I genuinely played about 200 hours of zombies on 4, I loved it so much. After Workd at War released all you could find on 4 was a shitty knockoff of that PvE zombie mode. The original zombie mod completely died overnight, it was gutting
I was a diehard PC FPS player who mocked COD, but I tried 4 on PC years after it came out, and I had a surprising amount of fun in the multiplayer. Basically faster-paced more casual Counter-Strike, nothing mindblowing but a solid fun time. And all the servers I joined on PC were chill. Can't believe I'm talking like COD4 was in "the good old days" but it squeaked in at the tail end there.
I hope Gulf War goes back to COD sometimes actually being about a fricking war with big ass armies, like CODs 1-3, WaW, United Offensive, Finest Hour, Big Red One, etc. Which was COD's whole claim to fame when most WW2 shooters were stuff like Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor, one superhuman dude just gunning down hordes of Nazis singlehandedly. Even if COD4 and MW2 liberally cribbed from contemporary war media like Black Hawk Down, it was still about a regular conflict and not just spec ops jackoff time.
It probably comes from having Modern Warfare back to back in consecutive years but it's hard not to notice how the entire story is just 2-4 dudes shooting like 20 people every chapter instead of big ass battles. Hell, the final level of both games are basically police SWAT team actions taking place in the London underground and a Chicago skyscraper.
Hell it's fricking weirder when Black Ops Cold War, the subfranchise about deniable CIA operations' final level is a big bombastic invasion of a Russia with aircraft carriers, jets, a huge fleet of jeeps with you blasting a grenade launcher as the driver floors it and ending with you wielding a minigun to tear through a bunch of Russians to save the world from nuclear annihilation. Why is Black Ops the COD series doing the whole war bit?
1 - 4 are the best
3 is very comfy indeed
4 rocked the boat, saved the franchise but also spelled its doom to pure slop. Before 4 it was already considered slop, the time was critical and bored of "grey ww2 shooters" like CoD and Medal of Honor. 4 was the one to change it, and yet after 4 is when it became sloppiest of all. By black ops the crowd was totally different. 4 multiplayer was very fun.
CoD 1 was great, 2 good can't really remember, 3 was the most memorable for me, and 4 was very cool.
Blops was good, but MW3 was forced to hold back on the military shit since the DOD told activision to stop giving away intel on military tech and combat strategies, so blops 2 and ghosts had to go to extravegant over the top scifi shit. MW3 kinda was the last straw for how activision approached old CoD since they fired alot of infinityward employees and hired sledgehammer to start making games which gave some more dev time for the other two dev teams.

waw was never good. unscoped bolt actions had garbage damage, semi automatics were zero-recoil clickspam guns, machine guns dominated and shotguns were still just the crappy gun you might use when bored of the rest. perks was rehashed cod4 with some new filler like "shades" lazily thrown in. killstreaks were made more annoying because artillery lasts too long and hits too wide an area, and dogs will attack you indoors so you have to corner camp until they are gone. mines in the form of bouncing betties were made more brainless to use with a 360 degree bomb radius on top of being less visible than the claymore. overall a bad game.

CoD2 was designed around controllers, televisions and consoles. It's a console game.
I beat COD1 on PC on Veteran with no quicksaves, checkpoints only. COD2 is better and regenerating health was a sensible choice for the type of scenarios COD was trying to create (shouldn't be in every game though). Not sure what controllers have to do with it either. I don't remember the aiming challenges being harder in COD1 or anything that made me think "wow they really expected players to be good with a mouse". In fact I would say that for the games 1 through WaW, COD4 is the one that has the most quick-reaction moments.

People back in the day said that it had a fun MP, and it could be so, but the SP campaign was the worst mainline campaign I’ve played in the series.

I wish I had a 360 too. I had my PC and got a PS3 because I needed my Sony exclusives. I bought the Gran Turismo 5 bundle and it was shit. The rest of the exclusives kind of came in drips and drabs. I knew nobody who gamed on PS3. The console was just shit in the end.
Ironically now my friends have all retired from games (let's face it they're all shit now, they're not made for 35 year olds) I have an Xbox.
Cod4 was terrible for the franchise. M16 obliterated the entire game and the maps were just who could camp the best. Dedicated server = you rent/buy/setup a server to host the game server, rather than hosting it from your own computer while playing.
No dedicated server = you aren't able to rent/buy/setup a server to host the game server, because the developers don't allow you to do so. Usually because they want you to purely play through their matchmaking.

CoD4 to BO2 was the golden age, no real "best game," genuinely a matter of taste and preference >BO1 for schizo ass story and jankkino MP >BO2 for build variety and story choices >WaW for simple yet rough and gritty gameplay >MWs for realism and keeping a baseline quality for MP
The latter ultimately hurt CoD in the end, when Activision and IW tried to push towards hyperrealism in Ghosts and fricked it all up, then Sledgehammer set the precedent of having MTX supporting the MP in COD AW. I finally gave up on the series after my buddies pushed me to waste $70 on nuMW2 and I saw more of the same shit I hated, like MTX and artificially "slow and tactical" gameplay. I hear "OMG MW3 is so good guise!!11" but it's too little too late. Unless they port BO2 to next-gen (cuz I don't trust them to edit the game at all), I ain't touching CoD with a ten foot pole

waw was never good. unscoped bolt actions had garbage damage, semi automatics were zero-recoil clickspam guns, machine guns dominated and shotguns were still just the crappy gun you might use when bored of the rest. perks was rehashed cod4 with some new filler like "shades" lazily thrown in. killstreaks were made more annoying because artillery lasts too long and hits too wide an area, and dogs will attack you indoors so you have to corner camp until they are gone. mines in the form of bouncing betties were made more brainless to use with a 360 degree bomb radius on top of being less visible than the claymore. overall a bad game.

Pretty great until MW2. MW1 had its flaws and MW2 took only those and ran with it. Blops and WaW were still fun, but MW2/BO2 were my last games

I beat COD1 on PC on Veteran with no quicksaves, checkpoints only. COD2 is better and regenerating health was a sensible choice for the type of scenarios COD was trying to create (shouldn't be in every game though). Not sure what controllers have to do with it either. I don't remember the aiming challenges being harder in COD1 or anything that made me think "wow they really expected players to be good with a mouse". In fact I would say that for the games 1 through WaW, COD4 is the one that has the most quick-reaction moments.

People back in the day said that it had a fun MP, and it could be so, but the SP campaign was the worst mainline campaign I’ve played in the series.

Cod4 was terrible for the franchise. M16 obliterated the entire game and the maps were just who could camp the best. I remember doing Headquarters matches camping with the RPD and deep impact getting my 5 kills, calling in a airstrike, then killing myself with a grenade so I could just spam another airstirke to get 150+ kill games. I hear "OMG MW3 is so good guise!!11" but it's too little too late. Unless they port BO2 to next-gen (cuz I don't trust them to edit the game at all), I ain't touching CoD with a ten foot pole
