I played it first on a Dreamcast NES emulator long before I joined /vr/. I beat Mother 3 before the translation came out, stumbling around knowing no Japanese. I beat EarthBound after playing 1 and 3. My opinion is informed entirely by my own playthroughs.

"Earthbound beginnings" or whatever didn't come out till the Wii U, it was always just Mother to everyone else and had been fantranslated as such for years. It's the mother fandom after all, Earthbound's just the tacky US name that a SNES game which sold no copies got, having an attachment to it is pointless.

Earthbound Beginnings was the first official release (in any region) of the unreleased US localization of Mother and confirmation that the "Prototype" circulating the Internet was authentic. I'm not even aware of a from-scratch fan-translation, most are based on the Prototype.

nah it was just sandhop's old translation, same with beginnings. although mato made a translation of the gba port with increased exp on a new equip though for the guys who were annoyed with the grinding.

"EarthBound" is only what they called Mother 2 after the localization stripped away all the direct references to Mother 1 and made it a standalone game.
"EarthBound" was first used as the name of the NES game, Mother, that got officially translated for release in America but was cancelled. The name was later used for the Super Nintendo game.
