It makes me wonder why they took so long. Best explanation I've heard was that Daisy and Wario were created by a different development team, and so the mainline Mario guys won't (normally) touch them. Was it out of some weird respect, or dislike of that team's contributions.

Yes, it's exactly this. They wouldn't want people using *their* characters without their own permission, so they opt to not use other teams' characters out of that same respect. Same goes for why DK Jungle Beat featured none of Rare's iconography: they thought they were being respectful.
Probably good feedback from Smash and the movie so they decided to go for it.

Nintendo wanted two playable princesses, Rosalina had her chance in 3DW, and they realized Peachette was a mistake

Even aside from that Peachette was a real weird idea. Toadette is playable now, but she also becomes a clone of another character through a powerup that only works for her. Kind of a mess.

Genuinely who even wants to play as Toad? When NSMB Wii came out, my two younger brothers would fight amongst themselves who would play Luigi, because neither of them wanted to play as Toad.
It’s a good thing they made Daisy and Peach playable. I’d rather play as them than as blue Toad and yellow Toad.

It's like with TMNT or MLP, every kid will have a favourite based on personality even though the character designs are all similar. I can see Daisy being featured more alongside Peach and Rosalina

That's what the 3D Mario game they're sitting on is for. Plus they're probably keeping the Switch alive as long as possible. They don't want another Pii U situation. But dear god we need that new hardware.

Who knows. I’m glad daisy fans got their wish after smash. She got her turn to feel dire flowers burn without rosalina taking all her rightful earned roles. She’s finally that girl.
I guess it would have been weird to theme an entire game around flowers and NOT feature her?
Then again, a lot of people thought it was weird for NSMB 2 to be entirely centered around Gold Coins and to NOT feature Wario.

Having Daisy as a playable character in a platformer makes more sense than Rosalina. She's been described as tomboyish and full of spirit since her debut in Super Mario Land, and she's been Peach's "Luigi" ever since Mario Tennis
I don't know what's Miyamoto's beef with using non OC donut steel in his mainline games but someone probably finally convinced him to add Daisy in the newer games or probably he got over his seething over Daisy being another female popular character other than Peach. He probably is secretly seething over Yokoi too for copying his OC I don't know.
She's a doormat character like pretty much every female character in Mario and Mario himself so it was only a matter of time, even if her priority in the bracket list is lower than someone like Toad, the reason for her not being in were just arbitrary and Nintendo probably thinking nobody gave a shit. It's nothing like Wario.
