Chiefly, they don't. Tieflings are exceedingly rare in my campaign, and no generalizations can be made about them.
they exist somewhere in the kitchen sink owing to the fact we're using regular golarion but nobody really uses them
Why are you responding to a bait thread.
Bait threads are the pillar and soul of /tg/
Bait threads are Generals are what's left of /tg/
Random mutation tables are fun and should be included with EVERY race.
>Random mutation tables are fun
I just wish for an expanded version of the old planescape tiefling mutation tables. One that both satisfies my need for random cosmetic mutations AND ones that make tieflings sexy instead of only various flavors of ugly like the original tables did.
Wish granted!
Got one for aasimar?
Do you have one for Genasi?
No, but I can make one! Is there any specific tables you'd like to see on it?
Well, there should definitely be a section for the element of the Genasi if you don't want to do one of a specific element to begin with, and then there should be a table for some ways that their elemental influence can manifest in their appearances, abilities, and elemental effects that can happen around them, a bit like the Tiefling example upthread that I assume that you were the one to post. I'm just not sure if it would work better if there was a separate section for each element a Tiefling can be or if there should be one list with things like "Genasi has hair made of (insert element here)", what say you? Have another Tiefling/Genasi pic as thanks for the offer!
Thanks! What kind of elements are you thinking we should include in it? Just the main four, or something more adventurous? Also, do you have any specific ideas for abilities they should have, besides the typical resistance/cantrip/etc.?
NAYRT but I say go wild and add a whole variety of different elements.
Different guy, but I’d love to see a Genasi table!
Oh, this is exactly what I need. This is really good.
Anon, it's going to LOOK like I'm stealing this chart for my own use, but thats only because I'm fricking stealing this chart for my own use
I like tieflings as henchmen and sidekicks, but they always have a place at the table if they're from human lines. If I need elven or orcish tieflings, I'll grab the fey'ri or tanarruk from the 3e FR books.
Everyone hates them and thinks they are shitty. (Which they are)
I wonder if her pubes are white too
How could we make them LESS shitty then?
>cue butthole responding with "a headstone"
You won't satisfy the anti-tiefling anon. When he runs out of tieflings to complain about, he'll move to half-orcs and then to something else.
You could stop pushing saabatean frankism into our hobbies with your inversive bullshit
I'd like to see some Tieflings coming together to create their own kingdom, a place where they can live without being outcastes.
Banning Tieflings (and all other non-core races) was the best move I ever made as a DM, cringe levels dropped massively as I was able deny people's dumb freakshit and copy-paste builds.
Tieflings are core thoughbeit
nope, not in this picture (and I go back and forth on half-orcs, no reason, just dont like them)
Based 3.5 enjoyer
3.0. 3.5 was a huge step down, it’s 3 but with more redditors.
I don't like what they did to Dryads when they upgraded to 3.5
*downgraded
C-lister one-use pump and dump monsters don’t matter btw. Which is all dryads could ever be. It’s a moral and ethical imperative to spray Agent Orange on trees that think they can be people.
ok, boomer
Naw, a boomer wouldve posted this
Ah, such beautiful artwork. Things truly were better back in the day in every way.
Half orc just having downs
I hate the fact that Halflings are shorter than Gnomes. like Gnomes are supposed to be small bearded things that is squating in your garden so why the frick are they so tall?
Never will be. And 5thcucks don’t get a say.
>as a DM, cringe levels dropped massively
>massively
They all left, didn't they?
That was the point dumbass
Yep. Now I only do solo RPs or my furry hyper giantess vore ERP.
In my setting there was an event called the Great Departure, where all beings divine and infernal above the level of Aasimar/Tieflings returned to their home planes and took a binding vow not to interact directly with the material realm. This leaves Tieflings as the closest go-betweens to the hells, and some do communicate with demons who scheme to circumvent their promise's limitations.
Would make good sorceress
GOOD
MORNING
SIR
I'm starting a 5e campaign tomorrow, and Tieflings are a big proportion of the people going north for a 'gold rush'. A lot of them are moving north because of discrimination and a lot of Tieflings are criminals.
the nobility of one of the five human kingdoms forming the human empire is mostly Tieflings descended from devil cultist conquerors. Other than that Tieflings are rare but not unheard of, mostly the result of cultist practices, curses or major sin.
>What do you think of Tieflings /tg/?
I think they are an alright fantasy race.
THE TYPICAL TIEFLING PLAYER ON THE OTHER HAND THOUGH IS ANOTHER STORY.
