What do you call this artstyle?

I've heard lots of people say typical shit like "deviantart cringe" or whatever, but is there an actual term for it? I quite like the art is Dust and Elysian tail, but so many people seem to think of it as being bad or whatever.

It kinda reminds me early 2000's internet stuff for some reason.

Webcomic style like said. And it's reminiscent of TwoKinds.
        >two main characters share the same colors

It's like, budget Neopets art or something, how strange.

        Cool guy.

Kinda blows my mind how many people say the voice acting is "bad". I quite like the voice acting and what they were going for. It was a certain style, and had a lot of effort put into it.

That's just for one scene, just a few lines, and it took so many takes to get things "just right".
Then again, I know it's all subjective, and a lot of people hate fidget's voice for example, whilst I think it's perfectly fitting.

I think a lot of people just really want to hate things that aren't what they are normally used to.

This. I was seriously impressed by the VA work in spite of the game's visuals, but the look did grow on me.

I like the anniversary comic he drew to celebrate the game.

        Soul.

Fidget is adorable. Also I really enjoyed the moments when she gets meta and just casually tells you about playing with game mechanics. It reminded me of Daxter from the Jak & Daxter games. I miss when video games had characters like that.

Twokinds has been going for like 20 years and it feels like nothing has happened. I still like it though.

          I like Slightly Damned more.

            Anonymous

I understand. Twokinds was the first webcomic I got into and was obsessed. I actually discovered Slightly Damned from Twokinds's home page becuase of a little banner ad. After reading the latter, I came to the conclusion that while Tom is technically a better artist, the writing in SD is objectively better. I think the biggest shortcoming of TK is he has too many characters to juggle.

To be fair, a hero having amnesia and being a weird world isn't exactly an original concept.

The coloring does seem more direct though. Perhaps it is a coincidence, or maybe it is a reference to twokinds, or possibly an unconscious choice based on influence he didn't know he was making.

              YES! Well, KINDA OF!

              Spoilers for the game below.

"Cassius was the most trusted elite assassin who worked closely with General Gaius, exterminating Moonbloods at Gaius' command. His job also involved assassinating the Warmbloods who assisted the Moonbloods in any form. General Gaius and Cassius often labeled them as "Moonblood Sympathizers."

Prior to the game timeline, Baron Kane revealed the location of a Moonblood Sympathizer village hidden in the Blackmoor Mountains. Cassius and Gaius' army were ordered to storm Zeplich Village, killing everyone except Ginger, who somehow survived the attack and fled to Aurora Village. Cassius was confronted by the angered Jin, Ginger's brother, and the two battled, killing each other simultaneously with their souls intertwining in death. "

I never felt it was bad on either fronts. I mean, I'm not saying it was some superbly written novella or anything like that, but I never felt there was anything wrong with it. It had some pretty good lines, some nice humor, etc.

I had two or three problems with the game.

First is that it just cuts short and ends. You've got some plot about finding runes or something, and they you're suddenly fighting the army and kill the general. Yes, they ran out of time and budget and needed to wrap it up unexpectedly, but that doesn't make the ending better.
The second is combat. It has a decent parry system which you basically never need to use because early fights can be easily beaten with dash away-dash attack and later fights you can just spam lightning on everything. So you never got to really practice parrying unless you liked facetanking fights and were never good at it when the situation actually came up.
The third was the sorta-flying mechanic, although I don't really know if that was intended to be used for much beyond the occasional hidden thing to find.

I thought the art was good and the voice acting fine.

There's no popularly recognized term for it no.
As for why people think it's bad, it's partly due to association (let's not lie here, 99 percent of the time when you see that artstyle, it's because you're looking at furry porn).
I would argue it's the vaguely neotenous, anime-esque faces combined with implicitly sexualized character designs in the art that draws this association.
You can't tell me that the creature you posted needed to have thighs like that, nor did it need to be naked.

Basically, it's because they can tell that the person who drew the furry creatures in the game also wants to frick the furry creatures in the game.

