can u do one for all of the gens?
im playing the open world emerald hack right now and man hoenn's map feels so good. so much open space and smaller hidden paths. i dunno how much of that is due to the open nature of the romhack though. i just played hgss/bw2 and man the routes in those games feel so claustrophobic in comparison.
kanto in particular holy frick. i think people give it a pass because that region is a lot less hand holdy on where to go but once you do it's just a straight line

the map they drew for kalos sucks, the unova one was ehh too but it at least kept all the important landmarks

also the regions after this are really their own thing departed from the original map design philosophy so im not doing them
alola is too backtracky and all over the place over small areas for the map to make any sense
                galar is a straight line
and i dont even know anything about paldea

Paldea is a big circle that you can "do in any order" with three main objectives:
                1. gyms
                2. team star
                3. dying dog dinners
however because there is no scaling gym leaders/objectives you are given two options:

                >option 1
ignore level of objectives and just do them in a clockwise or counterclockwise order.
which means by the time you get one side of the map done, you are wayyyy overleveled for the other side of the map.
i had enough left over exp to level an entire other team i switched to.

pic related was more or less what i did, i don't remember where the team star / dog missions were but assume i did them on the way. switched teams after alfornada

                >option 2
actually do everything in level order which means you are still going to be overleveled but the route you take ends up looking like you're rimming an butthole swiping back and forth around the map from on end to another

Explains the whole classes thing. I think they expected you to make frequent stops at Mesagoza while crossing from one side to the next.

This is why these regions are sexy
Look at all those directions to enter and leave towns or areas of interest.
vs the other regioms where you generally have one big hub city where everything connects and
Then basically big long routes with towns to break the monotony

for johto its maybe slightly more intelligible
also im assuming the player does not use fly

Looking at this map, it really bugs me how, firstly, the remakes fricked it up by adding "convenient" teleports with npcs so toddlers don't get lost, when the region is so nicely built around looping near damn perfectly as is.
But also, look at the second half. What happened?

pwt has every champion and at no time does it focus on kanto
The first champion to appear in the post game is Cynthia
It also has reference to almost all regions
most of dex is extremely different hydraigon darmanitar zoroark volcalona gothitel and much more and even what they look like has enough differences you are moronic

Wow, the two most widely recognized Pokemon get very small cameos, definitely the same as all the Kalos shilling.
PWT references more than just Kanto, because the series has a history beyond just KANTOOOO
The vast majority of the ex is not knockoffs at all. They mostly fill same archetypes because you want to have those archetypes in the game, but they're also very derivative in most cases.

It saddled me with 2 losers who kinda had their own lives instead of 4+ losers who have no personality aside from getting beaten in pokemon battles by MC-kun

I hate BW2s rival but I'll take him over Hop, or any of those losers from XY and SM

      SM defense squad

hau serves some story function at least since he is there to basically give dialogue for the MC as he's there in most story beats.
he has his own small arc about growing and because of this i think out of any rival he feels the most like the MC's best friend.
lillie has the most true character development out of any pokemon rival and dare i say ANY character. i cannot think of another character in pokemon whose personality and arc does NOT revolve around pokemon. she is a jrpg character trapped in a pokemon game.

      gladion sux lol

Lilie literally the reason why she escapes is to protect a pokemon the only parts of the development are super artificial and her entire plot is mom villainously evil remove hau and nothing changes the same for gladion at least hugh has his own reasons and is part of the theme who is right about the pokemon, the same thing, cheren and bianca

I hate SM's cast because they are stand-ins for my character who is also there any way, they just don't matter. Hau and Lillie go on my adventure for me and I just sat there gobsmacked until they need someone to win a battle.

BW introduced the idea of annoying friends that follow you, not to test you, but because they're just going the same way, but in BW the losers grow up and make something of themselves. Their arcs have actual conclusions.
Serena, Hau, Hop, Gladion, Marnie, none of them amount to anything but losing a battle to you just enough to abandon their dreams.

They succeeded in being different, felt like a more serious game, as if they were trying to head in a different direction. It finally added a Hard Mode, and it had good qol improvements that didn't break the game as they do now. Making it so you could reuse Repels without having to open the bag again is the example of a good change; being able to access your boxes while in routes is an example of a bad change that breaks the game.

Yeah I loved how different the game felt when I beat the 8 gym leaders and went to Victory Road and fought the Elite 4 again

    The serious plot
The darkest take on morality and on putting chatolics as a "le bad" team

That's it, and even then its only slightly above team flare, and gen 7 also mentions the same topics in a much lesser form

Oh one last thing i can think of is a the abyssal ruins type of labyrinth, with the hidden but translatable text, that was pretty genius and such things havent been there after gen 5, though its also true that you get to MEET the ancient king in kalos, while in unova its just told about in post-game hidden texts that needs community work to be translated, so while very cool, its also only slightly relevant

Don't care, there were more good designs in gen 5 than designs period in gen 6+.

Difficulty, presentation, characters, new Pokemon, last gen to have Sprites instead of bad 3D models, music.
Every game after Gen 5 has been lower quality in almost every way.
The only thing I dislike about Gen5 is lack of Battle Frontier, but they have similar things. Subway, Black City/White Forest, PWT.

The only good thing about some of the modern games is some of the new items, abilites, and attacks.
Rarely do new gens have characters or Pokemon worth a damn, but the good ones are very good.
Gen 6 and Gen 8 killed my interest in the series. Skipped 7 entirely because of how much I dislike XY
