the combat is not good, the writing is not good, and while i don't dislike toriyama designs i don't like the way they translate them to 3d.
the humor is a big selling point in japan, but it doesn't carry over well here, although the localizers do their best

DQ XI was worse because it felt like a patchwork of multiple game, with bad writing, bad ost and lol graphism. Everyone recognize Chatting or Overworld themes of DQ VII yet no one recognize any DQ XI theme

Frieren is popular because it’s a great concept and the first two episodes execute it excellently. DQ is generic. Also, Japan got introduced to RPGs through DQ so it has some nostalgia to it. It’s too simple for the West which created the RPG.
Wizardry did that, and DQ was directly inspired by Wizardry

Don't need ATB, just go back to the style of the first game. Single hero, intense 1v1 battles that end in sub 10 moves, shop items are always a direct upgrade. No time wasted on having to click through 4 party members moves/spells, fighting crowds of enemies or upgrading equipment for multiple members.
Music that it's shit would be a start.
I have never played this series because everything I've heard from the music is absolute trash made by some old fart composer who never made a single good song.
I would assume the problem is purely with the translation. In English the games have the stench of a product intended for 3 year olds, and obviously nobody over the age of 3 wants to play Peppa Pig.
