What do you think of Burning Wheel? If you've played/run it, how did it go? I personally really like the way it approaches the different races, seems very deep and flavorful. Burning Wheel Thread.

I've read it. Well, parts of it. It looks brilliant, but also completely impossible to play.

Most games that make a lot of sense feel that way. GURPS, Burning Wheel, D&D 3.5v. The rich details make it for a great book about a hipothetic game, but trying to actually run it is so hard that no one would bother trying it nowadays when simpler, easier, effortless entertainment is always available.

I wish I was bored enough to need something as complex as this to have fun.

        >Comparing 3.5e or even GURPS to Burning Wheel
These games don't have Luke Crane there trying to encapsulate RP inside a moronic, rigid as frick frame while trying to sound like an unrivalled game designer genius. GURPS shouldn't absolutely be mentioned near BW and fricking 3.5e at least is playable and, i dare to say, fun.

I am running my third campaign in it, my first with multiple PC's, just two. It is my favorite system and basically forever changed how I look at RPG's. I play a lot of Delta Green/CoC as well and while I enjoy those games a lot, they require a ton of work to prep a scenario or a module. With BW once the initial campaign setup is established it basically GM's itself. I just consider the PC's beliefs and what interesting things might happen and not down some notes, maybe an npc or two just throwing some stats and skills down and most importantly writing down a belief or two for them. No need for detailed maps, balancing battles, or constructing a detailed mystery scenario. Yet the gameplay is still very rich and things usually go off the rails pretty quickly.

If anyone has any questions about the system I'd be happy to answer. Love me some BW.

I read some of Hot Circle because I am interested in BW derived games, but it seemed to miss a little something something from BW proper. Not sure I could clarify exactly what that is though as I didn't fully immerse myself in it. What would you say are Hot Circle's advantages over BW (other than it being simpler obviously which is not to be discounted).

It's the best game in the entire genre. I'm honestly devastated that we've ended up with most new non 5e stuff being inspired by pbta or osr instead of it

What does it bring to the table that pbta doesn't?

Great flavor. The most basic core system of mechanics is nice. That's all the good stuff I can say about it.

I think nothing about it, unless there is a thread on /tg/, where I don't even shrug, answer some random question and forget about the game as I hide the thread

It's pretty decent, but so different from d20-type and other more conventional systems that it is hard to jump straight to it from those games. I ran a campaign with it a few years back, and here are my major takeaways: characters work better when they start smaller, high-level games just don't work. The 'Fight' system is not that good for anything but a climactic duel. You'll need to hack in a means to manage brawls. The base magic system is not too great, but the systems in BW Gold are exceptional. It's superb if you want to play a LotR game too.

I fricking hate Luke Crane. BW has some redeeming qualities but it suffers from over-complexity and needs more player buy-in than the average RPG.

If the guy in your video is representative of the kings of people who dislike this game it might be worth a shot. He seems incapable of expressing his opinions without resorting to repeating the same meaningless phrases and he looks low IQ on top of it.

This dude actually said he can’t read it because all the words make his head hurt and he also doesn’t know what a bookmark is. I don’t think this game is for you little guy.

I mean, i don't really enjoy Krane writing style as well so it's kind of understandable that someone would be put off buy that, not that i have watched that yt video so i don't know the exact critique there.

I watched this vid a while ago but as with most YouTube reviews of Burning Wheel I found it lacking. IIRC this guy has not played the system.

I like the social combat system, but it feels like it was only designed for a very specific setting, where both opponents are in front on an audience and attempting to sway public opinion rather than make any attempt to sway each other.

Don’t get me wrong I love that situation, and I think Burning Wheel’s method of social combat an amazing way of adding mechanical depth to something that a players might want to engage with but is often handled with a single hand wavey dice roll in other games. But from what I’ve seen and read, it doesn’t lend itself to one on one or smaller situations, but rather the exact boundaries described in their examples.
But I haven’t had the chance of actually playing it, so if there are any anons who have played it and enjoyed that aspect of the game I’d want to hear their experience.

In my limited experience it can make players compromise when they otherwise would not, but if requires buy in to possibly concede at the start so your mileage may vary.

Definitely use one of the alternative sheets, makes the game alot more playable for Players.

      Anonymous

Gonna be real with you that is a terrible sheet for BW, not that I think the game's default one is good either. But that is not nearly enough room for skills or traits and the beliefs needed more space than the original sheet, not less.

My beef with the standard character here is that everything should be 1.25x the size but then you would need multiple sheets.

Thats why I also make use of the Slash and Burner Primer for BW, streamlines the SBIT design bloat to something more elegant in play.

          Anonymous

Fair enough anon. I haven't found the BITS in the standard game to slow things down. My players if anything want more beliefs, but I think three is the right number. That is one BW mod I have not heard of before though.