          Making a roguelike
It's fulfilling, but I know I'm making something no one will really enjoy unless I go full roguelike Mozart and make something like Dwarf Fortress.
And even my current project is on hiatus because I'm so lacking in creativity I'm struggling to think of a direction to take it that isn't generic D&D fantasy roguelike.

I don't think the dude is someone who draws a lot or whatever. They just wanted to make some characters, which turned into a story, that turned into a game, and that was enough for them.

To be honest, I quite like the style, and I don't really think it needs to go any further, or that being "better" would really have much of an impact on the feeling it evokes in me. That's all subjective though.

I can understand the sentiment, but you're basically just sinking time and effort into something that could easily be done in a better, nicer, more efficient way. At some point this isn't just a stylistic or personal choice, but rather celebrating inefficiency.

I read 3 pages of Uberquest and lost interest.

That's close enough for me. And speak of the devil, Markipliers brother drew it.

If you're asking about the artstyle meaning the shading or whatever, it is indeed the kind they use on deviantart the most. It's basically two level cel shading. If you're asking what the art style is meaning the way the characters are designed, it's called Kemono. And originates in Japan. But because of the different shading style, and a number of other design decisions, it's easy to spot when it doesn't come to Japan.

Can someone explain this to me.
Way back in the early 2000s, I came across his website. It blew my mind how they could animate and such and do all that stuff with the limited computing power and budgets at the time. I was younger then, didn't understand all the lore behind Dust and what Dean was doing, I just saw cute mouse girl and waited for the day this movie would come out.

Then the video game was released years later and...no Bonnie. But it still had the Elysian Tail branding. I don't even remember Fidget being in the early animated shorts I saw on his website.

Well said. Technology can advance until we reach the stars, but the reason people aren't as creative as they used to be isn't a tech or skill limitation, but an attitude limitation. People don't want to make stuff for the same reasons they used to back then.

Yeah, it's a real shame. I've even tried explaining the idea of creating something as a fun hobby, and I've seen anons reply with "Why bother wasting your time if you can't make money with it" while shitposting on Ganker. I really hope I was being trolled because I don't want to acknowledge that I share a site with these "people".

In the past it was practically impossible to get paid for what you were doing, but now you can get paid for sitting on your ass and playing video games. If someone said you could be earning money for just doing what you were going to do anyway, wouldn't you feel stupid for not trying to get money?

                Anonymous

Turning hobbies into something you get paid for sounds great but sometimes its dilutes the final product, because people get lazy. Its easier to put in the bare minimum needed and still get paid.
The monetization of hobbies is actually kinda sad. Everyone does it now. Everyone wants your eyes on their videos. Merch, so many fricking people have merch now! Gib me monies!!! With peoples main jobs sucking with pay stagnating and rising costs everywhere, its no wonder people need to try making money of their everyday lives - they arent making ends meet without it.
Do you want to always be "on", anon? Always filmed for the sake of a buck? You wanna live the real Truman Show? Wanna have it all fall apart the second you do something wrong? Shit shit sucks now.

                Anonymous

Art, and creativity will always be at odds with monetization. Because a profit-motive will always lead to "efficiency" and speed as opposed to quality that's subject to the ebbs and flows of one's creative juices. But you initially misdiagnosed the problem. The real problem as you wrote later on is the fact that artists MUST appeal to the trends and desires of their paymasters otherwise they don't get to live. I guarantee you'd see a lot more passion projects if artists didn't have to worry about losing their house or health insurance.

Genuinely one of the best little animations you could find on a ton of flash sites back in the day, and yeah. The dude never went onto do anything. Made a bunch of WIP short posts and little animations here and there, then just... stopped. Years ago. Decent chance they are just dead.

I never heard of this till now. Thanks for sharing anon its so cool. Loved the gun part here. You could always search his name online see if anything comes up.

DUDE I FRICKING LOVE DENDYN DYNASTIES.

