I just downloaded Mahjong Souls 3 days ago, suddenly a thread about it on Ganker. Is this like loading cars into the cache in GTA?

Also how do I unlock other characters?

Buy them from the slot machine
good luck it costs about 300$ to unlock a character if you're unlucky

All I can say is that I hate every time I see a game called "Mahjong" and find out that it is Solitaire or Shangai.

I would like to see a Mahjong game in english to more or less understand how it is played.

      Gotta look up Riichi Mahjong.
      >I would like to see a Mahjong game in english to more or less understand how it is played.
Mahjong Soul is good for beginners. It has an ok tutorial, visual aids and hands are translated to English ie. Tanyao -> All Simples. You can access hands from in-game at any moment. Yakuza doesn't teach you jack.

I have played mahjong for years, but I still don't know how to play it.
I only know the basics like discard efficiently, discard safe tiles, etc.
But I have no idea how to play it such that I can see through enemies hand and know what yaku they are aiming for, and even pinpoint which few tiles they are waiting.
Maybe that only happens in manga and I'm overthinking it.

      Anonymous

      TL;DR: Triplets.
If they discard a 2 of pin, it's likely because they completed a triplet or attained a better wait, for example they have a 2, 4 pin and pull a 5. They dump the 2 so their wait is 3, 6. Or if you see almost no outside tiles (1, 9, wind, dragons mainly, 2, 3, 7, 8 secondarily), they're going for an all outside hand in which case discarding a 2 means they either finished a triple of 1, 2, 3, or a pair/triplet or 1s.
If someone is discarding (relevant) Winds or Dragons past the first row, they're either moronic or actively pushing their hand and likely close to finish. This is important cause you will get dama'd occasionally (winning hand with no open tiles or Riichii).

        >But I have no idea how to play it such that I can see through enemies hand and know what yaku they are aiming for
Check what you can see ie. their discards and calls. Are they only discarding winds/dragons/terminals? Likely rushing an all simples hand. Are they discarding only sou and man? Probably going for a flush. Are they only calling a certain suit? Probably going for a flush of that suit. Sometimes you'll get ron'd early and there's nothing you can do about that. Mahjong is a game that deal with probability and averages so as long as you deal-in as little as possible you'll climb higher than the other players eventually.

It's impossible for me to understand all that when everything is happening constantly, and there's also 3 (THREE) players to keep track of.

You just get used to it over time

You have 4 seconds + everyone else's turns to process it. If you take it tile by tile, it's not that bad. You just have to actually try.

I forgot to mention that meanwhile, I also need the time to think about my hand.
So I actually have to think about 4 player's hand at the same time.
My dumb brain just can't handle such a large amount of complicated calculations.

Your hand is often the easiest part though.

If the gay to your right has called a triple of dora tiles or has called riichii you better be warier of that gay than the other two. It's better to get ron'd by some shit 1k hand than the 12k one you probably won't be able to come back from.

Be wary of one person and analyze what he had discarded?
That's the kind of basic thing I can handle.
The thing I can't handle is, what is the guy waiting before he called for riichii?

              Anonymous

              >what is the guy waiting before he called for riichii?
Discard what he has discarded: 100% safe. If there are three wind/honor tiles discarded the fourth one is 100% safe. I never understood suji and kabe but those tactics exist as well.

There are too many factors. How many other players are in Riichi? Is it risky from what you're able to see? Is your hand worth 8k+? Are you sitting on a good wait or a bad wait? Are you in fourth place and way behind the other players?

There's a chance it will have another collab, like with Saki.
Speaking of Saki, ecchi is the worst part of the manga and I fricking hate how the breasts keep balooning up, Nodoka and Awai were normal before. Saki might be one of the only manga where the anime is better simply because the anime is not ecchi and literally has more content.
