I keep trying to play adventure mode and I’ll make a character, get a quest, and the npc will be like “there are bandits to the north!!!” And then I’ll walk north for 20 minutes to an hour, find nothing, and give up. Is this shit bugged? Do they not take distance into account when you ask for work?

It's okay, unfortunately marred by the developer being stupid and focusing literally all his effort on irrelevant, uninteresting fluff bullshit (no, descriptions of procedurally generated songs are not actually interesting in the slightest) instead of actual gameplay features or performance optimizations.
The game is also really easy for the most part. Forts can survive entirely off a 5x5 plump helmet farm that you can set up seconds into a new embark, a single drawbridge will make your fortress impenetrable, and a military that's allowed to train any more than not at all will easily dispatch anything that's not literally unkillable or has some kind of lethal dust attack.

Completely obliterated by Rimworld. All those years DF gays hyped the game. They shitposted in Rimworld threads for decade. And yet when DF was released on steam...the king become naked. I really expected some sort of advanced fantasy world simulation but it seems like DF devs spent decade doing nothing. All it has is Z levels and setting. That's it.
im actually very annoyed how fricking easy this game is, i have to go far out of the normal settings and manually tinker with the numbers to turn it in to something resembling the shit people had been meming about this game for years
you have to be a complete moron to die to any of the normal dangers in this game
just fricking food alone >you can forage in most biomes >you can fish >farming is easy >beekeeping doesnt require anything >fricking animals doesnt need food or water most of them dont even need grass, its an endless source of food for free
i can honestly say that rimworld is a much more hardcore game than dwarf fortress
ive actually been thinking about disabling hostile factions in rim and seeing how would it affect the gameplay. Pretty sure it will still be challenging
with even less features than now and that terrible ui? ehh
if people still played it im sure someone would have made a mod to turn the experience in to something more hardcore but alas

Good gameplay, but it looks like shit and it plays like shit. It needs about 10,000 graphical and UI updates until is perfectly playable.
I deleted my pirated test copy and will check it out again in a few years.
Gonna keep playing v0.47.05 and older, not a fan of the new interface.

Dwarf fortress is a world simulator, and rimworld is a tower defense, they have different design goals to start with.