What’s wrong with Tiefling players then, and how can we knock some sense into them if they’re actually that bad?
Narcissists.
>What’s wrong with Tiefling players then
Trannies and gays.
>why though
Because they're rainbow colored and in league with the devil, it's not a deep reason.
>what can be done?
Ban dragonborn, tieflings and changelings. They'll exclude themselves.
The only tiefling player I know is a straight wife and mother. It's her first game though.
They're the kind of players who want to be freakshit but don't want to be treated like freakshit in the actual game.
Cute murderhobos
They should've transplanted the Planescape Tieflings into Forgotten Realms instead of changing them from freakshit into some 1th demonkin.
Also first for Tiefling Paladin.
Should have.
But the design notes. Which wotc even published back then, openly said they needed an edgy as frick race for teens and angsty people to grip onto and the writers for 4e hated how popular Drizzt was so it wasn't allowed to be Drow.
Which is another reminder that while the suits at Hasbro made the stupid fricking decision that every setting needed to be more homogenized than 3.5e already did, it was the creatives at wotc that decided they know what people "actually want" and made the most unappealing settings D&D has ever known.
Just what was so special about how Planescape did Tieflings compared to FR?
Could you tell us more about planescape? For example, what are some of the gods or elements associated with it?
Planescapes was set in the planes. Having Tieflings, being descended from planars, in the planes, makes sense. Having them on the prime material is fricking stupid and WotC massively fricked it up by having them be present at all.
I kind of hate how current tieflings are considered FR tieflings, when before 4th edition FR used planescape tieflings
Though I also don't know why 3e insisted on shoving the planetouched into the FR, when the FR has almost always been about humans solving problems created by other humans with minimal celestial/fiendish influence.
Planescape Tieflings can be many things. From something that is no different from anything else to OW THE EDGE, to something genuinely cool.
It's horrible what they did with Tieflings.
Better in every way.
For starters while they are descended from fiends and such, they never look like horned humanoids and their looks can vary drastically thanks to random mutations they get at birth.
They aren't edgy most of the time. Are not some edgy descendants from some comically evil empire...they were simply WEIRD. But in a good way and allowed for some nice gameplay styles.
The only girl in our group plays her tiefling fighter as a fierce fighter in battle, but in taverns will flirt with old gypsy ladies, and random minor noblemen (who she played public strip drinking games with until the paladin hauled her away.)
I have a fiend in my campaign who's pretending to be a tiefling (using a modified circlet of human perfection) and will 100% play the racism card when the party starts to suspect her of no-good.
>That casino scene in Rush Hour 2 where Carter responds to being screwed over by loudly accusing racism, pulling out the "I Have A Dream" reference at the top of his lungs standing on the table, then goes on a winning streak with new chips while everyone cheers him on, but it's a female Tiefling*
Best tiefling in the thread all tieflings should be stark white, all aasimar should be bronze
I don't think of tieflings because I don't play 5e. When I play DnDish games, it's typically Pathfinder, where tieflings aren't popular or weird, or it's ACKS, which doesn't have them. I find them to be very uninteresting compared to most other -ling races. My favorite demihuman race are the fetchlings, because they're cute shadow people who largely live in the penumbra and act as emissaries and spies, which is a strong niche for shadow people. Even though fetchlings may be partly defined by being demihuman, really they're more like dwarves and elves, because they actually carry on a proper civilization for themselves.
Tiefling lynching mob FTW
Grease is a level one spell and laughing is a free action. Let's see if that shitty town's bucket brigade wants to stick their necks out tonight.
anon none of those people look like tieflings...
Of course not! They're there to lynch one.
I don't see how they're not objectively an Evil-tilting race. Just like how you wouldn't trust various Warlocks or quarter-breed races.
>Human
>Dwarf
>Half Elf (Actually mutated Humans. An Elf did it)
>Beastkin (Halflings combined with Furshit, attracts the same type of players)
Those are the only playable races at my table
And yes, we are playing a half finished system that I make up as we go along.
There are also no stats, good luck.
That sounds awful. That's basically adult cops n robbers
Stay mad, anon. Stay mad about other people's games.
Besides Warlock and Bard, what classes do you prefer to play as when using a Tiefling PC/see in the campaigns you host?
What classes are available?
I just stick with Warlock and Bard personally.
