
BW is dogshit and anyone with eyes or a functioning brain can see that.
BW2 is decent, but BW is garbage, and it's been rightfully shat on nonstop since it came out.
sperg moment
have a nice day zoomers, the weird cult around gen 5 didn't start until well after its launch.
gb2discord
>Why did SwSh damage their rep? S/V I get, but SwSh didn't seem that bad to me.
Is this a joke? SV has an assload of issues (most of them tchnical) but swsh was downright offensive. The dex cut was also the most glaringly obvious thing to point to.
>Why did SwSh damage their rep? S/V I get, but SwSh didn't seem that bad to me.
Dexit, games at best looks like an upscaled 3DS game at best and a mish-mash of a PS2 and N64 normally, Rides are really fricking boring and you need online if you wanna have a fighting chance otherwise good luck with the moronic AI, game is content barren needing to fork an extra 30 for extra content, battle tower is the most soulless and easy allowing you to D-Max whenever you want with only Leon doing so and allowing to bring box legends an mythicals to the "serious" modes, plot is the most stupid and moronic of all being basically a worse retread of Gen 6 with the whole destroy your "friends" dreams while the villain go fulls moronic "muh 1000 years", game was very buggy and got just a bit better at the end, following pokemon was brought back is the most stupid and poorly coded manner possible and only in the DLC areas, etc.
Like it's not hard to find what's wrong with the game, the only good thing they have are the QoL they brought otherwise they are just stinky, now that Gen 9 came and became an even buggy mess the fanbase and it's defense force jumped ship and some are outright saying the games were always awful.
>make a pokemon fangame
>then use the popularity of it to go off and make your own original monster collecting game
based?
>based?
absolutely
romhacks are at their best when they are original stories and Sprite work why not create a pokélike and you can gain money for your efforts
>bought Cassette Beasts
>prompted to select pronouns
>refunded
Honestly? I am kind of glad that happened. You can continue shitposting about garbage and people who enjoy video games can go and appreciate a good game. You stay in your swamp with the other troglodytes screeching at imaginary ghosts and people can enjoy actually good games. It's a win win.
>bro just support globohomosexual by consuming product
Nah I'm fine with spending 5 mins buying/downloading/returning degenerate slop in order to give the purveyor a middle finger.
What i said completely went over your head.
>bro just support globohomo
Globohomosexual doesn't exist beyond youre heads, /misc/tard, that's the actual point.
homosexuals existing is not a conspiracy, is a fact as old as two monkeys discovered anal sex.
There's definitively an effort to push propaganda into media, it's not exclusive to games. Activists live for that shit, they are like walking advertisements, fueled by a desire to stand up against some abstract entity that's conveniently out of their reach, wasting away their lives chasing after an impossible goal while companies and politicians exploit them endlessly. Some anons dislike this effort and "disown" games whenever they see red flags that suggest that activists made them, like pronoun shit, girlbosses, interracial couples, etc. How much they are willing to overlook and whenever or not their assumption is correct varies a lot.
they should re institutionalize you guys again I swear internet rotted your brain
>avatargayging schizo having a meltdown
classic
You have no argument, that's why you are seething.
I'm just sick of you schizos coming to Ganker shitposting what you see on twitter here.
I'm done giving you the attention you crave.
you need to touch grass
>you need to touch grass
ok twittertroon
>I'm done giving you the attention you crave.
Lmao, I crave? I was giving my thoughts on the subject, you chose to reply with garbage posts. I gave you more than what you deserved because I felt like talking about something that I wanted to. But whatever keeps you in that glass box you call confidence. I'm sure you'll find some other way to waste your time here.
I don't like that shit in games and I'll tell you now the game has gay/ trans characters and shit in it you'll hate. Play for the gameplay and the monsters and some of the story and the music, not the shallow characters.
Why do you engage with him when you know it's just a shitposter. He probably can't get passed how the game looks to actually find out if he likes the game. I also don't like pronouns and i just leave the dialogue pass over my head because the game is enjoyable but there is no negotiating with people like this.