I've saved several copies of it, flash and mp4 and stuff and whatever else. Watch it every now and then. Still fricking incredible.

          >I've saved several copies of it, flash and mp4
Can you post them on catbox or something? I remember downloading swfs and exes back in the day for Flash. Man I wish I could go back.

There's an easier way. His devient art page has all his animations over the years. They don't look like animations from the thumbnails, but they are. Go on the page, and click the little download button underneath.

            https://www.deviantart.com/ryanide/art/Dendyn-Dynasties-22718958

            There's one as an example.

Even easier was is to just download flashpoint and use that to play the file. Extremely great tool, that one.

If you're not a completely pessemistic butthole, then you could simply look back on it as being a fun game if nothing revolutionary, and something that clearly had a lot of work and passion put into that, that also resonates more strongly with certain people for specific reasons, be that the music, the world, or just the cute anthro characters.

Dust isn't incredible, but if you enjoy what it's going for, it's some of the best there is.

Dust was made because the dev won a contest made by Microsoft where the winner would have gotten funding for a game that would be published on Xbox live Arcade. Maybe the game just didn't reach an income that would have justified the dev to make more, because 16k review isn't that much.

Shovel Knight only has 12k reviews despite only coming out a mere year later and being a much lauded success that received 3 free expansions. You're coping and moronic. Simple as.

                Anonymous

The estimated ratio of players/review is something like 30-100. 16k reviews is plenty unless you are comparing it to AAA releases.

                Anonymous

It won a contest that gave the project enough funding for the solo dev to make something of relatively good quality. I don't know how much funding it was but even if it received 100k it was enough for the dev to work on it full time for a certain amount but if the game managed to make the same amount or slightly more there's simply no reason to continue working on another game. Because it's too much effort for one person and certainly the game did not made enough to hire more people.

I'd just say Flash, I guess. Flash is an extremely specific style on its own, and very recognizable if you know how to differentiate it. It's like a western style that's trying hard to emulate eastern styles, but obviously held back either by limitations with the program or by the artist themselves. Old Newgrounds and the Duel Masters game for PS2 is usually what I think of. It came from an era of innocence.

The combat is not only incredibly braindead consisting of spamming the same aoe-mega-btfo moves for 922 hours against damage sponge enemies that pose no threat, once every half an hour you get hit once and get one-shot. The characters and plot are the ultimate definition of cringe. Fidget started as insanely obnoxious and made me want tk kill myself, but everything else was so bad that she looped around to being the most pleasant character in the game. The regions arent even connected, you just open a map and TP to each region. The unlockable movement abilities are used solely to access these side nooks that require a specific scripted movement ability to cross which are constantly placed in the early game to blueball you

Stuff like Terrie Smith and all those pen & paper VCL artists.

Looks Disney-ish. Pretty sure this style is more popular nowadays than the 2000's pseudo weeb furry.

I don't see such style very often anymore. Nowadays the most influence people have is cheap calart from shitty nu cartoon network garbage.

              >search DeviantArt for "furry"
              >The entire first couple of pages of results are just AI porn
Grim. Anyway, when filtering AI out this is one of the first results. You can see it takes more from the early Disney look than anything else. I think Zootopia had a hand in bringing that style back. There are still some super "kemono" looking furry artists out there that are heavily anime looking, but the 2000's Flash weeb look is almost entirely gone.

That kind of style was influenced by Disney but not the Disney you have today with 3D movie but actually the 2D era Disney where you can clearly see it's influence over this kind of art where also Dust was probably influenced. But Disney ditched 2D for quite a while now and even movies like Zootopia don't have the same kind if influence.
That kind of Disney art you refer was just a result of old 2D Disney which still today keep some momentum but it's slowly dying just like Disney itself.

The key difference is pencil drawing vs digital. The old school furgays had very traditional construction techniques and therefore the art has a much more 'classical' style for shapes and shading versus the highly edited digital art of today.

There is a good documentary showing the pre internet into internet transition:
