It was dying ever since they stopped sharing subscriber numbers and every expansion has had less players than the previous one. Even my diehard WoWnerd fans are quitting at this point, some of which have played since Classic (so did I but I quit in BfA)

      Anonymous

So do I, but realistically they probably didn't age very well.
It'd be nice to have an Elin spiritual successor that gets everything right and has a good context to be played in, I miss TERA's actual gameplay too, it's impossible for me to go back and play WoW based MMOs after.
If only TERA was managed better, it's like they expected it to die and were surprised when it didn't and had no clue how to run it after.

        Anonymous

I mean, it did die. It failed completely fricking horribly, and they had to scramble very very very hard to adapt it to f2p because it was just bleeding money as a p2p game. That it lived on as a rambling shambling corpse is pretty much solely due to the coomers going so hard on elin cosmetics.
TERA 2 is probably going to capitalize even harder on what they've learned actually sells, for better or worse.

          Anonymous

I mean, I wouldn't complain about a game being funded by more and more outrageous Elin cosmetics in the vein of how PoE is sustained.
My wallet would probably suffer though.

            Anonymous

I mean, I don't have issue with the cosmetics, but I'd put money on egregious "events" to unlock single outfits. "Buy $25 season pass with ultimate reward of outfit!" and then you have to spend like $25 extra to boost up to the level you need to get it unless you grind for 20 hours every day. That sorta shit. For a single outfit.

              Anonymous

              Yeah, that sounds like shit.

              >I wouldn't complain about a game being funded by more and more outrageous Elin cosmetics
As someone who plays PSO2, dear god no.
I would actively buy a sub over dealing with gatcha based outfits.
That game really taught me that F2P end up being more expensive

              >That game really taught me that F2P end up being more expensive
Generally, yeah, but outfits can be fine if implemented well and it'd be a way for a developer to sell fanservice and sex that shows that sort of thing isn't bad.
I'd argue the pros outweigh the cons by a lot.

I mean, "tera 2" was debunked as not in development ever in 2018 or so, bluehole made project EXA, which eventually evolved into Elyon, that MMO that launched in 2021 then died in late 2022, it was basically a successor to TERA but plagued with the same bullshit RNG enhancements, timegating on timegating on timegating on timegating, and other standard modern MMO fare with nothing to really set it apart or draw players. They even removed elin as a race, they tried to overcute the popori analog (the ein), but obviously, and I don't think anyone woudl deny this, elin carried TERA on their back.

I've been wanting to try that out for awhile, with that anime I assumed it would be really going hard atm but there is literally no real boost to its playerbase.
At this point I think the game is too unwelcoming to get into as a new players, I tried watching as guide just to check it out and it seemed all over the place.

      Anonymous

Honestly the big retooling they do every year makes it pretty neat to go try when they do.
Also if you ever played the asian versions, they recently merged all servers to one giga-server, so if you live in SEA or japan or korea I'd recommend giving it a try (cause it's very populous right now, since it has 3 regions worth of players, and a LOT more new players because gigaservers always draw attention.
Unfortunately the game is so instanced it mostly just means faster matchmaking queues, and towns/bazaar areas are populated.

NA tree of savior is dead as shit though, sadly.

Menma if you're in the EU, Starscape if you're in NA. If you're spanish speaking, teraCZ.

Menma is pretty much the best, it's got a pretty sizable playerbase, and a LOT of pvp rebalancing, and heavy focus on pvp. It also has insta-70 scrolls so you can avoid the leveling that the game unfortunately adopted.

      Anonymous

I tried the biggest one and it seems legit. It apparently has some P2W stuff going on but idk anything about it and from my experience: it's the best way to experience TERA in its prime. Back when BAMs were BAMs and the quest chain wasn't an instant win button to get to end-game content.

I haven't tried Starscape, what's so good about it?

I wouldn't say anything's particularly "good" about it, it''s got tuned dungeons and it's more focused around a casual/pve-oriented experience. EVERY cosmetic is free, and you earn "tickets" to buy them by playing different dungeons and they've added in a lot of modded cosmetics too.

Also it's just the largest NA population server, and cope as we might, TERA needs a decent ping. 250 ping does not make it particularly fun.

            Anonymous

I may give it a try, then.
Though, TERA really shined in world pvp. We'll probably never experience it again.

