Those aren't arbitrary though, they're somewhat inspired in real plants/fruits with thorns. It still looks an organic feature.

It's an average that doesn't really represent anything that actually exists. There are a lot of round sinnoh pokemon, and a lot of spiky sinnoh pokemon, but there are no round and spiky sinnoh pokemon.
