chapter 2 basically rebuilt the game (Toby said somewhere actual development took about 18 months from start to finish). I imagine during that time too he plotted out story beats and various other things so that now development is just focused on finalizing designs, implementing, refining the story, and playtesting. I think it's reasonable to expect 3-5 to come out by end of 2023.

Chapter 2 was probably in development hell for those 3 years.
Now that he has a team and (probably) functioning hands, with the entire game written out and a nice groundwork to build the next chapters on (like a functional way of handling cutscenes), I imagine things will go a lot smoother.
Deltarune is 100% fulled by Toby's autism, so expect the game to finish releasing in 4 years (picrel).
Deltarune is the only thing keeping me from kmsing myself. Toby, please just release it so I can play it and then enjoy the sweet embrace of Death.

Toby has talked in detail about how the game (Chapter 2 specifically, Chapter 1 was handled more or less like Undertale which made him realize he couldn't do it on his own) is being developed, what his role is and some other key developers, and how his disability has affected development.

The story has (basically) been written already, all the significant events and characters are already known, the game isn't being made up as they go along. The process is in realizing Toby's vision and working it into a playable game, with stuff like programming, cutscene direction, fight design, actually making serviceable art and composing the music.
The next release will be Chapters 3-5 altogether, so it can be expected that even if the team expanding, being more experienced and being able to reuse/adapt assets cuts down on development time (say from Chapter 2's effective ~18 months to ~12 months per chapter) we can still expect that it will take a while. Toby will probably put out another development update statement like this in September as he has the last two years.

The part where she and kris are alone is by far the best in the game and actually somewhat develops her as a character, then all of that is instantly thrown away as soon as susie is on screen at the same time as her
Noelle's obsession with Susie has potential to be an actual interesting character/plot point, provided that Toby isn't blinded by his lesbian fetish. Noelle's life is pretty damn shitty (cool dad is on death's door, cool older sister is missing, her mother is a workaholic absentee ice queen) and her fantasies with Susie are basically escapism. Noelle is also obsessed with a version of Susie that turns out is completely made up and only exists within her own head - since now we know that Susie is actually a goofy dork with awful people skills and an image problem, and not actually the 'god please step on me dragon bully mommy' person that Noelle splooshes her panties over.
There's loads of potential there for everything to go spectacularly off the rails for Noelle, but we're just going to have to hope that Toby isn't just going to turn off his brain because 'hurr lesbians' again.
I'm hopeful that Toby is a good enough writer to know how his own characters should behave since Deltarune is a "more serious" work and he mentions Undertale's characters were intentionally flanderized pre-production for fandom bait and to make stronger character presences. Chapter 2 gives me the vibe that Noelle is trying to "justify" her pre-conception of, attraction to, and obsession with Susie by remaining attracted to her long after it's completely apparent that Susie is not at all the person she thought she was and everybody thinks of her as. I don't think Noelle is seeing Susie The Person, yet, I think she's still seeing Susie The Ideal and interpreting moments together as romance when it's Susie doing nothing but trying to cheer her up.
Granted the Weird Route explicitly defines those moments as romantic, but the whole theme of the Weird Route is that you're alienating Kris away from LITERALLY EVERYTHING IN HIS LIFE in an attempt to exert your own influence of the game, and also explicitly giving Noelle the backbone to make any kind of move instead of blush-uguu'ing over the thought of it. Also Berdly has to be fricking dead to even get a long enough moment that it can go that way. Imagine being wingman-cucked by your father in the normal route. Imagine being Noelle.

Not really, most of it is him reusing ideas and songs that he made a while back that were kinda hidden to begin with- yet they're all inspired by yume nikki. That doesn't confirm or deny anything obviously, but I think it's interesting to keep that in mind.

there's also a couple specific things. One is that she's the one that forced Asgore to step down many years ago from Police Chief, and there's also lines about her being really hard on Noelle. Rudy mentions that him present at home balanced the family dynamic but with him stuck in the hospital he's worried Noelle is taking the brunt of whatever her mom is demanding and he can't help her.
I have a theory I unreasonably believe in that Dess is the Knight, her disappearing/'dying' is what forced Asgore to step down, and her drive to create dark fountains comes from a desire to not only escape her mother, but have Noelle escape as well, which seems to be in line with the game's themes of escapism, family, and whatnot

My brain is still fueled on Umineko thinking so I'm trying to approach the identity of the Knight from a quasi-classical mystery novel standpoint. Dess (as a concept at least) is introduced as early as Chapter 1 (Knox's First), based on tertiary information it's relatively easy to deduce Holiday home life, giving Dess a possible motive to opening dark fountains. She could easily have slipped into the school during the night to open the fountain in the closet, and again in the Librarby, and her motive could be that she wanted to create a perfect world for Noelle to escape to.
It's practically fanfiction at this point with what we know in the story, but I imagine that since Kris took an interest in the occult (and wanted/wants to desperately fit in with monster family/community), and the four of them, Dess, Asriel, Kris and Noelle, were all friends at one point, they opened a dark fountain when they were kids by accident, Dess disappeared, only Kris remembered, and Asgore took the fall to avoid Kris being ostracized by the community, even though it would be an accident, or just to take the blame anyways even if he didn't know Kris really did it.