              Anonymous

I agree, I just take what I can get. I've played menma a little bit and the pvp is fun but it feels too sterile, no one's just going around in murderdeathballs, it's all scheduled and organized "open world" pvp. Kinda boring. Plus the p2w as you mentioned, you can straight up buy perfect gear, and edits.

I loved the world pvp in TERA, it could have stood to be less gear based but it was fun.
I wish the game had ran better, I remember at the time larger scale stuff always ended up being awful in TERA while it was still fun.

What's the ERP scene looking like in Starscape?

                Anonymous

Dead, that scene is pretty much wholly relegated to f-list or your other hub of choice. No one ERPs in game anymore, it's pointless. There's the diehard group of in-game bawds, but even they tend to just stand around and /dance by you ingame then erp/joi in discord. The risk of banning is not worth it for people who care even the slightest bit about the game itself.

                Anonymous

And I don't mean that just for starscape, but MMOs on the whole. You won't find much ingame ERP anywhere.

Yeah, the end of the closed beta when everyone had basically the same gear and engaged in HUGE GvGs to the point servers started lagging was peak MMO fun.

    Toontown Rewritten

      Anonymous

I can't in good faith support rewritten after that bullshit about the lead devs purposefully holding documents the original developers gave to be distributed to the community. Hundreds of pages of planned content upcoming, and old content that was cut/scrapped before the shutdown, and they hoard it all and release it as "new updates". Thankfully corporate clash decided to strike out. Wish it had more players.

Is CC actually good? I haven't checked it out at all because it looks kind of ugly but I guess that's kind of a weird issue to have with a 20 year old game

          Anonymous

It's ugly because it relies on community input and talent for creating and designing the new content. You're right though it is ugly, don't feel bad about that kek.
It's basically "chocolate" to rewritten's "vanilla". Lots of QoL, HUGE rebalancing, new gag tracks, new HQs and bosses and puzzles. It's worth a try if you're bored one weekend. It also runs a lot better than rewritten, way less server bullshit, way less crashes, way less nonsense, though if I'm being frank, they're both pretty good nowadays.

Kind of both. It's one of those things that I'll play religiously for a month and then forget about for two years. The gameplay is somewhat similar to Runescape, i.e. loads of grinding and not much substance, the substance being buggy racing minigames, mini golfing, puzzles, or boss "fights" that you have to do another 100 times to "progress" and you use the same combination of gags every time

My friend got me to try SWG on a private server. And I ended up liking it a lot more than modern MMOs. But it also got reset every 6 months so there was no point continuing to play it.

I'd really like a modern MMO with some of SWG ideas, as well as some RO ideas. But with updated combat and UI.

      Anonymous

SWG is something I have a hard time reconciling. The older SWGEMU based, pre-cu servers give me the hit of nostalgia I want, and provide a rewarding, fulfilling sense of progression, but there's so much bullshit like all the grinding you need to do on the professions (fricking entertainer) to get force sensitive chars.

And then there's the modern, end-of-service based servers, that jedi's just something you choose right at the start, there's pretty much no reason to touch most of the professions, and shit got weird. I guess swg just isn't popular enough for one big server, plus if it got too big, disney would probably slap it down. I'm hopeful that the star wars MMO disney has ubisoft making (I know...) will be not completely horrible.

One of my friends tried to get me into Guild Wars 2 and... it's just like WoW. What's the difference?

gw2 is mostly for people who wanted a more heavy story focus, but ff14 kind of filled that niche, better than GW2 did, at that.

        >gw2 is mostly for people who wanted a more heavy story focus, but ff14 kind of filled that niche, better than GW2 did, at that.
        I see, thanks.

          Anonymous

I played GW2 from day 1 up through the f2p launch, mostly because I played gw1 and just saw it natural (it wasn't, and most people I played with quit after a month), and they marketed it with a lot of things like the "trinity-free combat", but there are still classed characters, just not to the extent most would expect, I suppose. The open world events were neat, but RIFT did them first to that extent, the gvg/rvr stuff was well intentioned but suffered significant balance troubles because there was no strict classes, it basically just became meta to participate in the pvp elements by picking the "good classes" and that was it. So, what was left? The story. It was admittedly actually pretty cool early on, and it lets you play the story with friends, simultaneously, like, you both play it at once. That's not anything new nowadays but in 2012 I thought it was wild.
But as time went on, the story became the SOLE focus, the game took a backseat, and everything was about those tiny story drops, the "living world stories" and new expansions and eh.
