What do you consider the "best" RTS

There's a massive amount of RTS games that all vary in style and substance but what do you personally consider the best of the genre, while you can say something like Warcraft 3 is the best due to it's robust custom map selection or something like Total Anihilation for it's (for the time) technical marvel, I believe Red Alert 2 has a near perfect balace of fun, style, and ease to pick up and play while still being complex enough for more strategic play.

I prefer Starcraft for its amount of gameplay elements, abilities and rock-paper-scissor balance. I love stuff like build nukes, train ghosts, put them into transport, cast shield on the transport to breach through anti air chokepoints, unload, cast stealth, make boom. RA2 is still mostly a tank spam game with specific abilites like IFV turret swap or tesla coil charge feeling like afterthoughts. That being said, I only started playing SC fairly recently on a very casual level. I've been team Westwood since Dune II. Love Red Alert 1 the most.

WC3 for gameplay. Red Alert 2 for story.

there are so many good rts game out there OP and also many more that i havent played yet. i would say Starcraft Brood War and Warcraft 3 left the highest impression on me. Also World in Conflict for an epic story and atmosphere. there are other who are also very good. Homeworld, Star trek Armada 1 nad 2 and a few others but those are personal favourites maybe not the ''best''.

Barely retro in my opinion, but 2004 so it fits the rules of this board; I’ve always liked Dawn of War due to the resource system.

RTS is such a dead genre that pretty much anything before SC2 could be considered retro.
Dawn of War and Company of Heroes are the best thing relic ever did and it's a shame every single thing they made after was a trashfire

Mostly agree but Age of Empires 4 was pretty good

First, thanks for a rts thread to buoy us in the sea of shitposting on this board.

        >best rts
Warcraft 3, no question. It was a huge leap forward in play style, storytelling, and graphics back in 2002. Having four distinct races with unique buffs and attributes was a big deal then, since most were following the formula of just reskinning generic unit types for each “race.” Having hero units as the centerpiece was cool and not a dynamic I’d really experienced before then. I definitely went back to WC3 more than any other rts, have prob replayed it through on max difficulty 15x. It has a big place in my memory of those times.

Yes, unfortunately. It’s the quintessential “retro” genre now and doesn’t fit into the brave new world of gaming business models.

I'm a die hard C&C guy but man Warcraft 3 was special. there was a big forest next to the house I grew up in, and it wasn't hard to imagine that it was filled with night elves and magical ruins

That’s a great image. WC3 was definitely fuel for one’s imagination.

Can some explain the appeal of Warcraft 3, I really liked Warcraft 2 but 3 just doesn't have the same appeal for me. The story and single player was fun but I never really enjoyed playing the multiplayer even starcraft was more enjoyable in MP. Was it just custom maps or am I completely missing something?

mp in WC3 was all about the custom maps, most ladder matches/tournaments were really predictable and came down to who could do a hero rush or some other cheez fastest. I played a lot of ladder and was decently ranked in high school—it got boring af. Same tactics all the time, very few endgames. FFAs or team matches could be better, especially if you played with people you knew, since we still had LAN then. However, I have replayed the single player many times, that’s where the games earned its legend status.

Also, it had pretty impressive staying power in terms of mp popularity. Battle.net was always clogged to the max when TFT came out in 2003. I was then going into my second year of hs, and there was a smaller yet still large number of WC3 players on there in 2010. Main reason it dropped off was Blizz stopped patching, and then the reforged debacle that we all know about happened.

RA2 is entry-tier. SC is gooclick shit. It's like saying Half-Life 2 and Halo are the best FPS games.

Brood War: undisputed competitive 1v1 RTS king. UMS severely underrated, I’ve probably spent thousands of hours playing Turret D/Sunken D/MSF with friends
War3: Best custom map editor, custom games, 2v2 gameplay
C&C: Easiest series to just pick up and play
Empire Earth: Absolute best campaign mode out of any retro RTS. Multiplayer was pretty good back in the day but good luck getting a match going now

I've got Spellforce 1, Warlords Battlecry 3 and Tzar, which RTS-RPG campaign should i play first? i got BTFO on the 4th or 5th Tzar mission last time i played it, Someone told me that there were some differences between the FX and GoG versions so maybe that bumped up the difficulty, i'm not fond of risk style campaigns but i still like WB3.

I love Empire Earth, i don't feel the same way towards its expansion pack tho, feels more like a mission pack with how little the space age adds.

    (OP)
I'd readily say AoM, I think it simplifies the whole Age of Empires gameplay in a really good way (I mean, who needs rocks? gold ftw) and it's most fun to play for me, along with factions, etc. and I never really got into non-AoE to compare.
An honorary mention to Crusader Kingdoms II, its unusual diplomacy/spy options are pretty unique when put against AoE-likes, maybe a stratsgay would like it.

    Objectively?
    Starcraft, AoE2, C&C:TS.

    Subjectively?
    Freaking Homeworld.

c&c3 Kane's Wrath with the 1.02+ fan patch is probably pretty damn near perfect. I love how good the controls are for microing a large mass of armies.

I know it's probably even technically objectively demonstrably not the absolute best RTS but Red Alert 2 will always be the best for me.
