Honestly thought the first level and third were superb. Much more fun in extreme mode though. A lot more action, and no perks. Overload 2 is nice, but the auto-level and weapon retention can make it too repetitive and make combat just a matter of keep missile and c shot, with weapon swap abuse. Extreme actually pushes you to use proper gameplay loop. Which is actually pretty deep if you git gud enough.
Sub bosses are the most fun.IMO. level 6 sucked, but its sub boss was Simon Belmont, so that was cool.
Yeah, her. Literally had no reason to be nor to look like that. It's hard to believe the same studio who did contra 4 also made this shit. If anything, it shows that the guys with talent aren't there anymore.
Makes me fear for their clock tower remake
>Literally had no reason to be nor to look like that
but there was a reason. the game takes place in an island near New Zealand, she's from some maori tribe or something.
It's a glorified boss rush with shitty muddy textures, trapped on a dead console. It'll never be in a classic Contra collection. It doesn't belong anywhere but the trash bit of 5th and 6th gen failures.
>glorified boss rush
what's wrong with that? Contra cut down real hard on the platforming sections right after super c. >shitty muddy textures
eh it fits the gritty industrial theme it was going for. I'm not a fan of the artstyle either but it isn't intolerable.
If you look past surface level stuff you'll find that it has impressive use of 3D. It is extremely dynamic, the bosses have several phases where they alternate moving between the foreground and background, changing the entire arena, brilliant area to area transition etc, it makes excellent use of the 3D space. compare that to operation galuga and you'll find that the new game has nothing of that sort. operation galuga might as been a 2D game because of how straightforward it is. It has bad artstyle due to it being 3D and also no purpose for being 3D in the first place.
If you're talking Hard Corps, yeah. It too was nothing but bosses. 3 still owned its platforming roots. Yes, Contra is a platforming, albeit one with jump 'n shoot mechanics. Galuga is a re-imagining of the first game, so of course it's a platformer. Have you also happened to notice its first and third stages resemble the ones from NES? Or even that its final few stages are basically reworks of what you get in 1 and 3? It's the closest we've gotten to a faithful followup we've had in well over a decade. Why the hell shouldn't it demand platforming from the player?
Give me more of this, and less Shattered Soldier and Neo Contra.
Only fix the bugs from the start this time WayForward.

>Why the hell shouldn't it demand platforming from the player?
I personally think that super C is the best contra game so I really like run n gun sections. this is not a flaw with the new game, it is just that it is very uninnovative. you can argue it is an homage so it is supposed to be just like the NES games but it needed more work to stand out on its own especially in the level design, boss design and music.
there is also a problem with the new game that it offers too many options with which you can cheese it like the air dash, hell the flying characters can even skip sidescrolling sections completely by hovering above the visible screen area. the vehicle sections were pretty lukewarm as well. It's not a bad game but it's just an okay game, worth a playthrough or two.

The flying perk is worthless. At this point, you shouldn't even be using perks at all. Extreme doesn't even let you. And the gameplay dynamic opens up a lot when you do more than just stick to Browny, launching missiles and c shots back to back every level.
When you improve in this game enough on your own, combat dynamics open up a lot more. You find yourself making use of everything in your arsenel.
Take perks off and it's a different game. Man you gotta give this one a second chance. I did, and I honestly don't regret sinking $40 into it because I got a lot of replay value for it. It's flawed but good.
Well, you have your opinion of it. I have mine. It all depends on what you personally get out of something. I found value in a game I was expecting to be a disaster.

>Extreme mode
I wanted to play in that from the get go but it was locked and I had to finish it in hard mode first to unlock it but by that time I just lost interest in doing another playthrough. maybe I'll try it in extreme. thanks.
Cuphead is amazing, but I find Galuga just as addicting. The artstyle overall seems a bit uglier, but boss designs of the turret boss, alien boss, the piledriver, and even the fricking drone in stage 4 are great.
It's a decent generic run n gun, but the 3d way forward aesthetic is ugly and doesn't fit the series well, boss designs aren't anything special, all the modern bells and whistles tacked on muddle the gameplay balance.
tldr s'ok/10, don't pay $40 for it.
Who gives a flying frick about some one-off character you'll probably never use? You have the Contra set and the hard corps set. What more does anyone need? Story mode was ass. Arcade and extreme is where it's at.
Contra 3 sucks. Obnoxious level design, unbalanced difficulty settings (normal is a cakewalk, hard is a frustrating mess), bosses and even popcorn enemies are massive bullet sponges, nauseating top-down stages, excessive gimmicks, and somehow the weapon swap bug was never caught in testing. One of the few 2D Contras that missed the mark.
We get it, you don't like Contra.
I'm one of the few people on this board that has actually cleared the games.
Clearing the games is not a feat when you can just beat them using konami code, setting it on easy/normal and using foreign copies. There's nothing impressive with what you said.
Come back when you've actually 1CC'd any of them, and I mean any. No konami code or fricking with the life values.
Clear implies nothing. You're some weenie who comes in to brag about beating Contra. Great accomplishment. You're not speaking from any authority.

It loses on basis of having only two characters, one of which is locked being having to finish the game. And I am not even talking about it having less stages than a single play through of HC, without counting branches.
Still a better game than Galuga.

You are one stupid frick. They fixed it with Hard Corps, Shattered Soldier, and Uprising. But this lazy mobile-tier slop reintroduces decades old exploits
You mean that they allowed for weapons to have animations that reset when another action is being performed? Yes They did. They didn't remove it because it's a legit tactic. You're mixing and match effects like missiles and black holes to abdorb projectiles.
The whole game revolves around using these combos to your adventure. Enjoy your werewolf who can nothing but slide and maybe slash. But it's a game about kicking ass and taking names with two guns in-hand.

It's not some tactical combination of weapons that synergize you moron, there is no timing or strategy to it at all, you just literally mash the weapon swap button and you will do massively more damage as you're basically firing two weapons simultaneously.

And Galuga expand it that. You can now combine different attacks lik3 reflection and black hole together, creating different effects simultaneously.
It's not always the most optimal, but you choose to collect what would be a good combo, and discard the other with an overload. Makes this technique more tactical than it originally was.
It's not a glitch. Pretty sure everyone on that team knows what weapon swap is. Unlike this anon above me.

The strategy for nearly every section is double C as spamming weapon swap makes the damage oneshot everything, and the game is full of bullet sponges otherwise. You would think something so obvious would be caught in testing but it definitely doesn't seem intentional and I think it would be considered an exploit. In any case, the weapon balance is a disaster, and the enemies have way too much HP on hard just using the weapons standard.

I've tried to 1CC it 3 times and every time I got bored at stage 2, who thought that boring, way too long autoscroller is a good idea for stage 2. Which is strange, because second "autoscroller" is much better, even if it just a giant Hard Corps jerk off moment.
No, because one of my main criticisms of Blazing Chrome is that final stage is just 3 (or even just 2, don't remember) bosses in a row.
