Like all games where cooperation is the key to success, this game (at ""hard"" content) is less fun the more garbage your teammates are. Doesn't matter if you're friends or not, shitters WILL ruin your mood. I know because multiple, multiple groups and people I know all have the same experience, from casual fun groups to the 'hardcore' ones.
Not ALL groups are toxic, but there's a good chance you'll get at least one toxic person in your handful of 7. It comes down to whether the other 6 feed the toxic or play around it and try to improve instead of break down and force a disband.

You can't shit on something that people have lost literal months of their lives doing. Especially if that something is as unproductive as FFXIV. The tipping point was when I realized after spending 6 hours getting the mount for WoL EX that I had just spent an entire sunny day getting a glorified walking song. Mount grinding was nothing new and I spent way longer getting other things. I just realized that the biggest timesinks are aesthetic and that the game stops changing after you finish Stormblood. There's no reward or progress made when you do engame shit. You're just as strong as everyone else, you have access to the same things as everyone else; what's the point? There are games that make way more worthy of our time. Addicts have to find their own way out.
Yes and the problems it has players are very vocal about, like housing crisis and limited glamour system. The vast majority of players are negative on these. But stuff like "I think the game should have 1.5 GCD and Mythic+ dungeons-" "Frick off" isnt one of them.

the MSQ is the antithesis of "show, don't tell", despite video games being the best medium for utilizing that storytelling principle. Japanese storytelling is always heavy on exposition and low on anything actually happening, but XIV cranks that up to 11.

My frame of reference is EQ, FFXI, EvE, GW, GW2, ESO, Lost Ark, WoW. Compared to most of those other games FFXIV is fast. GW2 is like some abomination of an outlier, you will have some class builds that have APM's faster than WoW and you also have some builds that have lower APM than a 4x strategy game.

My frame of reference is EQ, FFXI, EvE, GW, GW2, ESO, Lost Ark, WoW. Compared to most of those other games FFXIV is fast. GW2 is like some abomination of an outlier, you will have some class builds that have APM's faster than WoW and you also have some builds that have lower APM than a 4x strategy game.

Haste is significantly more impactful on your GCD in WoW than skill speed is in XIV. Skill speed is basically irrelevant for most classes.

You're wrong on this whole GCD thing, FF14 works the same as WoW as in the GCD is reduced based on your stats. In WoW it's haste, in FF14 it's Skill Speed. They work the same way as in they reduce your GCD and auto attack speed. That's also not the only buff a bunch of classes have buffs to further increase their skill speed, the one he posted in that screenshot is for monk, but samurai has one too it's not unique.
As stated before, even with good skill speed FF14 is still way slower than most MMOs.

To start, you have to be a WoW player that just recently quit the game and is trying to validate his decision by being extremely annoying everywhere he goes.

UWU had the best enrage mechanic in the game, the Ultima gauge, that once filled he'd start casting the enrage and it would increase over time or by dying or doing mechanics in a certain way.
Said mechanics being the balls to soak that dealt SO much damage. The more people soaked them the spreaded the damage would become and easier to heal but the more the gauge would fill up at the same time, making the enrage quickier. So you had this decision where you could make the mechanic easy and trivial but make the DPS check stricter or do it in hard mode but make the DPS check easier.
Shit like this has never been replicated in any fight after that, ever again. That's what Ultimates should've been, not "spam trios lol" garbage.

I'm genuinely asking here if my observations are correct at all from my gameplay so far (lvl 46)
1. Since this game was salvaged basically I wholly expected the backend to be garbage but I have to know- has it been improved *at all* since ARR?
What I mean is, does it ever get past 20 screen fades per story quest to do very basic things like say- loading in new characters, animating anyone doing anything but walking or statically gesturing, etc? Or requiring me to click on a sparkle to transition to a cutscene, then doing that like 5 times in the same quest 5 fricking feet away?
2. Is there literally any dynamism to dungeons or content that isn't handled by fade aways and cuts? Like changes to the map, dynamic animations that aren't enemies spawning from thin air, etc?
3. Is there a single likable character you spend more than 5 minutes with?
4. Does gearing get interesting at all? In any way?

MSQ is MSQ and it's mostly going from cutscene to cutscene. There's some things to interrupt the walk between cutscenes crap including gimmicks like walking around with a NPC, but it's not done often and it's mostly present in the later expansions. The story, voice acting and other aspects get drastically better in Heavensward though so it makes it easier to deal with the bullshit of the MSQ. >dynamism to dungeons
Not right now, though plans for that are being added in new content in 6.2. Some of the later dungeons starting with Stormblood are very 'cinematic' and take place in massive battles, with various characters coming in, but it's all still scripted. As with most MMOs, there's the BiS set, and then there's being a clown. If you're talking about raid gearing, it's quite limited in choice, but there's no bullshit like rep grinds to get into Savage raiding, you just make/buy a set of crafted gear and can go in from day 1.
However stuff like Eureka, to a lesser extent Bozja and Blue Mage stuff lets you customize your skills instead. A 56 man raid in Eureka has recently been cleared with 56 tanks running different skills and abilities.
The only reason I want to keep playing XIV is because I like glamours and I hope I'll be able to find a cute gamer gf here since there are actual girls playing this game (but I need to be careful in order to avoid troons and landwhales)
that said the game itself is pretty shitty and boring, I've even finished Endwalker and aside from a select few moments of the plot it's a game I always kind of forced myself to play (it's not really a chore though)

Looking at parses is good to show your improvement over time and a good indicator that you understand your class. If you can consistently Blue or Purple parse in your class I trust that you understand the fundamentals enough to be a good player in raids and be able to clear content during its release patch. the MSQ is the antithesis of "show, don't tell", despite video games being the best medium for utilizing that storytelling principle. Japanese storytelling is always heavy on exposition and low on anything actually happening, but XIV cranks that up to 11.