There's two versions of that dialogue.

I think your suggestion happens just a bit too soon in the story (I do think either Toriel or Asgore will bite the big one in the Weird Route ), but I think the weird route rapidly breaking apart Hometown would still be really interesting to see. I wonder if we'll see any changes to Chapter 2's upon further releases, given that the only noticeable overworld change apart from the extra Noelle scene(s) is the bead in the hospital being broken. An extra line about Berdly not showing up somewhere, or a further extra line from King (he says the same thing in when you forget to recruit everyone and in Weird Route)

nta but gaster's theme is a simple arpeggio (that eventually gets lower) that you can hear in many songs, video games or not, because of the fact that it sounds nice and is pretty simple to do. toby could've very well made gaster's theme an arpeggio simply to have the feeling of him being everywhere in the ost without having to put specific melodies in and making sure they fit.
(second video is ironic, but helps showcase some other vidya songs in which it is used)
I do believe the "Gaster's theme is simple so it can be everywhere" is something toby did on purpose, considering he was shattered across time and space. Noelle explains that she likes things that are "scary" but safe, she's intimidated by Susie but also thinks that she's not half as mean as she looks and pretends to be. If Susie did turn out to be a bad person who would seriously mistreat her, Noelle would be heartbroken.
That dialogue and the few similar cases are really standard horny teenager stuff, she's just letting a fantasy get away from her, it's not that deep.

God I'm actually way more hype about Deltarune than basically any other game right now. And it's all thanks to chapter 2.
I love the normal route and want to see more of these dorks going on adventures.
And I also want to see what fricked up "weird route" we'll get with chapter 3. The discovery of that route in chapter 2 was some of the best Ganker threads I've seen from this place in years.
The popular theory I think is that we'll have Toriel as the temp party member like with Noelle, and Undyne will also be there since Toriel called the cops about Kris slashing her tires. And we'll have Toriel kill enemies to protect us, which will eventually lead to her incinerating Undyne.
I genuinely don't know if I want to see (You) corrupting various characters or if I want all of the weird routes to be about Noelle actually. The idea that we're molding her into the perfect vessel for us, one that won't fight back like Kris, is such a fascinating direction the story might go.

Honestly I liked part 1 because it was straightforward and didn't have some stupid metagamy genocide/pacifist route nonsense. I liked Noel until people started posting weird route stuff and showing what an easily manipulated moron she is.

I hated Noelle until the genocide stuff. Noelle is an okay character who becomes horrible when she's around Susie, and the weird route got rid of most of the Susie stuff while fleshing her out in a different way.

there's far too much shit, including future items like the pure sword or whatever it was called only available through snowgrave iirc, it's an absolute mess. i think the game isn't designed to be played 3 ways at the same time otherwise you just get completely lost, but toby didn't want players to have to overwrite their save 500 times like in undertale

considering how ice-e appears everywhere in deltarune yet only appears once ONLY IF you decide to check sans' crossword in undertale, i think it's pretty obvious that he's very important especially for sans and papyrus' characters
He and Everyman are the only Light World characters that show up in the Dark World. Everyman is interesting, he was an Amalgamate attack in Undertale and only ever appeared in the shmup box, but shows up in Deltarune in Jevil's fight (randomly replaces a carousel attack head), a Chapter 2 ad and in Alphys's alley as graffiti. Ice-E also appears as graffiti with Everyman.
Ice-e does appear in a lot of other places but this caught my eye because is the cabinet is where kris throws the soul in Ch 2
The Everyman appearance I find interesting is the drawing in the closet that looks like him. While that's likely the reason for Jevil being able to attack with him, what I want to know is why he's there in the first place? Who drew him?
Being an Amalgamate monster in Undertale too, also implies something important: that Everyman is dead.

you can't kill at all without using some special things. but being aggressive and forcing every enemy to flee does give a different dialogue at some points compared to sparing every enemy you see, even in ch.1.