Sorcerer? (
)
Rogue? (
)
We have a tiefling fighter in our party
I invented precisely one when a player complained the npc running an item shop was boring. So I said the guy was tired and struggling to compete with another item shop owner down the road who sold items at a 10% mark up, but got more business because he's a gay pink tiefling with a silly voice. They went to go see that shop instead and I decided his silly voice was a product of a malingering, slow acting cancer, and he raised his prices to try and offset the cost of experimental treatment. They went back to the boring guy. If they ever ask me what happened to the tiefling, I'll day he was exactly 10 gold short of an injection that would've prevented the tumor in his throat from swelling to the size of an apple and killing him
I think they are simultaneously over hated and over rated. A lot of grogs and old school players usually hate them for their often overuse and the players making them snowflake characters. While yes this can happen that usually is more a symptom of the player, and further this can usually be remedied by giving more defined design parameters. Their popularity is probably due to being core in 5e and admittedly being athletically cool. Personally I have done a few tiefling equivalents in my setting and they have worked fine and would recommend that to people who have issues with them, or just remove them.
I do think they are generally over rated by the community they are a fine character option and have some of the better defined lore (The bar isn't really that high) but often there are really like 2 characters made with tieflings. Evil aligned criminal/vagrant playing into their infernal heritage. Or good aligned hero who flips that heritage on it's head. 3 players in my current game are tiefling equivalents and all fall easily into that category.
AS wienerSLEEVES
As a tiefling player I find this offensive and completely accurate. Why do you think we act so edgy? We're brats. We're just going to keep acting out unless and until you grab us, hold us down, and put us in our place.
This isn't that difficult to figure out. Basically any problem with a tiefling or tiefling player can be solved by the judicious and aggressive application of wiener.
jerk off before posting. Also you will never be a tiefling, humie.
Even the boys?
ESPECIALLY THE BOYS
Trash race that exists in it's current form only for force israeli satanism into our hobbies. Fortunately everyone sees it for what is is now.
That would be devil pact warlocks.
As dm I try to use each race as a group to challenge the players when not fighting generic monster encounters
They used to be somewhat interesting, then every edgelord moron wanted to play one and now they're incredibly overdone and boring. They're the modern-day version of Drizzt clones from 15-25 years ago.
I've noticed people who say this always play the exact same character. Meanwhile, I have never even seen a tiefling played in any of my games. Mysterious.
You never noticed any such thing but you wish it was true.
The problem with tieflings is the edgelords stopped playing them and the pronoun people moved in to take their place.
Unless we're playing Planescapes they have no role. Planars are not player races frick your WotC bullshit die.
I don't like them. They're the dark elf wielding two scimitars of this generation.
Tieflings you say?
>What do you think of Tieflings /tg/?
The best /tg/ setting ever had tieflings basically all be Lawful Good clerics and paladins (with those classes being essentially closed to other races) where not outright nobility and even had a good explanation of why this was so. Mixing the foundational ideas of tiefs with the well-known stiff-necked tendencies of paladins isn't so much subversion of expectations as making it firmly clear that social expectations really shape how most people are.
And it messes with some players' heads something fierce, which is a laugh.
They don’t, though. This is Rian Johnson level brainlet cringe.
Shamaness
They don't exist
They don't exist in either of the campaigns I'm currently playing in.
Sounds like you're both bigots, then.
Hopefully, yes. You can always tell everything about a nonwhite by how they look and it’s good that all games reflect our reality.
Source?
They don't exist in my current campaign because we're playing Fallout using GURPS, but I will just come out and say it that I do indeed like weird girls with horns because I think they are cute.
I thought that one twitter post of the black guy complaining about how people in BG3 are racist to tieflings was funny.
Tieflings can be a very interesting race if the player actually uses the lore of them being a cursed race stigmatized by society.
You can be an adventurer who is desperate to prove tieflings can be good to the point of being manipulated, a paladin swearing an oath to a good deity to make up for the sins of his ancestors, a mercenary who has grown cynical and accepted being seen as a monster, an outlaw protecting a community of persecuted tieflings, a naive cityboy from a more accepting area who learns the hard way that some people are more bigotted, or even a straight up evil devil worshiper who continues the work of his ancestors. The possibilities are virtually endless.
The problem is that players just treat them humans with colorful skin and horns, and WotW doesn't have the balls for their settings to have racism.
I think it’s fine to use them or not, but pick one or the other. Don’t say you’re using them but then effectively ban them by deciding every Farmer Joe and his dog will try to kill a level 8 sorcerer on sight because he kind of looks a little like a Satan. People can be mean to or afraid of them without going to a ridiculous extreme like that, so it really just shows an embarrassing contempt for the concept itself that wastes everyone’s time by letting them choose to play a tiefling to begin with.