My frame of reference is EQ, FFXI, EvE, GW, GW2, ESO, Lost Ark, WoW. Compared to most of those other games FFXIV is fast. GW2 is like some abomination of an outlier, you will have some class builds that have APM's faster than WoW and you also have some builds that have lower APM than a 4x strategy game.

There are abilities like pic related and stats that make it lower as well, you'd be familar with this if you played either WoW or FFXIV as it exists in both as Haste and Skill Speed respectively.
Haste is significantly more impactful on your GCD in WoW than skill speed is in XIV. Skill speed is basically irrelevant for most classes.

You're wrong on this whole GCD thing, FF14 works the same as WoW as in the GCD is reduced based on your stats. In WoW it's haste, in FF14 it's Skill Speed. They work the same way as in they reduce your GCD and auto attack speed. That's also not the only buff a bunch of classes have buffs to further increase their skill speed, the one he posted in that screenshot is for monk, but samurai has one too it's not unique.
As stated before, even with good skill speed FF14 is still way slower than most MMOs.

So far the last ultimate really felt like they're rushing things and making them the hardest they can without thinking if they're fun to execute or not.

UWU had the best enrage mechanic in the game, the Ultima gauge, that once filled he'd start casting the enrage and it would increase over time or by dying or doing mechanics in a certain way.
Said mechanics being the balls to soak that dealt SO much damage. The more people soaked them the spreaded the damage would become and easier to heal but the more the gauge would fill up at the same time, making the enrage quickier. So you had this decision where you could make the mechanic easy and trivial but make the DPS check stricter or do it in hard mode but make the DPS check easier.
Shit like this has never been replicated in any fight after that, ever again. That's what Ultimates should've been, not "spam trios lol" garbage.

For how much money this game prints, they are completely unable to overhaul graphical/gameplay/movement/physics, the game has remained the same state since it was first re-released.

I gave up on Blizzard ever getting their shit together so I'm trying XIV again and holy shit ARR is quite possibly the worst shit I've played. I'm basically trying to get through ARR out of spite so I can club people over the head when they pull the "just wait- ARR is bad but the expansions are good" shit.
I'm genuinely asking here if my observations are correct at all from my gameplay so far (lvl 46)
1. Since this game was salvaged basically I wholly expected the backend to be garbage but I have to know- has it been improved *at all* since ARR?
What I mean is, does it ever get past 20 screen fades per story quest to do very basic things like say- loading in new characters, animating anyone doing anything but walking or statically gesturing, etc? Or requiring me to click on a sparkle to transition to a cutscene, then doing that like 5 times in the same quest 5 fricking feet away?
2. Is there literally any dynamism to dungeons or content that isn't handled by fade aways and cuts? Like changes to the map, dynamic animations that aren't enemies spawning from thin air, etc?
3. Is there a single likable character you spend more than 5 minutes with?
4. Does gearing get interesting at all? In any way?

In fact I like to reiterate that ffxiv gearing is the most boring piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure to see in a game.

MSQ is MSQ and it's mostly going from cutscene to cutscene. There's some things to interrupt the walk between cutscenes crap including gimmicks like walking around with a NPC, but it's not done often and it's mostly present in the later expansions. The story, voice acting and other aspects get drastically better in Heavensward though so it makes it easier to deal with the bullshit of the MSQ.

Not right now, though plans for that are being added in new content in 6.2. Some of the later dungeons starting with Stormblood are very 'cinematic' and take place in massive battles, with various characters coming in, but it's all still scripted. Wait for Criterion dungeons which will have multiple paths etc. I guess there's also Deep Dungeons.

As with most MMOs, there's the BiS set, and then there's being a clown. If you're talking about raid gearing, it's quite limited in choice, but there's no bullshit like rep grinds to get into Savage raiding, you just make/buy a set of crafted gear and can go in from day 1.
However stuff like Eureka, to a lesser extent Bozja and Blue Mage stuff lets you customize your skills instead. A 56 man raid in Eureka has recently been cleared with 56 tanks running different skills and abilities.
The only reason I want to keep playing XIV is because I like glamours and I hope I'll be able to find a cute gamer gf here since there are actual girls playing this game (but I need to be careful in order to avoid troons and landwhales)
that said the game itself is pretty shitty and boring, I've even finished Endwalker and aside from a select few moments of the plot it's a game I always kind of forced myself to play (it's not really a chore though)

I am going to unironically say the story for most of the classes in SWTOR, and most of the scripted cutscenes in SWTOR are better than what I've seen in ARR so far.
And SWTOR's engine is basically the beta version of the Hero Engine- which was for real, only used because the director was friends with the owner of the company that makes the engine.