It might not be a shitpost, I have stopped playing games for similar reasons if I don't have enough interest in it to push through.
just say that you got filtered without the cringe /misc/ grandstanding bigot.
and this time take your meds
seething troony
not my fault you suck.
play more games and get off Ganker and touch real grass (not the astroturf variety)
If I see that shit in a game, I don't buy it on principle regardless of the gameplay. If you want to turn my hobby into a culture war, it goes both ways.
based. ignore the homosexuals trying to be non-nonchalant, vote with your wallet.
I get you, the reason I let it slide is because it isn't too egregious. There's the pronoun options and then there's a character in the game who is gay or trans I didn't care to go too in-depth in it. If they put too much of that in I would've refunded, what it had to offer was greater than the the stuff like that in it that I hated.
I want to frick the shit out of the fat paki chick
When will bigots like you finally learn to celebrate AIDS? *sigh*
And yet not one of them manage to get even a bit of recognition.
When you don't look for alternatives you won't find them. There are at least 3 game being recommended in this thread that are almost guaranteed to give you the pokemon feel. At the end of the day you either like hating on pokemon and continuing playing it or hating it and never play it, in which case why are you here
Nexomon.
Coromon.
Monster Sanctuary.
Just because (you) don't know about something doesn't mean everyone else is the same.
I know all about coromon. It evolves into Agumon and is my best friend.
How can you misspell your friends name like that?
Which way digiMAN?
Frontier isn't a real Digimon series.
Nexo and Coro's monster designs are so fricking boring and bland.
Still miles better than modern pokemon
You can tell at a glance those games suck
For anyone who hasn’t played it I recommend Ni no Kuni, takes way too long to let you capture monsters though
Playing through Monster Sanctuary right now. Picked it up for $5 on sale and its great, absolute boat load of content and it is actually a good difficulty. If you dismiss games "at a glance" its no wonder you would turn around and recommend something like Ni no Kuni. That shit is more braindead easy than Pokemon.
Thats exactly what i was trying to tell him earlier with Cassette Beasts and Monster Sanctuary. I randomly found out about MS and i was really happy to have found it. I am now looking forward to whatever the devs do next.
>next MS dev game is a roguelike
Into the trash
Not sure how I feel about this really, they didn't need to make another Metroidvania necessarily but rogue-like is a weird option for a monster collection game. Monster Sanctuary was great, I ran a full goblin team and the synergies were insane.
NNK has some decently challenging sections, and you are fricking autistic if you judge games purely on how le hard they are
>says the homosexual who judges games "at a glance"
It’s a shitty Pokemon that makes itself harder by removing players options and turning up the numbers I’ve been around the block enough times lol
>gets filtered by a pokemon clone
You're right anon, I should stick to just judging games at a glance instead.
I don't judge games solely on their difficulty, but if a game is so easy that you can't meaningfully engage with 90% of the mechanics, that is a major flaw and makes for a boring ass game.
>so easy that you can't meaningfully engage with 90% of the mechanics, that is a major flaw and makes for a boring ass game.
Doesn’t apply to NNK
I ascended multiple times in Nethack and Demon I don’t need a shittier but harder Pokemon
>recommends fricking Ni no kuni of all things
I got bored of this boring piece of shit 3 hours in.
>muh studio Ghibli designs
They are good for movies, shit for a game.
Ni no Kuni COULD have been good but it wasn't.
>You can tell at a glance those games suck
eh I wouldn't be that harsh. They were alright, not shit, but room to improve for sure.
That's because they're designed by talentless hacks with no ideas of their own.
>Monster Sanctuary.
hold on, this one doesn't look half bad.
how is it
Its great. I just beat the main story in about 30 hours and am now doing post-game exploration and end game boss fights. You fight in teams of 3 on 3, each monster has a massive skill tree and can equip 4 different pieces of gear. Finding synergies and building teams around them is really fun.