It’s true that you shouldn’t give people options that are a trap. On the other hand, people often pick them because they want that rep but don’t want the consequences. They want the edge and the woe is me and the attention, but only in the most cringe, self-fellating way possible with no internal logic or consequences. Kind of like how “people” get pit bulls or other dangerous animals and then act all fake-offended when people treat the dangerous animals correctly. When the fact that a pit bull has a bad (and deserved) reputation is THE only reason they wanted one to begin with. They didn’t pick them because they’re smart or good with people or trainable, they’re not. They have one defining trait: they try to be intimidating. That’s the only draw and nobody ever got a pit bull for any other reason.
Tieflings are the same way. They want to be evil looking Satans who are scary and threatening but only have that matter when it’s an advantage. If Tieflings are accepted and common and raysissim bad, then you’re also boring and nobody notices you or cares or is impressed. Tieflings are pale and stale.
Can we have some more thoughts? What about? Does anyone have any ways that we can find more info on this, aside from wikipedia?
Tieflings are for bisexuals that eat hot chip and lie
Replaced with Aasimar.
Okay, and how did you swing that?
What do you mean?
They're built to be concubines of male human martials, especially male human fighters
tieflings are oni in my setting. they also cover the role of orcs
I think that Oni are seriously underutilized, so this sounds based. If you have the time, I would love to get some more information on this.
sure, no problem. i have a few pages of lore dedicated to them, what specifically would you like to know?
Well, how do they evoke Oni, is it just in appearance, or is it a cultural thing too?
It’s mostly just in appearance, but what do you mean by a cultural thing? That sounds like a cool idea, can you tell us more?
I like how Pathfinder's Oni-spawn tieflings have Disguise Self as inborn trait, which allows you to play an otherwise brute as a clever manipulator.
*alter self*
In Pathfinder, Oni originated in Minkai in Tian Xia. Oni begin existence as kami, nature spirits bound by strict divine rules, the Laws of Golden Perfection. When a kami fails to live up to these laws, it is stripped of its powers and becomes a formless spirit. Most former kami simply fade away, but some are so overtaken with rage and despair that they will themselves into a physical form that mimic humanoids, becoming oni. Oni become obsessed with their new-found corporeality and revel in physical pleasures such as food, sex, and violence. Because of their origin, oni despise kami as cowards and weaklings.
Despite their fallen state, oni are still bound by the Laws of Golden Perfection. Oni believe that mortals do not sufficiently appreciate the pleasures of the physical world and so "punish" them for this failure. Oni "philosophy" is built on three pillars: maekaga (dominance), kaedakaga (punishing the undeserving), and tezukaga (hedonism); these are the guiding principles of all oni, with tezukaga taking precedence.
Hungerseed, also called oni-spawn, are tieflings descended from oni. Hungerseed are normally taller and bulkier than normal humans. Their flesh seems to bulge as if straining against their skin, particularly during times of heightened emotion. Endowed with brawny muscles and thick bones, hungerseed always seem poised to explode into some larger, more powerful form, and have a voracious appetite for sensory pleasures and carnal delights. Some oni-spawn also possess small tusks with which they delight in tearing into living flesh.
While tend to be lawful-aligned, like their forefathers, Oni-spawn are bullies by nature, and they exalt in using either violence or coercion to get what they want. If thwarted, they bide their time before enacting bloody revenge. Oni-spawn are driven, like their oni sires, by a constant and unending hunger for earthly pleasures of every sort.
personally i love them
>Doric was a Tiefling the whole time
She might be the least Tiefling-like Tiefling that I've ever seen.
She ended up fricking the black guy, so she seems tiefling-like to me. Every tiefling I've ever seen played as been a sexual degenerate, after all.
The least evident Tiefling I have ever seen is Annah-of-the-shadows, only the tail is evident at first glance, and she's one of the most iconic Tieflings ever.
I think they're fine, but whenever I play one my DM has a well-to-do woman at the fancy place we get the quest from hit on me with something like "I've never had a tiefling before."
Thoughts?
None. Head empty.
Do you like your Tieflings with tails and/or wings, or do you think that they work better without them?
Without. Tails obstruct tiefling ass and that is just unacceptable.
What about wings then?
>Wings
Wings should be a temporary effect or at least retractable. Only fey'ri tieflings should have permanent wings.
Could you tell us more? For example, what kinds of gods would be associated with tiefling wings?
>gods
No gods, no deities or at least no category that would qualify. In-game religions don't need deity mechanics to function.