Couldn't tell you where I am with it, but I've explored a bit and I think it's alright. I've certainly played worse, but for me it's one of those 'turn brain off and listen to music' type games, which isn't for everybody.
It was my second favorite game among those I first played in 2023
There's a big wake-up call in the story to make you come up with some kind of decent team strategy if you're not playing on easy mode, and there's a lot of room to go full autismo with teambuilding, which was especially fun for me in the postgame boss/keeper fights
nexomon would be good if they ditched the writer and got someone outside twitter to write it
pokemon games being significantly worse.
People are finally growing out Pokemon because it went to shit pretty hard but not enough so the market is available. But it sucks none of the indies are a quarter as good as Yo-kai Watch. I'm convinced this is a subgenre you need a budget to succeed in.
Are there any indie digimon/vpet ripoffs?
Anode Heart is supposed to be heavily inspired by Digimon, but it looks like the generic 1v1 Pokemon battling most of these games have. Bugaboo Pocket is a bug raising game set to come out sometime this year.
I saw that they implemented the combat from the digimon card game which was surprising
The people who grew up playing Pokemon started making games.
Yes we know, that's why Pokemon is full of coom shit now.
I wish all monsters in games like these were viable so you could use your actual favorites. Even NNK has EZ PZ mode if you recruit the dinoceros line, then if you get multiple you've just won the entire game+
They are viable though because these games are very easy and more about collecting and team building.
It's not like it's SMT or something.
Okay beat the game with shit like caterpie without over levelling
Oh, when you say viable you just mean buff everything so you don't need to put in any effort. If you want to use shitters you need to put in extra work. That doesn't make them not viable.
No I mean why can you not just have a held item that gives caterpie the same stats as butterfree instead of having to do gay shit like using a focus sash then using endeavour then using quick attack if you ever want to use a cool pokemon but it has shit stats. Eviolite doesn't count because all it does it boosts defense stats a bit.
Touhoumon is like that. Each "pokémon" has multiple forms that you can change into on the fly by using evolutionary stones. They share the same BST and the differences come from stats, abilities, movesets and (sometimes) typing. You can even swap back and forth between forms to build some crazy strong movesets. So, your favorites can fill different niches.
Interesting concept, but I don't like touhou.
>touhou
BOOOOOO!!!!
Is that game decent? The only thing steam reviews say is its buggy af
It's ass. It is super buggy and the story is cringe as frick. The devs seem more interested into selling their card game then fixing their goddamn game.
Its incredibly buggy, even the console releases feels like playing a Steam early access game. It also gets boring and old real quick, making you wish you were playing on an emulator just to turn on the fast forward speed up.
Nah, it had potential but the guy can't fix this fricking buggy game and jumped straight into a card game and a sequel.
I'm still yet to find a pokemon clone that is actually worth playing. I tried disc creatures and monster crown and both are average.
If you're a pokemon fan, try PokeWilds. I've been running it on my 'eck and it's great.
What would make one worth playing?
Not that anon, but to me it would be having it's own distinct personality. Every indie game that takes inspiration from Pokemon I've seen seem to be simply going for "it's Pokemon, except it's not". It's fine to take inspiration from something you like or think has untapped potential, but at least try to make your game have it's own identity.
I'm on a new PC so I don't remember the name but the itch.io game with a demo coming out this month looks cool where you use VHS tapes or camera pictures or something to catch monsters looks good, if anybody knows the name say it, they use the kappa monster a lot in the promos.
In the last decade, the most fun I've had in Pokemon was Clover and PokeMMO. GF fricked up, and other people are doing what they can't.
Only pokemon ripoff I sorta liked was world of final fantasy
I liked the stacking system and the combat, even if the story kinda sucked
I enjoyed that a lot at the time, but my PC was third world tier at the time so the enjoyment was limited, but it's not a game i'd ever replay even with a much better pc.
I heard the PC port is horrendous. I played it on ps4 so I had no problems there
I remember some monsters just not appearing on screen or they had major texture issues
NGL that game really fricking dragged on. I was really enjoying it, but when the plot twist happens and you get the air ship, oh hell no.
Waiting for the turn gauge is just needless padding, just making it actually turn based so that battles go by faster, the fast forward only barely helped.
If you mean the first big twist, thats where i dropped the game too. Thought i was done and apparently wasnt, but my enthusiasm dissipated
I just really didn’t like that you fight as the MCs instead of just having 6 dudes
Very mechanically complex, cool long beastiary
I recommend siralim ultimate if you really like tea, building
Anyone played it?
It's a GBC DQM but not as good.
Yes, it's fantastic, I 100% recommend it. It's soulful, funny, has good designs, can be difficult, allows for min maxing, and there's actually a lot of secrets to find. I can't fricking find most of them because it's such a niche game with no real wiki or anything.
I did, wasn't able to do the post-game because my toaster fried but the game was great and full of soul.
Pokémon hasn’t been good in 15 years
I wish these games would start ripping off Viva Pinata instead of Pokemon. Nothing scratches the same itch as that game.
I wish there was a good viva pinata rip-off, even its own sequel sucked. The original is so fricking good.
>even its own sequel sucked
You're not the first person I've seen say this but I don't understand this opinion TiP is basically just the first game again but with more content.
Indieshitters are incapable of having an original idea, they can only steal and copy what everyone else is doing in hopes that their game, and not the other identical game they copied from, will be the next undertale
Unfortunately for them, the only thing pokegays care about is the name, so even if they somehow managed to craft an excellent monster catching game, nobody would play it simply because it's not pokemon
Fr fr only big companies can make good games
they’re all shit
I dropped this game when I found out that the pokemons you catch are hard level capped below your party's level after I literally wasted 2 hours catching some strong ass superboss monster
>what caused the indie pokemon rip-off market to get so big these last few years?
massive gap in the market and indie devs are opportunistic parasites
Gamefreak shitting the bed.
Pokemon got really bad and people who grew up with Pokemon started making games
What DQ monsters games are worth playing?
3ds remakes, Joker games, monsters 3
Pokémon went to shit a decade ago and ppl desperately want a replacement
Play Eve's game!
now here’s a shit game for the mentally ill homosexual trannies that gets shilled hard as hell
quite the opposite. The devs are lesbians and openly hate trannies. They even let their game go on sale for 41% to celebrate the rate of troony suicides
yeah we all know your sales pitch homosexual it’s troony gay shit but but for fat bull dykes
Devs are GCs huh?
yet their own game suggests otherwise
it's like JKR and Harry Potter
it's always projection
too bad their grifting got them nowhere
exactly but they’ll just repeat the 41% shit when point it out when every character is draw a boy call it a girl dyke tumblr oc
that explains the shilling from/vpol/ thinking that this is a gotcha
how pathetic and they accuse us of making everything "political"
>us
I’m not a troony or a homosexual/dyke your all mentally ill and you don’t need to go on /misc/ to find that out
is it on switch?
no, just Steam from what I see
>western pokeclones
Please for the love of fricking god recommend me something in this genre that’s actually good.
suicide
if nothing in the thread piqued your interest, or if you've played them and didn't like them, then rom hacks might just be your only hope
what are you looking for then
Azure Dreams
Any Siralimmers?
I ascended my class and got bored but that was like 100 hours or something lol
Entertaining if you like grindan
I got 51 hours in it but haven't played it regularly in around 2 years.
Some guy on /vp/ made this. I was excited for it until I got a code, and it just felt so mediocre. Even the overworld movement felt really cheap.
Everyone is shooting their shot, everyone is missing.
I hope you guys have hacked your 3DS and transferred your mons, because GF's gonna pull the plug on Bank. That's the second time we'll be getting a no move forward on the pokemon games.
its very obvious just looking at the utter dogshit that is modern pokemon
I nearly bought this, and then I remembered romhacks exist
